Eternals' Origins - Before The Rise of Man

  • Published on Feb 3, 2016
  • This video looks at the origins of the Eternals as laid out in:
    What If Vol. 1 #24-28
Agents of Atlas Vol 1 #3
    Marvel Boy: The Uranian #1-2
This is part of an ongoing series covering all things cosmic in the Marvel Universe and meant to act as a bridge between Parts 2 & 3 of my Marvel Boy series.
Edit for a more accurate timeline: Uranos ship was destroyed - Marvel Two-In-One Vol 1 #71 states, "The Inhumans . . . were given a genetic boost some 20,000 years past." I will go ahead and state that there may be additional Marvel Comics that give a different time frame. If so, please message me or comment so that I can update this section! Thanks!
One minor mistake I noticed: Near the end of the video I refer to the Native Uranians as Aboriginals when I should have said Aboriginoids.

4:00 -- That's probably how it started when the King first wrote the Eternals because... well, white guy who grew up during the '20s and '30s. Since then, there's been the Meso-American Eternal, Ajak, the engineering Eternal Phastos (who inspired the Greco-Roman god Hephaestus/Vulcan despite being black), and the Japanese KIngo Sunen, who I think may have been inspired visibly by Toshiro Mifune. And of course over the years, there's been random, non-white minor Eternals usually in the background.

I usually do canned response to this. But yeah, look at the number stories Kirby had already written by that time. He had no idea that this one would stick for the next 60+ years. This was an attempt to get a little humor out of that oversight. I never thought one little joke would get this much attention. The Eternals are now one of the most diverse groups in Marvel and minority Eternals show up by Issue #11. I think this was my third video. YT was edgier back then and I was still experimenting with the format. Not every joke is going to land.
I still throw in lots of humor but have learned to style it different over time.
Edit: thanks for commenting on it without raging.

Seriously. You have to bring race into comics? Most of The Eternals don't even look human! I suppose all the blue, purple, and orange people don't even count as races. I'm sick and tired of everything being about color or sexuality! I don't fucking care! It doesn't matter. These are charecters that have been around what , 50 years or more? Fuck you and your white hatred. There's nothing wrong with being white. There really are only 2 sexes too. It's biology stupid! You can put on a costume but that doesn't change who you are. Accept yourself and you'll have a lot less problems because you'll find out no one cares!

This has become my copypasta response since I get this a lot:

This isn't social commentary as much as it is poking fun and having fun with an oversight by authors who wrote this over 50 years ago and had no idea how influential the story would become. Not every joke is going to land but kinda hard to change the set list after the fact on a 3 year old video. Hands down Marvel pushes for diversity and representation and did so even in the way back. Minority Eternals show up by issue #11 and are now one of the most diverse groups in Marvel comics. Can we laugh at some of the absurdities of the past? This was one of my first vids and YT was an edgier place back then - learned to put a little more tongue in my tongue in cheek since then.

I'm sure Jack Kirby, a Jew who fought in WWII wasn't thinking aboutThe Eternals as white overlords. They were based off of the Greek gods, who they would be mistaken for in ancient times. The Greek pantheon also did not have much racial diversity. So there you go.

I usually have a longer coy and paste response. But for sure they showed by issue 11. Just jokes and mild social commentary on a couple of white guys not taking something into consideration over 50 years ago - especially when they had no way of knowing the story would have the long lasting impact that it did. Yep, ironically the Eternals are now one of the most diverse groups in Marvel.
Edit: consider the shear volume of material these guys had already produced that didnt stick

With the intro of Thanos on the table i am curious to see where in they pick the story up. And based on the current MCU they could easily rewrite entire story. Hope they don't but... See exhibit A - The Infinity Saga. Loved it but it's way off from the Thanos and InfinG I know and remember. Love it - but I grew up eating vanilla ice cream. Now you start serving me strawberry ice cream. It's good. Both are ice cream. But you know I am always gonna prefer that nilla.

You say right below the comment where I point out the issue the first minority Eternal appeared, mention Marvel's push for diversity, and mention that Eternals are now one of the most diverse races?
Check your comics history b/c the time period i am hitting up in this issue has all the Eternals living together in Titanos. This is first generation Eternals we are talking about here. Got to get that timeline down. I even cover when their initial split takes place, leading to the Eternals of Uranus. Most of what I discuss in this vid takes place approx 750,000 BCE up to the events following the death of Kronos. The Eternals didnt arrive at Olympia until about 3,000 BCE. AFTER the death of Kronos. His death led to the first Uni-Mind (also covered in this vid). This is what led to Zuras founding the city of Olympia You sorta skipped 747,000 years of Eternal history there.

