Why do American kids learn about a peanut guy in school? Couldn't they use that time to learn something significant? But I guess I now know why Americans are so ignorantly dumb

Man, I was born in 83 so I remember this kind of situation. One time for school I needed to find the word that matched a given definition and the only question I couldn't find was the name of a person who drew maps. We didn't have an encyclopedia set and that section of my dad's huge dictionary (the biggest book we had in my parent's substantial book collection) had had something spilled on it that made the whole page illegible. My mom couldn't remember, my dad couldn't remember, my uncle didn't answer his phone and my grandmother was sleeping and wasn't cogent when she answered. By then it was past 11pm and school started for me at 7:20. Finally, I remembered that in the first scene of the movie "close encounters with the third kind" an actor describes himself as a mapmaker so my mom and I put the vhs on and fast forwarded to the scene where the actor shouted the word we had been serching two hours for: "cartographer!" Life was so much harder pre-Google. Us older millennials remember the struggle.

Man, this was an excellent Maron bit and as always Colbert made it weird. He either needs to get with the program or stop having them out. So glad Jim Jefferies and Burr both subtly called him on it during their interviews.

This is the difference between millennials and whatever generation you say came before them. I was born in 1979 and this sounds like everything up until I was in my early twenties and while I am sometimes grouped into the millennial generation there are other millennials that had the internet as long as they can remember and smart phones when they were in middle school. I remember my family getting an answering machine when I was about 10 and it was only for my dad's business line for the first year or so. Not saying anything bad about millenials, just saying most of us born in 1979 are not part of that generation.

Marc has always been my favorite podcastian...his late night appearances, especially early on, and especially with early Conan, were always.., Manic.... Panicked. and disturbingly charming. Now albiet the nature of these panels often, in my guestimation, can sometimes paint Maron maybe just a pinch more rushed than his usual off the cuff, but calmly on the stool, inward jabbing comic-self.. but this quick little appearance on Mr. Sarcastisaurass REX-himself Stephen Colbert. was in my eyes , really just F***ing perfect. Maron has the balls to tackle arguably some of the most borderlineishhy-hacky-premise-eeey subject manor that normally could seem obvious or trite if coming from a lesser practiced stand-up. but Maron's slick, purposeful bouncing betwence the "aging old crank" and the "revisionist history-fried documentarion" is just pure comic gold. I'm going to make a pretty obvious prediction...I think he has another hour special festering in him, that should very well cement him a sure spot in the proverbial... Stand-Up Comedian...- Hall of Fame.. because you see kids...Boomer surely Lives!

Sort of a similar joke to Pete Holmes “Tom Petty” bit, but great & hilarious on its own. Both jokes are great. 👍

  • daniel stewart

The gist of his argument is true. We have allowed electronics take control of our lives. When i was younger after the evening meal the kids would either do homework or go outside and play games, like hide & seek or kick the can, and the parents would usually go out and sit on the porch. They'd look around and see other people and walk over and actually talk with each other.
In our neighborhood everyone knew each other. They kept watch and when a stranger showed up people knew about it. Nowadays most people don't even know who lives in the house next to theirs.
Sad to say when i was real young not everyone in the neighborhood had a phone or even a television. Plus the TV only had 2 channels.
Now if the interweb goes down my wife and kid lose it. They don't have a clue what to do except bitch and call around to see why it's not working. They're like vampires they cant go out in the sun.
