Hmmm, i guess if you listen to this why you sleep you might be able to recognize aircraft by the sounds of their engines and the noises they make landing....

@O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting thats why i mentioned it, i am a huge car geek and i can tell a 911 from a Lamborghini or even a Veyron from a Lexus or other car from a block away (obviously without seeing it first), but i am good at telling whats what in the dark too..there's nothing like doing a 170MPH at 4am when you suddenly spot Dodge Charger tail lights in front of you, thats when its time to use those carbon ceramic brakes. But seriously i have worked in cars for 30+ years on the side and its funny how a Ford 3.6 V6 sounds totally different from a Porsche 3.6 F6 or even a Audi 3.0 or 3.2 V6 just to point out 1 example. I am sure planes are the same way, you can probably tell a Rolls Royce powered plane from a Pratt & Whitney powered jet and for now im guessing you stray away from 707Max with the P&W JT3D.... Now get me a ride in the SR71 with those afterburing axial-flow tuebojet P&W J58's and ill be right there.

Wow! 44 minutes of great snow action and my fatigue has flown from my body. However, I was busy today and did not get back to my château until just after midnight, so my contribution to your literary edification will have to wait a bit. But I did briefly peruse your post and know that I will be taking some notes, since I happen to find so much noteworthy already. However, I will leave you with some things I found regarding O’Hare Airport and making an easy to follow list of the aircraft you spotted. Actually, I hope your loyal subscribers might make use of these things. For I am one to share what I might find with anyone. I stumbled onto this website that has about all the information anyone might need about O’Hare, to include diagrams galore: www.aopa.org/destinations/airports/KORD/details. Secondly, to make an easier to read and follow list of the aircraft (under "Aircraft/Airlines Featured") you put in your introductory narrative, I discovered a quick, no-brainer technique to use with MS Word, that I hope will be useful to others who are as intense about plane-spotting as me. 1. I first copied and pasted the paragraph you wrote with all the aircraft into a MS Word document. 2. I opened up the “Find and Replace” function and filled each of the boxes with: A. “Find what” box - “, ” (a comma and space without the quotation marks). B. “Replace with” box - “^p^p” (a carrot [above the numeric 6] and the letter “p” without the quotation marks). This will replace all the aircraft delimited with a comma followed by a space with two newline characters. This gave me a single entry list that is double spaced. Here is one of the websites that helped me: www.officetooltips.com/word_2016/tips/replacing_special_characters.html. Anyway sir, I will be back as soon as I can and hopefully post a comment worthy of all the time and effort you put into your work that is so much fun to watch. By the way, if you are in a time crunch and do not have time to reply to what I eventually am able to write, that is no problem and my feelings will not be hurt. I’ll only cry for an hour or two. JUST KIDDING!

C-990 Buff Thanks much! I’m sorry you had to go to all that trouble to see a list of what I had included in this video. I took a long time to compile an additional list and then added it as a pinned comment since it was so long it didn’t fit in the description. Unfortunately it looks like it was not visible to everyone. Congratulations man! I've been watching you for as long as I can remember. Your videos were one of the primary things that got me into aviation. I would spend hours and hours trying to identify the aircraft you filmed. 7 years later, I still love watching your channel!

Yeah, as usual...you did not disappoint. Thank you, Jay...thank you for another superb vid...and for the 999 that came before (the great majority of which I have watched and thoroughly enjoyed over the years since I discovered your channel). Here's really hoping that you will be able to find the time in the coming years to produce many, many more vids for all of us aviation geeks to enjoy. :)

All Of Aviation I work at O’Hare... best recommendation is over at Wally Parking off Lawrence Ave on the east side. Stay on Scott St. and always spot with an ID. Some places you will see me filming from are private property and I am there in every case with permission. Just because I am able to does not automatically mean you can as well.

Hey Jay, any idea what prompted these 2 heavies to go around?

  • Canadian Plane Spotter

I see nobody has joined you in a chorus of the Go-around song yet...so: You can alwaaaays go around. If it don't looook riiiight comin' down. Don't wait until your sideways, maybe sliding upside-down. You can alwaaaays go around. :)

Some people, myself included, just do this for fun. Plane spotting is such a niche market anyway, so the amount of revenue dollars is negligible unless you have hundreds of thousands of active subscribers.

What a great surprise! Thank-you for sharing these previews of upcoming attractions from the “Jay O’Hare” Studios. I am reminded of so many things by watching this video. The first thing that came to my mind was being a business class passenger, who was just wrapping up an overseas flight. We were flying the pattern to land, and the snow was so dense that I could hardly see the wingtip. I really love flying in conditions like this, but with the help of my after dinner digestif of brandy, the experience was definitely heightened. Just think of it… You’re a totally helpless passenger with nothing to see but snow flakes streaking past at 180 mph. Furthermore, you have nothing but a handful of folks between the pilots and ATC attempting to thread your aircraft through a pattern and onto the runway, and none of them can see anything. It is times like these which I wish could last for hours (or at experience a go-around), but no; we landed safely. But when I looked up and saw many of the formerly white-knuckled passengers making the sign of the cross, I could not help but think, “What a waste.” They all aged 10 years for nothing and hardly came close to being within an inch of their lives. Maybe you can help me with this. Why is it that passengers these days feel compelled to start clapping after the aircraft touches down? As for the go-arounds, I remember standing on the old observation deck at O’Hare while waiting for my next flight. Even when conditions were clear, the frequency of go-arounds was about 2 an hour. Generally, it was due to one aircraft already lined up to takeoff and another on short-final. They were hard to miss, because once the pilot firewalled the throttles for the go-around, the engines on those 707’s and DC-8’s shook the terminal from a mile away. But the snow has now made me homesick (I grew up in Danville, 30 miles east of Champaign), because we had snow in the winter, just like it is supposed to do. The one amazing aspect of a snow storm is how well it muffles sounds. In fact, the silence at times is deafening. However, I would have loved to have been where you stood just to get a feel for how much the engine noise was softened by the snow storm. Thank-you again for the sneak peak into your next video. I hope you have access to other super secret locations from which to video, only accessible by showing your magic O’Hare secret decoder ring. I think I used to have one of those that I got from a cereal box years ago.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again... I love reading your comments, my friend. Would’ve loved to have heard a 707 go-around back in the day... i’ve heard and grew up with the 727s and once witnessed an old still functional Delta Dc-8 grace Runway 22L-4R but for the most part the 4-engine rockets were gone when I start patrolling ORD at a young age.To witness a classic DC-8 or 707 go-around in person would be pure magical sweet music for me I’m sure. Thankfully I have been able to experience a go-around a few times while onboard including one snowy time onboard a Saab 2000 in Alaska. Thanks always! More to come soon (I hope 😎)