They are all white because they all came from the same small controlled environment. Its why the Vodū (African) Gods - in Marvel Universe universe are all black and the Amatsu-Kami (Japanese gods) are all Asian and why both of the Skrull gods Sl'gur't and Kly'bn are both green and Shi'ar gods K'ythri and Sharra are bird like. Not everything has evil intent.

    • CosmicComics
      CosmicComics  3 months ago +1

Heh. This was my first or second vid. It was meant tongue in cheek but I learned quickly that the internet can't always tell. I was under the impression that the gods are generally of a particular race because they were formed from the minds of men. The gods (and their powers - even reality of their creation myths) are made of the godstuff left behind when Demo-Gorge changed back into Atum and went to live in the sun. The Eternals on the other hand are genetically modified humans (or a close relative). The gods of the Skrulls also tie back into Celestial genetic modification. I forget the origins of the Shi'ar deities off the top of my head. I should have clarified that the minority Eternals show up by issue #11. I don't think it was evil intent. I think it was simple oversight by a bunch of white guys back in the 60's. Guys who typically did a great job of pushing for inclusion. Might be one of the reasons why the Eternals are now one of the most racially diverse groups in Marvel comics. See, I should have also pointed that out. Some of the earlier videos are edgier - takes awhile to find ones voice. In the end it did what I needed - got people to comment on the video. I probably would have reposted it but didn't want to lose the traction it had or take the chance that TVclip would slap my early channel for repetitive content uploads.

When the Eternals come back as a monthly title I want to see the first modern appearance of Daina who is the mother of Zuras and Alars aka Mentor and the paternal grandmother of Thanos Thena and Eros aka Starfox and I think Thanos Eros and Alars should be a major part of the monthly title and I want to see Thena and Eros vs Thanos and marvel has to bring Alars back from the dead and Daina has red hair since her son Zuras and and grandson Eros have red hair and it can be revealed that Daina trained Thena in hand to hand combat and they should bring Alars back from the dead since he was recently killed by his son Thanos but I want to see Alars with his black hair again.

Most comic book characters never eat, have to go to the restroom, get the flu (or other generally communicable diseases), the ladies don't have a "that" time of the month and the guys don't get erections in their tights. If they did go pee we know the guys would occasionally get a little spotting on the front of their tights from that last drop that didn't want to cooperate or from the ladies not being able to wipe off effectively due to a lack of toiletries. Notice that nobody in the Marvel Universe needs to take a snack to help combat low blood sugar on their way to save the world.

Not all Eternals are white. In like the 11th issue of Eternals, Kirby introduced the Japanese Eternal Kingo, saying Eternals are "as varied as humans". Walt Simonsson would go one to create the black Eternal Phastos.

@CosmicComics maybe it depends on the sociology class or sub discipline because I have definitely seen it defined as basically racial prejudice in sociology. The only place I'm aware where that definition is used would be in critical theory. Is what you're referring to critical sociology or something similar?

    • CosmicComics
      CosmicComics  Month ago

@hitek alchemy yeah... about that. i got it set up so comments with links don't show up. not discriminating perspectives - it's my auto spam filter. But yes, I am familiar with when the idea came forth and developed throughout the 60's and 70's - but it's well established within social science now. Paradigm shifts happen and that was one of them. I was trying to reflect the modern pespective whereby social science rides the knife's edge between post-modernism and statistics.

When touching on race as biological - your definition is very much or close to way sociologist would refer to ethnicity which does have biological roots. One line that is continuously stressed from Sociology and/or Anthropology 101 on is "race has nothing to do with biology."

So much of this comes down to defining terms such as race, nationality, cultural heritage, culture and heritage seperately, individual identity, ethnicity, and legal definitions. And it doesn't help that academics and day to day culture use the terms in very different ways.

    • CosmicComics
      CosmicComics  Month ago

@Msnyre W - yeah. I don't think anybody here means ill will toward you. You're complaining about the car's engine being broken while we're quibbling over a headlight. That isn't lost.

But as I said earlier. And as you said earlier. And even @hitek alchemy said earlier. If we all think everybody else is getting the definition about something wrong (look three people and it bounces around) then it makes it hard to have a conversation about something. What is being played out here is differing perspectives on the homogeneous discourse (the rules dictating what we can talk about in society and how we can talk about it). We are all responding to and attempting to define a concept from different sub-cultural perspectives. It's a great example of post-modernism, feminist perspectives, and newtonian worldviews all be encapsulated to varying degrees by three different individuals.

