I like the Director's Cut better

  • vinler
    vinler 3 days ago

It would appear this is the director's cut being reviewed witch I saw first and the finally seen the theatrical cut possibly last years. The Director's Cut had not extra scenes add to the movie but some scenes were moved to different places. Maybe I'm biased having seen the Director's Cut first but that is, In my opinion, the better version. I don't really know what the movie is saying, and I don't care, but I liked it because it seemed, to me, original and different.

This has really become an increasing trend with NC's content. Today I'm reviewing a film with two polarized sides, and I see the reasons behind both and fall somewhere in the middle. Just once I'd like to see Doug examine polarizing film and fall firmly on one side. I suppose we got that with Man of Steel, but that movie was ages ago.

I grew up a goth (tragic I know) but somehow I never saw this movie, I think some part of me assumed it was overrated, but watching this review and seeing a lot of these scenes makes me glad I never saw it. Donnie is very similar to how most of us goths were in my town and seeing this would've either made me feel justified in staying goth longer, or made me feel disgusted with myself and seek out much more help than I needed at the time.... I eventually grew into needing that much help but I didn't need it at the time.

Donnie Darko bored me and my friend out of our minds. We heard so much about this movie, it would be sooo cooool and clever. No. We did not get any of these vibes. Afterwards I researched a bit and found all this online-information. The book, the newspaper clips etc.
It was kiiiiinda interesting that you had to look a these things as the movie is just like 70% of all the story.

But you know what is strange? EVERYBODY I talked about this movie did not know about all that and still adores the movie. And this totally wonders me.

    • Parker Dalglish
      Parker Dalglish 17 days ago

I'm convinced people just say they like the movie to seem insightful. A movie should be able to stand on its own without outside resources and, even with the resources, it always just came off as wannabe insightful. Another movie that fits this description is Predestination. Sometimes, when a movie is nonsensical while saying what it thinks to be deep material, it isn't that you don't understand it, it's the movie itself is bad.

Night Mind here on youtube does an excellent job explaining everything that might have confused anyone (besides the acting) The time travel, Donnie's powers, the significance of Frank and Gretchen, Roberta Sparrow, the Fourth Dimensional construct (the watery chest bubble) that leads Donnie to the gun that he would later use to kill Frank, etc. Please watch it. His voice is kinda annoying but the message is really cool.

It's possible to understand something and still think it's shit. I understand Donnie Darko but it's not entertaining enough to overlook it's flaws. Meanwhile Looper was entertaining enough that I can overlook the fact the conclusion that young Joe came up with is dumbshit. (In Old Joe's timeline he killed the previous loop's old Joe so no one killed the kid's mom so the kid wouldn't have gone down the dark path so killing himself didn't stop the kid from going down the dark path.)
Anyway I digress .The only thing I liked about Donnie Darko was introducing me to Mad World cuz that song was amazing.