It's a good idea and I will consider it. In past I have avoided putting excessive editing on a video because I believe it takes away from the experience. As I promised sir… I’d be back to write something worthwhile after viewing your video, and here I am. This is Guerry, and I reiterate just how great it is to see you back making posts on “TVclip” for us. Hopefully, you will not have to ditch us again in the future. However, if it means you are being promoted and earning more money, then I can hang around and wait. Your handheld shooting is still as good as ever. This leads me to conclude that your brief stay from making and posting videos did not throw you into depression so that you drank too much and made your hands shaky (JUST KIDDING!). As I usually do, I tried to pinpoint from where you videoed and have an about place. Unfortunately, “Google Maps” street views are too limited and do not allow me much close inspection of parking areas. Nevertheless, at least you did not have to contend with 2 mile long trains blocking your view and were able to capture some really great touchdowns on 10C. The only bad part of your video was the overcast skies. The restricted light made your camera boost its gain, so that things looked a bit grainy and not sharp and well contrasted. I know all of that is out of your control. I’m just pointing it out as someone who focuses on details, and most certainly I am not complaining. I remain as grateful for the video as ever. However, I did notice briefly the sun did make attempts to pierce the clouds, which did seem to sharpen the images somewhat as evidenced by the United 777-200 (@18:04). The one fascinating and most obvious detail I detected by your zooming in on it was its age. If you look at the wingtip (@18:17), you can see it is straight, which indicates it was built before Boeing used raked wingtips on its 777 models. This and many other aircraft details I have noticed in videos, primarily on US carriers is that airlines are still hanging onto their older aircraft. Although I am guessing, I assume that they are urgently waiting for the new Boeing 797 (or whatever its designation might be) to begin production. Overall, the views I enjoyed the most were the freight and passenger variants of the 747-800. That is such a beautiful aircraft with so many necessary design upgrades. It is such a shame that the industry has moved away from using the jumbo jets. Nevertheless for a while at least, I’ll be able to keep viewing them. Before I conclude and on something a bit off topic has to do with the B-17. I do not know how much time you have to read or watch movies, but one of the best movies that closely followed its most fascinating book is “Twelve O’clock High”. The movie is readily available, but unfortunately, the book is out of print. Both the movie and book are among the best I have seen and read that deal with leadership.. Although they are fictional, the book was written by B-17 pilots who packed fantastic, true to life principles into novel format. I just know how much you enjoy WW2 aircraft and thought that you would also be interested in what it took to be a crew member and squadron leader. I do know the book is still available in paperback form, but it is not cheap. In closing, thank-you for making a comeback. I just hope you are able to get back out to freezing to death and bringing us more great plane-spotting videos from Chicago. Just take a flask with you (JUST KIDDING!)

@O'Hare Aviation - Jay's HD Plane Spotting: You are so very kind with your reply, and I thank-you so very much. From where I sit, your videos are top notch, and I'd be confident comparing you to what others have posted. But on overcast days or whenever sunlight is limited, the physical limitations on cameras make it impossible to do a better job than you. But of course, if you have a few million dollars laying around and just gathering dust, I'm sure someone at "B&H Photo" could square you away. Anyway, I am so glad you do the job you do and video from Chicago. While you have been gone, I have had to hang in there with European photographers and found some who do a marvelous job. I just want to see more US carriers. So sir, until next time I will wait with eager anticipation!

C-990 Buff Always love your insightful and thorough comments on my videos. Truly your viewership of my channel is worthy of better content but I do try my best... sadly the sun went AWOL for this video due to the approaching snow squall. In a perfect world, I would be a professional TVclipr with a full-time job creating wonderful weekly content from my beloved O’Hare. Who knows? maybe this can still happen someday. The location I’m filming from is actually off-limits to the public but as an airport employee/airport watch member I have gained permission to spot there for now. Unfortunately I cant disclose the exact location in this comment. I gotta agree about the trains. I’m a railfan too under certain circumstances but airplanes come first by a long shot. I hope a 797 is in the works. Boeing desperately needs some good news these days. Perhaps it will be announced after this MAX issue blows over. So happy you mentioned it! Twelve O’clock High is a favorite of mine and my dad’s as both of us are self-proclaimed WW2 history enthusiasts and my dad owns a copy that sits in a place of honor in his TV cabinet. A classic, great watch for sure! More videos to come soon (I hope). Thanks always, Guerry!!