Post modernism would say the readers interpretation of our words (even if they do not encapsulate the original intent) are just as valid as our original perspective. To deny the validity of the readers perspective is to deny them agency. It all comes down to everybody has an opinion and they are all valid. Damn post-modernism.

I'm post-post modernist. And the social science side of me has to say all three definitions are right while the engineer in me wants to nail it down and make it definable within a box.

What I hear from you is a desire to talk and discuss some of these larger issues and address that they exist. But in doing so semantics is always going to be the first wall we run into. We have to scale that wall. If we want to make it better we have to move past that moment. Everybody in the convo mostly seems to be on or at least near the same page and supportive of your greater narrative. Don't give up on allies after the first tangent. The larger social narrative is more important than the details.

And yeah this is just a TVclip thread but everytime these conversations happen they stay up - at least for awhile. This is now a part of our cultural record. And the narrative is changing.

The more threads like this the better. It's better than white supremacist threads, or any other kind of hateful threads. This is just people trying to wrap their head around a complicated issue. And for me and anybody else who reads all this - before jumping on or into this - instead of judging, step back and try to hear what each of the perspectives is trying to say. They all lead to the same place - discrimination isn't cool and we all want to treated like people and to live our lives with agency and not have people come at us with preconceived notions.

I'm sure some will have a problem with even that but its where I rest my hat on the issue.

3:58 wasn't Kingo Sunsen a Japanese eternal? He must've been similar enough to pass as a Japanese man, considering that his film career of playing samurai reached an international audience. Heck, Ikaris even says to Margo something along the lines of "I really don't know why you're so suprised, we Eternals are as varied as you humans" and there's even a dark-skinned Eternal in the background

So wait, did A'Lars and Sui-San completely repopulate Titan by themselves? Because if that's the case then why was Eros considered Thanos' only brother instead of the entirety of Titan? I've read a ton of wikis on how Titan came to be populated, and they all give contradictory information on whether it was entirely A'Lars and Sui-San or if other Earth Eternals joined up with them at a later date

I think it was probably the A'Lars and Sui-San answer out of the two. I would need to dust off some comics to make certain. Then Eros gets pulled into a Uni-Mind.

Granted, it was the Kirby era and the Celestials could have "advanced" there genes but it's objectively a fair point that has since been addressed in Gaimans run and others. @Judea Rattet. imo - For people who want equality we all seem to be getting overly sensitive to color (in a way we all weren't bothered with before). We shouldn't weaponise color, when the idea of these stories (from the writer's/artists view) is a metaphorical one (as well as being based in Greek mythos etc). Many people should be able to read these stories and be inspired (instead of dwelling on the external substance of characters).

    • CosmicComics
      CosmicComics  2 years ago +3

Great response! And right across the board. I might argue that due to their stable genes, slow breeding, and small numbers that in general the Eternals wouldn't have had enough time or successive generations (and possibly the inability) to adapt to local conditions in the same manner as the "normal" humans. Furthermore there is no guarantee that they would exhibit the same mutations as regular humans (blonde hair, loss of melanin in the skin, etc.). But I'm merely playing up the act of looking at this from a serious scientific perspective. Because... we can find out more information about genetics in five minutes online than Jack Kirby had available to him throughout his lifetime. From a cultural perspective we have a middle aged white male writing comics in the 60's for an audience of mostly young white men during a time when multiculturalism was only beginning to take hold. The comics are a product of their times (but I'll still try to keep an eye out for blatent sexism or racism and point it out as needed because I enjoy adding a little social commentary to my videos). Uncle Snorker assumes I'm a white male and is more than welcome to hate anybody for pointing out the social biases of a particular point in history and how that might differ from a more modern social perspective. Separate from that... Peter, I think we're both on the same page here as I agree with what you've said (and plan on addressing these issues in later videos). Yes there are eventually Eternals of other races (just as eventually Marvel starts to have a more multicultural cast) but it takes time to get there (and allows me to point out these acknowledgements to diversity as they develop within the narrative). I appreciate your insightful comments and it makes me think I might do a video at some point on the development of racial diversity and how changing cultural perspectives have forced Marvel to retcon old narratives. But... it'll be a minute as the list of videos I want to make grows faster than I can make them.

    • Peter Blaikie
Peter Blaikie 2 years ago +3

philipee32 I would agree with this as well as it does make more sense. When this was written much of the racial evolution theory was not yet formed so we are left only with Jack Kirby who created the Eternals for Marvel Comics. Since it is really fiction we are left with only the writers imaginations (and no doubt written for the audience at the time in the 60's and 70's.
