MD-11 is the most dangerous and worst designed plane currently in the skies. 21:58 BOUNCE! 22:26 BOUNCE! 23:27 BOUNCE! 25:45 Early flair and looong floating. And despite that still BOUNCE.

    • Maloy7800

@O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting No, bouncing a landing is not an indicator of how good a plane is. Bouncing EVERY landing, however, is. And MD-11 is a well-proven death trap.

    • O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting
O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting 7 hours ago

lol.... cargo pilots don't necessarily care how smooth their landings are sometimes since there aren't passengers on board. The MD-11F is a very well-built airplane and can certainly handle it. Bouncing a landing is not a good indicator of how good a plane or pilot is. Try landing an airplane for yourself sometime and you'll find out!

I wonder why British and Virgin airliners make such heavy, even rough landings over most any other flights, Lot's of dust when they land, where are airlines like, United are just beautiful..

    • O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting
O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting 7 hours ago

Not sure... I have watched thousands of landings from lots of different airplanes and airlines but I don't really notice any airline having rougher landings than others. I do know the Boeing 757-300W, 767-400 and 737-900ER sometimes have harder landings due to how long those airplanes are... they don't flare very much in the landing because of it. Thanks for watching!

I’ve had the fortune of traveling to many different places on all types of planes, but the best flight I’ve ever been on was an MD-80 from ORD-SEA. An empty flight on a cold and foggy night. Smoothest takeoff I’ve ever experienced and a nice, relaxing 3 hours the entire way. I also flew on the MD-80 for my first international flight from STL-YVR. Great times.

The MD-80 is much older than me but it has become one of my most favorite planes, all the way from its section 41 which reminds me of the space shuttle to the distinct whine they make on take off. You know when an MD-80 is flying overhead because it makes a low rumble that no other plane can make.

I am still sad about the retirement of the 727 and DC-10 and now even the Super 80 is gone!! I remember well when the MD80 was a new arrival and they seemed so quiet compared to other planes in service at the time. Many times on the ramp at DFW airport I stood near a 727 doing a powerback off the gate and loved watching it, hearing it, and feeling it every time. Even with hearing protection it was VERY LOUD!! I will always miss the airliners from the 60's, 70's and early 80's.

Thank-you Jay for taking the time to cover another milestone in our civil aviation history. You will have to forgive me for merely skipping through the speech. All too often speeches from company executives turn out to be nothing more than a non-filling-that-still-leaves-me-hungry “word salad”. Nevertheless, I sincerely offer my condolences to those who are “Mad Dog” fans. For we all have laments tied to certain aircraft that somehow tagged us with memorable events whenever they cease service. Despite whomever inherited the design and re-designated the model name, to me they all remain variants of the original DC-9. However, it is ironic that Boeing ultimately took over the development of an aircraft from the Douglas Aircraft Corporation, which was once Boeing’s fierce rival. As far as this particular aircraft, N984TW, according to airfleets.net it entered service with TWA in December 1999 and was the last MD-80 built. American Airlines acquired the aircraft after it purchased the bankrupt TWA (Hand over the heart, and TWA used to operate out of "H" concourse), which gives it close to 20 years of useful work. Your entire video (minus the speech) did rekindle some memories for me. My first flight on a jet aircraft was on an American Airlines CV-990, which left from gate K4. However, dad did snap a black and white of my little brother and me in front of a window that had a 707 parked at gate K5 in the background. As far as flights on a DC-9 or whatever is the current designation, I have flown both in coach and first class. The flights themselves were rather uneventful. The only difference was that the first class seats were more comfortable, and it was nice to be nursing a couple of Bloody Marys (early morning flights) before the aircraft pushed back from the gate. About the only surprising thing to me about this final flight, that is different from other last flight videos is that there are no signatures on the aircraft. Usually, anyone who had been associated with a certain aircraft model affixed their signature to the skin somewhere with a magic marker. Other than that, the only other thing I noticed was the “MD80” stenciled next to the yellow mark to denote an aircraft’s stopping point at a gate. I guess American will get around to painting over “MD80” with another aircraft type one of these days. Maybe we will get lucky and see “SST” (AKA: Boeing 2707) - HA!

