I was there from March 1983 to December 1985. I loved working for ASA ("ACEY"). Always loved that call sign. Wonderful group of people. None better. Hired on as a EMB-110(Bandit) FO in 1983. Upgrade in those days was 6 months or less. As as Captain and IP, I had the pleasure of working for Captain Dan Robertson-Chief Pilot/Director of Training. A true professional and prince of a guy. He spoke these words to my new-hire class: "(1) Come to work when you're supposed to (2) Don't go below MINIMUMS (3) Don't fly broken airplanes and (4) Don't try to do any favors for the company and violate FARs." He meant it....Inspirational Words I never forgot throughout the next 30 years on the B-727/737/757/767. Best boss I've ever had. Thank you Danny. Sue Stevens-Pilot Hiring Personnel...thank you Sue. So incredibly nice. ASA was the first operator or the EMB-120(Brasilla) which was a real "game changer" of a aircraft with its range and speed. Very high tech for 1985.(EFIS). I was very lucky to be part of EMB-120 first IP class. Pilot hiring in those days was full blast. Everybody, at every level. Many times I've looked back and wondered if I should of stayed. I truly loved flying there. In and out of KATL. This is a wonderful tribute to ASA. ASA was its people. A very good place at a very good time in aviation history. Painful to believe they are gone after almost 40 years, like the other uniforms I wore at EAL, PAA, and CAL. If you personally know someone who flew at ASA, please forward this to them. I'm sure they'd like to see this wonderful video. Thanks for doing it. RC

ALPA is the main problem in the industry today! They insist on seniority by the company. Lose your job in a layoff or bankruptcy? start your entire career (and pay) over every time that happens. Wise up. this is not 1960. Companies come and go today. NO ONE wants to play seniority roulette with their livelihood. Rethink. Modernize. Airline unions are stuck in the stone ages and are destined to suffer. ALPA has no interest in any individual's employment security as a professional pilot, as evidenced by their failure to modernize the seniority system. PROTEST ALPA. YOU ARE ONLY ONE AIRLINE BANKRUPTCY AWAY FROM CAREER FAILURE.

ALPA SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!. IF they truly were on the lookout on the individual level, then they would not allow any furlough to screw up a seniority number of an individual person.. MY GOD, that is from the 1960 era when all businesses survived. NOW, Airlines go bankrupt, furlough, etc. ALPA needs to get their ACT TOGETHER and enforce seniority across all airlines. TILL THEN, it is a crap shoot for an individual to even try. ALPA, either change your ways or die! GOOD RIDDANCE to ALPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Jgmatp
    Jgmatp 11 months ago

OK if ALPA was truly on your side, they would negotiate a contract across ALL airlines. It is well known that if teachers move from one state to another, they retain their seniority and pay based on years of service. IF I am furloughed tomorrow, I must relinquish my seniority and cut my pay by 3/4. BULLSHIT ALPA. Figure out the correct model for today, not 1960. Otherwise I hope you go away. Good riddance.

(Aug. 2018) Capt. David Tatum, American Airlines,Director of Pilot Recruitment. American has thousands of current and competitive applications on hand. With our regional flow providing approximately 50% of all our new hire positions, we have considerably more great candidates than we have positions to fill. Despite the fact many of our applicants are also applying at other mainline carriers, our competitive pool has remained very consistent in size if not growing slightly. We are certainly in good shape for the foreseeable future when it comes to providing our cockpits with the best aviators possible.

this is a typicasl money fight. Do we not see the possibility of a pilot's union or parity committee forcing airlines to pay a more reasonable wage and thus considerably raising the cost of flying, at the risk of big booking losses? It happened with truckers and many other occupations, why would we imaging it can't happen with pilots, especially less that the heavy class, but it could also affect the heavies.

theres no doubt. pilots make a horrible living. These numbers are however monotonous since they are not from an actual study of any sort. Theres no way of telling how many people of the 2400 retired air force pilots actually want to fly airline. Probably a high number are going to retire..Even the 6300 "new atp" graduates. I would be willing to bet a good 50% do a career change as they have probably gained more than a pilot license such as a degree. Its no joke there is a pilot shortage. Here in Canada, there definitely IS a pilot shortage. Instead of looking at unsourced stats from a TVclip video. Look at the job adverts in your area. Im seeing a lot more "beginner pilot" job ads these days. If you hate the pay, go work at Mcdonalds and make more flipping burgers, nobody is stopping you or go work in an office nothing wrong with that.

You want to blame Norwegian for the "decimation" of the American airline industry? Ha! You decimated yourselfs with poor service and greed. How about making a video about airlines from the United States farming out their maintenance to 3rd world countries like Aeroman in El Salvador? The real fear here is once people in United States get a taste of what they've been missing out on they'll never fly on any air carrier based out of the United States again.

