  • Golf's distance debate, explained.
Become a Video Lab member! bit.ly/video-lab
These days, pro golfers are hitting the ball far. Really far. And it's creating a problem: because modern golfers can reach the hole with fewer shots than before, older courses -- like Augusta National Golf Club, Oakmont Country Club, and others -- are becoming obsolete. Now, professional organizations, like the United States Golf Association, are struggling to find a solution for big powerful golfers like Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, and Tiger Woods. While the jump in distance is due to lots of factors, conversation is centering on the controversial possibility of redesigning the golf ball to reduce distance. It'd be the latest turn in the ball's long history: Golf balls have evolved from "featheries," to gutties, to balata balls, and eventually dimpled modern balls. But the biggest, and most recent change? The almost-instantaneous switch from wound balls to solid core multilayer balls like the Titleist Pro V1.

No one should ever go back to a worse design, they should always find a way to overcome the obstacle and improve on it. People will get stronger and better over time so to ignore the problem will just make it even harder to over come when it returns. Just imagine if we did give our balls more drag or what ever what will happen when thats no longer enough, we cant go back the newer balls and we cant just make our balls worse and worse ether, so the only option then would be to make fake contentions to make the game harder. To limit progress is immature and arrogant and its so common that its the first option most people take now.

Trigonometry: a²+b²=c². By cutting the corner means that more distance is covered faster = few shot= faster tornaments= More tornaments= more shots take= more distance.

The issue with merely pushing the tee box back to compensate hitting the ball further is an environmental one. The amount of water, fertiliser and maintainance needed to make the hole longer multiplied by every golf course out there is pretty rediculous.
As for us amateurs, new golf balls are just fine!

Golf courses can't just get bigger everywhere in the world. Augusta has loads of money to buy land but lay local golf courses cannot. I don't think golf should be a two tear category ether with pros using a different type of golf ball. Maybe pro courses should become more narrow like my course.

  • Christopher Osborne

Golf is one of the only sports where equipment isn't regulated. Perhaps regulations should be placed? Only clubs and balls with regulation specifications for tournament play? The fact that anybody can bring just about anything (within reason) is certain to give some players advantages over others, when you'd much rather prefer seeing a player win on skill alone by making all other things equal.

  • markdelej

It’s not because of the titleist pro V 1 that people are hitting it further. Pro V 1’s arent even the golf balls that go the furthest, they are more for spin than distance. Every company now pretty much has the inside of the ball looking like the titleist one shown.

    Hello fellow mario golfers.

  • Craig Torlay
    Craig Torlay Day ago

There is a simple solution. Just like in tennis why doesn't each tournament play with the one ball and different tournaments have different balls. It works for everyone. It is fair as everyone is using the same ball at the tournament, it works for companies as they get every player showing off and using their ball at the tournament and it works for the courses as specific balls can be used to match the lengths of courses.

No reason that they can't just regulate and approve what the core of the ball is made of and how it's made.. it's no different than any other sport.. such as Basketball or Baseball, that they have a standard "regulation" ball, or even non-ball sports, such as Nascar, how the association regulates the design and performance of the cars. It's pretty stupid that Golf in this day and age doesn't have any tight regulation over the manufacturing of the golf ball that's approved for use in official games.
