Yes Subaru was much more experienced at running a company and knew how to make it profitable. the difference is being an automotive parts supplier or automotive-related business is much different than being an automotive manufacturer.

    • dl87z28
      dl87z28 2 days ago

@Mr. H SOA is a success because of Subaru and Fuji Heavy Industries, not Malcolm Bricklin. Bricklin started the company and gave them a way into the country and then failed the same as he failed in every business venture he undertook. Making money on the front end isn't success when you fail in the back end. Yes Bricklin made some money in most of his ventures, but they all failed miserably. As far as for me, I've had one automotive related business venture that was a complete success. 15 years, and I still own it, I still run it, and I still work it every day. So my record is already far better than Malcolm Bricklin.

    • Mr. H

To be honest...That car was amazing. Unless you see one in person it's so unique and unlike any other vehicle. Plus It had a 351 cleveland, it's everything you hoped the Delorean. In my opinion. Also i kinda believe he really wanted the vehicle to succeed but just got in over his head.

And to be honest what was the issue that got him over his head? That infamous American tendency to be so focused on your success, you are willing to do anything to get there. Including screwing over people and rushing way too fast to do everything. Spending all this investment money on his lifestyle while his project/dream starves for cash. The Japanese learned this no doubt with there car, after Bricklin spent so much on his pleasurable offices instead of making sure the car was up to snuff to compete. Same with the paint company before then, Stuck with a debt-ridden Hardware chain because Bricklin ran away with the investment funds. Same issues which plague the American economy, banking, and politics today. To the point of jeopardizing the planet's economy and finances today.

    • Mr. H

There was no intentional fraud. And 45 years later the survival rate of the cars is very high compared to other cars. I drive my Bricklin cross country it's never left me stranded. I don't even bring tools with me. Don't forget, the cool factor with these cars.

@The Fett Fan Is Rolls Royce a German or whatever country the company owns it is from...no its a English car anyway your rant should have been how come Ireland or the UK or wherever the Delolorean was built didn't learn from Canada's mistake with the Bricklin and not waste money on that junky Delorean monstrocity...but no, you went right after the US but to each his own or whatever floats your boat as they say...The country that wasted all that money was the dummies.

    • The Fett Fan
      The Fett Fan Day ago

@Arthur Humphreys No, It's not. All Delorean stock were all shipped to the American continent after manufacturing and sold there. They were never sold anywhere in mainland Europe, Britain or Ireland. Any European who wanted one purchased it in the USA and imported it back. Not an American car!!!! How is it not? Check your facts first before it's the way it is.

    • Arthur Humphreys

Here we go, another con man just like DeLorean. Typical narcissistic sociopaths. Screwing people over for a buck . There have been so many people that had fallen prey to these types of con man scum POS's ; some had even subsequently committed suicide because they could never recover after their lives had been ruined by them; I think the punishment for these turds should be much more severe than what it is. Also, the car looked like a DeLorean with a nose extension. I wouldn't have a Bricklin or a DeLorean based solely on the POS's they represent.

A beautiful-looking car; pity the whole thing turned out to be very ... DeLorean. If someone gave me ten million to build a new car, I bet I could do it. Rule number one: don't siphon off a lot of that money for yourself. Second, get rid of the damn gull-wing doors. Even Mercedes couldn't make 'em work satisfactorily. I'd keep the looks of the body, shitcan everything else, and start from scratch -- with a real frame, quality body and interior materials, a known good engine, etc.

I always thought the Bricklin was an ugly car. This was a terrible documentary. Bricklin was selling the shit out of that car getting it on TV shows like Chico and The Man (a very popular show at the time, and Let's Make a Deal. This "documentary" makes it sound like he was responsible for manufacturing and design. He wasn't. Every investment is a gamble and only a journalist could possibly be so inexperienced in life as not to know that. Hail to the people of New Brunswick and Bricklin for trying. This isn't a documentary it is a political statement dressed up as a documentary. And yes every business needs to keep the money flowing and most do so on borrowed money. duh...grow the fuck up

@The Trump News Network If he has to sit on his managers all the time, then he's hired the wrong people, or he's not managing them properly. It's as simple as that, dude. There's a reason the CEO gets the big paycheque; they're ultimately responsible for what happens in the company, the good and the bad. If pitching the product is a full-time job, then you delegate. Older than you. Only young people ask that question, to give themselves a sense of seniority.

    • The Trump News Network

@soupisgoodfood You've never run a business have you? While they were supposed to be building the cars he was out pitching the product. As with all companies there were several layers of management and since the town was on the brink without Bricklin, he shouldn't have had to sit on them like a mother hen. He put his own talents to the best use for the company. How old are you anyway?

So Hitler decided to kill all the Jews because he spoke German? People who speak German are opposed to the 2nd Amendment? If you support gun rights, you probably speak German? All Germans are racist? That is some profound mental gymnastics. We don't have a brutal dictator right now because if one ever rose to power, he'd get his/her ass shot dead. Period. End of story. We don't have a brutal dictator because no one has ever been able to disarm us....thanks to the Founding Fathers and the 2nd Amendment. End of story.

