So, are we all just gonna gloss over the fact that Bill Murray walked out in royal garb to a concert version of Henry the 8th and had a squire bring him a sandwich?

Peter was a fantastic character. LOVED in Britain of course - as was his great mate (and drinking buddy) Richard Harris. Always thought when Harris died O'Toole should have been made Dumbledore not the one who got it

"to help him realise that he *is* unique. I end the program by saying you've made this day a special day by just your being you. There's no person in the whole world like you and I like you just the way you are." Mister Rogers never reached my country but...I needed that. I didn't need it today, or the day before. I still need it. I'm 18, I'm a kid. I don't think anyone other than a true comrade truly loves me.

This could not have been edited more beautifully!! So well done, this mini documentry encapsulates the right and the wrong characteristics to have in a host... And it's so easy to see, that the best hosts, we will ever see on TV, as hosts and as dignified, honest, humble people, are Johnny Carson, David Letterman and of course, my favourite, Conan (Coco) O' Brien...

Ugh Anderson Cooper’s laugh at “it was at studio 54...” I don’t think I’m the only one to say that that man has charm that goes beyond words. Also: if you love Martin Short, “Clifford” is one of the most underrated films of a generation. When he plays his flute while he’s waiting in that office... 😂

we don’t need a fake super hero.... or merely another famous actor to explain that one. if an audience surrogate is seen or told to be killed, there has to be a large reason for his death. no one can beat dying to “save” everyone we have ever loved, love or could have loved from going to hell, and as well, “rising from the dead” and then going to “heaven”. to beat that you have to incorporate it into your own story and even then it won’t surpass the original. next!

MEL BROOKS IS A TRUE, REPEAT TRUE AMERICAN HERO AND THE EXACT SAME GOES FOR CARL REINER. And Mel's truest love for Ann Bancroft & Gene Wilder is beyond heartbreaking. And I cannot imagine how incredible it must've been to be married to the GODDESS ANNE BANCROFT. I'll ALWAYS ADORE HER. Forever blessings on them both and Gene Wilders' fabulous memory, too.

Back when monologues weren't about trump and actually were about regular stuff happening in the entertainment industry

    • Stephen Foster
      Stephen Foster Day ago

@Best of Humans yeah sure good point, but it seems like hosts nowadays rely on trump making dumb ass decisions (which is almost constant) instead of creating their own jokes. Yeah sure every once in a while someone comes up with an original, witty joke about trump, but then only to use that same joke over and over and over again. It gets old.

    • Best of Humans
      Best of Humans Day ago

Umm monologues have always been political. Check out jay Leno’s never ending Bill Clinton jokes. Maybe you just don’t like current monologues because you disagree with their politics. But to say they’ve never been political is flatly untrue.

  • Agnus Dei

Many years ago, I never understood why anyone would buy a movie when you could just rent it. After watching Planes, Trains and Automobiles for the fifth time, I bought it. I'm old, old enough to remember when JFK was assassinated but I don't remember where I was when I heard that terrible news; nor do I remember where I was when I heard about the assassination of Bobby Kennedy; nor do I remember where I was when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. But I remember exactly where I was when I heard of the death of Mr. John Candy. John Candy was the type of guy that you would love to have as a neighbour. The day that John Candy died, the world became a lot less comical.

That's the fourth story I have heard about actors and musicians trying to buy pubs in Ireland when they are pissed. Know one lady who was with her mother after a funeral in a hotel and the bar manager refused to serve them after closing so she went and found the owner, bought the hotel and went back in and fired the barman. Love Ireland for being so small. Everyone has a great story.