Thanks for including the information about the aircraft andd some personal history as well. I always enjoy hearing that personal touch and what content in my video means to you. You will be happy to know that some of the ground crew signed the aircraft near the bottom of the radome. Even in 4K this is probably somewhat hard to make out. Also, many passengers, employees and even yours truly went onboard the aircraftand were sure to leave our best wishes, gratitude, notes, etc. on the interior with magic marker. I'm sorry I didn't get video of this because we were all busy writing instead of filming but rest assured, it did happen! Thanks for watching, Guerry! I don't blame you for skipping through the speech :D Long live the DC-9 and it's many variants.

Wonderful video! Of course, I’m old enough to have flown on DC-8s, DC-10s, L-1011s. I’ll miss the old 80/DC-9, because it was so comfortable, and if you were seated upfront, quiet as a church. Last flew her on a route from DFW to ORD over a year ago, the plane has a long service history but the modern comforts of flying a 737 or A320 with better fuel burn finally pushed her out the door. If you want a loud uncomfortable flight Delta is still running the old Mad Dog, I'm surprised the pushed the MD out the door, AA is not having a great time with cancellations amid their struggle with their mechanics. My last nerve with AA was a delayed flight to MCO, and then a cancelled flight back to ORD.

KLM usually brings a 747 or 777-200. For a very long time it was always the 747. I have seen an occasional 777-300W or 789 but those are not common here. This was indeed over a few days as ICE and AFR each send a daily pax flight. In this video I barely covered the variety here as there are quite a few you don’t see... Jay, I have a question, I was picking someone up this past week at LAX at 1AM (Labor Day Weekend), and was plane spotting off Imperial HWY (you must know the area I am referring to?) next to 25L. I seen something I have NEVER seen in my life. Planes were departing on 25L, and actually LANDING on 6R and 6L AT THE SAME EXACT TIME! 25L departures were turning "HARD LEFT" as soon as they passed the Threshold of 7R. I have proof and recorded this on the fly (if anyone disbelieves me). One plane landing DID NOT EVEN HAVE HIS LANDING LIGHTS ON! Only beacon and Clearance lights on wingtips. Have you ever seen this before. I am going to post this on my channel soon (most likely on Labor day), although the quality really sucks. I was not intending to do spotting and doing video that early morning, BUT I do have a couple video's to prove what I have seen. Take it ez, Tom in NV

    • Tom Taylor
      Tom Taylor 13 days ago

@O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting I did post the video on my channel, BUT PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, the quality is HORRIBLE as I was not intending to video or even put up for anyone to see. It was just spur of the moment, here is my link for one video, I have two videos at LAX. tvclip.biz/video/YVelF6J8YrU/video.html Thanks for your time and your post to answer, I knew it was something like 1000' separation but not sure. I still have never seen this, but then again I rarely get to go to any airports anymore. Thanks, Tom in NV

    • O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting
O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting 13 days ago

Thanks for the note, Tom! LAX ATC, as well as some other larger airports around the country, have approval to allow landings and departures to the same directional area after dark due to very restrictive noise constraints that take place at that time of night. This operation with 25L and 6R-L is safe so long as strict minimum lateral separation is maintained between inbound and outbound traffic. The pilots and controllers watch this closely with high-update radar technology to insure there is no violation. In this case, all the noise goes out over the water instead of over residential areas. I'd love to see your video when you get a chance but rest assured there is nothing abnormal about this happening. Such is only the case of the wonderful people of aviation trying to be considerate of their airport neighbors. You'd be surprised how many procedures are in place across the country and how much is done to try to minimize the airport's noise impact to neighboring communities... maybe someday they will create airliners that are so quiet nobody will be able to hear them come and go but until then... hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!