US Airlines are just salty that Norwegian are way ahead in terms of cheap travel from continental Europe to America (and others). Instead of complaining take a leaf from AIG (British Airways' parent) and start an airline (Levels) which rivals that of Norwegian. I personally flew Norwegian from London to Los Angeles and London to San Francisco and they were great, new 787-9 aircraft and affordable travel.

  • NinerFourWhiskey

The threat is that United, American, Lufthansa, KLM and so on will simply form subsidiaries, flagged in countries like Liberia. The aircraft, the maintenance and the flight crews will meet the standards of countries like Liberia. Even though you bought a ticket on United or American, or Virgin or Lufthansa, you'll actually be flying on a third-world airline, on aircraft maintained to third-world standards and crewed by staff trained and payed by third-world standards. Cabotage rules at present would prevent domestic flights from being operated this way, but this opens the door to international flights to operate under flag of convenience schemes. If you want to fly Aeroflot or China Airlines, fine, go buy a ticket on them. But this opens the door to American Airlines flights, with airplanes bearing American livery, actually being foreign operations, conducted to non-US standards. That's not fair trade.

    • Randallator
      Randallator 2 years ago

The problem is that you separate the problems. You need to talk about pay but there is a pilot shortage due to lack of interest in aviation.

    • Sheepzorable
      Sheepzorable 2 years ago

That's not true. There is plenty of interest in aviation, there was a statistic released a few weeks ago that there are currently approximately 126,000 ATP licensed pilots within the US, but up there are only 72,000 pilot jobs up for grabs. There is in no way a lack of pilots due to lack of interest, there is plenty of interest, however the pay is what turns some people around.

TO SUM IT UP: I've been listening to these rumors of pilot shortage for last 12 years - non-stop. Even when airlines were laying off pilots right and left!! I could not believe flight schools and regionals would be so blatant about it! Throughout my career I flew everything from DC-4 to B-747-8F and can absolutely guarantee you, and you can "take it to the bank" - THERE WILL BE NO PILOT SHORTAGE IN THE NEAR FORESEEABLE FUTURE (20-30 years). BUT there will be pilot layoffs though. The market is over saturated with overqualified professionals (with thousands of hours of command experience) and pilot shortage is the invention of flight schools and regional airlines, who make their living by abusing and taking advantage of the fact that there are thousands upon thousands of guys and gals who want to become pilots! Here is something to consider: tvclip.biz/video/LKdMbW5y1Rk/video.html

A pilot in norwegian still makes more in two months than what I do a year, It's about time that we regulate the salary of the aviation industry. - Norwegian is only trying to make the fare cheaper. And they are successful, competition is needed in order to get better prices. In Europe, Today. It's cheaper to go by plane, than train. Just because of this.

As a student currently attending college in order to become an airline pilot i can say with 100% certainty that this video is just false. The first year average pilot pay, depending on the airline is closer to 40k and with benefits and signing bonuses can be closer to 60k. Not the 22k you had claimed.

    • Bvail
      Bvail 2 years ago

yes, but going the college route like i am most of the students become CFIs with the college and depending on how much you work as a CFI you can get your required 1500 hours and then immediately move up to a regional airline. Several instructors at my school have been able to get their required hours before graduation

Xzonerance I got hired at envoy in may and with the over 10k signing bonuses and wage increases first year pay is much better, around 50k. Wages across the regional airline industry have drastically changed in the past year.

    • Steez
      Steez 2 years ago

Xzonerance this video was created a few years ago and since then a lot has changed. There isn't necessarily a "Pilot Shortage" but regionals are hiring a lot. Starting regional salaries range from about 30-60 first year now (60 only if you qualify which few do)

    • Xzonerance
      Xzonerance 2 years ago

That is very well true for the major airlines such as delta and american. However in order to become a first officer there you must first slog it out in the regional where pay does start just above minimum wage for your first year at around 20k. Although it does increase fairly considerably in your second year to the low 30s.

That's one of the dumbest videos ever! The motherland of capitalism wants to cancel other businesses right of dropping prices and being competitive! You should be ashamed of this video! Bigotry and stupidity all in the same place

ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ ΛΙΑΡΟΣ no. Regional airlines pay first year first officers 60k plus. Majors pay thier pilot's 250k plus. Learn the facts. It's not 2002 anymore.

not entirely true Robert Derby, they told us in a guest lecture at my college that the pilots are actually european and americans, and a lot of the americans are moving to them from the likes of emirates to be closer to home

First that's rasist so fuck you Secondly most of their pilots are European Third the Aviation scene in the US is a shitshow pilots are getting payed pennies and passengers pay ridiculously high fairs for bad service... The 3 major carriers have a monopoly and control fairs and can charge whatever they want and pay their staff minimum wage
