  • TechnoVision
    TechnoVision 4 months ago +6

I found this episode to be one of the best episodes of the series. The ending is incredible at showcasing how impactful global events becomes just another notification on our screen, and that we will often post to social media or like a post only to move on with our lives, rather than learning from the messages that heartbreaking stories such as this one detail.
It also showcases the extreme violation of privacy in social media and how often tech corporations can have more immediate access to your entire life than the police or government.
Even more so, the episode showcases how crime and mystery is completely changed in a smartphone world. The smallest tweet can have the biggest impact on an entire investigation.
Even scarier, it’s almost as if Black Mirror is shaming themselves like they did with fifteen million merits. They know that we will watch these episodes, feel great pain for humanity, but ultimately move on without really addressing the problem. Another hot fix of entertainment...

@GenocideVirus Apologies for the late response. Don't see how my question was "stupid". But anyway. I would definitely watch other episodes rather than smithereens. But that's taken into account the WHOLE series. I'm talking about THIS season. It's definitely better than striking vipers and episode 3's garbage. However, I can agree when it comes to the series as a whole, it's definitely weaker than something like White Christmas. But smithereens is still grounded having it set in the present makes the episode more impactful and the main character we are given is one of the best in the series. Well, for me anyway. Thinking about it, it did fall flat when delivering something shocking for the audience, even if it was intense

I think the dramatic point of the scene was to invest you in the outcome only to remind you, that in the real world, this one all be just one more notification on our phones and not giving you the closure of seeing what happened heightens that disconnect. All you are left with is that reminder of how apart from reality we have become

Doesn't matter, the point is that the crowd, the people looking at their phone in the end, react indifferent either way. That's what technology does.
As a real answer: Chris dies either way. Either he gets shot, or the other guy gets shot and Chris still kills himself.

This is, without a doubt THE best episode of Black Mirror yet. I watched all three of Season 5 in one binge (how in fuck can three episodes be considered a 'season'?) Andrew Scott's performance will, undoubtedly win him awards, as will Charlie Brooker's outstanding writing. Yes, we only get three episodes this year, but all three were great, with Smithereens being quite outstanding and unforgettable.

Yup, reckon this one will take home a BAFTA/EMMY or two. Considering the episode "San Junipero" won an Emmy for Charlie Brooker, Smithereens was way better than that. It's a no-brainer that this should win. I'll tear my hair out if the Mylie Cyrus episode wins and this doesn't (but in fairness she was pretty great in that).