@Jay Bee Interesting you should say that. What became the United States almost opted to choose German as the national language.English won by a majority of 1 vote. Imagine the situation if German had been chosen. What would have happened during both World Wars in the 20th Century? The world would be a very different place indeed. The 'States might have become 100% white, for a start. Canada and Europe would likely have become parts of 'Großer Deutschland', and even Russia would have been very different, maybe even a long-standing ally of Germany. So it's not guns that we have to thank. Maybe languages instead.

LOOK UP THE DELOREAN DOCUMENTRY 1977 HERE ON YOU TUBE. THE FIRST PROTOTYPE IS GOING DOWN THE L. A. FREEWAY IN 1976 PASSING A STINGRAY CORVETTE. A LOT OF PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THIS. IM FROM THAT ERA AND KNOW A LOT ABOUT DELOREAN AND GERALD WEIGERT OF VECTOR MOTORCARS.

@pasoundman It looks like YOU are the one whom needs to Pay more attention. The idea that the government would make the "special 10-42 deal" to entice the people to go to work and do their fucking jobs is epicly retarded, and undoubtedly liberal. You need to stop hiding behind the feel-good bullshit that the liberals are selling and encourage people to take responsibility for themselves instead of voting for a parental imaged government to take care of everyone, because if you knew anything at all about human nature, you'd then know that they don't care about people, they care about power. Or just continue to support the politicians whom offer NO REAL IDEAS, other than "give us more control & tax dollars and we'll take care of everything for you". And don't forget to call everyone that disagrees with these stupid ideals "racists & biggots" because that will make you feel like "the good guy" while offering absolutely NOTHING in the way of real solutions. So in other words... ....Just keep doing what liberal politics have ALWAYS done.

Their first mistake was trusting a guy who wears sunglasses at an indoor press conference. Glaring early warning signs aside, even if that car had been totally successful from an engineering and manufacturing standpoint, it was at best a niche vehicle, completely impractical for the vast majority of potential customers. After the initial excitement has worn off, where do you go from there to grow the business, foster repeat business (customer loyalty), and increase your customer base? As so many other automotive start-ups have found over the years, once you exhaust the initial energy behind the project and the people who bought into the hype and had to have The Next New Thing have made their purchase, then what? You can't survive on building just a quirky two-seater niche car. Would there have been a Bricklin sedan, station wagon/SUV, entry level hatchback, mini van, or pickup truck? Of course not. Even under the best of circumstances it was a vanity project that was doomed to failure. As the old joke goes, how do you make a small fortune in the auto industry? Start with a large fortune.

    • RWBHere
      RWBHere 20 days ago

Morgan Motors have survived on building quirky two-seater niche cars, which have been hand-crafted since the 1930's, and customers can wait for many months before receiving their new vehicle. Their order books are also still healthier than those of some much bigger manufacturers.

@pasoundman The TSR2 was most British people's favourite new jet aircraft. The disappointment upon hearing about it being scrapped at the prototype stage was immense. It turned out to become Britain's last fully home-built fighter / interceptor. One intact prototype still exists in a museum.

    • pasoundman
      pasoundman Month ago

The Arrow was entirely different. It would have challenged US fighter jets' superiority so was cancelled for poltical reasons as was the quite similar British TSR2. Both were highly advanced and would have been succesful if not cancelled.

In Spring '75 I graduated from college in Washington, DC, and was looking for a cheap way home to Seattle. At that time dealerships would hire college students to drive cars to new owners outside the dealership's region. I found a help wanted ad on campus for someone to drive a car to Seattle. They paid only $50, and I was responsible for buying gas, but it was still cheaper than plane fare. When I got to the dealership, I was given the keys to a white Bricklin, which I'd never heard of. I drove it off the dealer's lot and the next day started a five day trek across the midwest and north through Colorado and Wyoming. I had no money for motels, so slept on roadsides and bathed in creeks. The car drew a crowd everywhere I stopped, especially when I opened the gull-wing doors. But the supreme moment of ecstasy behind the wheel came when I drove through Yellowstone Nat'l Park the day after they'd opened the main north-south roads for the summer season. The park was absolutely empty. The Bricklin had a Ford 351ci engine, and it BOOGIED! Soon after entering the park a late-model Chevy Malibu joined me on a game of high-speed follow the leader until we descended into Montana and parted ways. That was 45 years ago, and to this day stands as the best road trip I've ever driven. The car performed flawlessly for me.

The power of mindless pop culture mentality. If instead of a Delorean they had used a Bricklin in Back to the Future, perception of them would be completely reversed. Funny thing is, the time machine in BTTF was originally going to be a refrigerator, but they were afraid of lawsuits if kids shut themselves in refrigerators trying to imitate the movie.
