  • Is the patty melt a burger or a sandwich? It’s a debate that holds a different meaning in SoCal, where the patty melt was born. To pay tribute to this underrated burger, Alvin is linking up with patty melt legend, chef Christian Page, to scout the best of what L.A. has to offer. From eating the historical patty melt at the famous diner, Du-pars, to sampling the new-school version at Cassell's-which chef David Chang crowned as "best in class"-get ready for Alvin's quest to find the ultimate patty melt.

I got to say I love this series so much it's one of my favorites, but I noticed y'all talk about Shake Shack and in and out a lot and they're both amazing places. I do have to say though you're missing one of the greatest fast food restaurants ever and I believe it should take a place in the top five Regional Burger fast food joints and that's Whataburger just like in and out is West Coast Shake Shack is east coast you got to have South Coast was Whataburger I love to see y'all do an episode about them sometime.

Would complain about putting sauce on the side but I like my patty melt on sourdough, not rye. So, if I was ever lucky enough to eat at Cassell’s, I guess I can spread my own sauce. :)

Anyone know what is in that dipping sauce from Cassell's? Horse radish? I love me patty melts but they are sometimes hard to find. In the Inland Empire SoCal, Farmer Boys does a pretty decent one.

I swear this show thinks California invented everything that has to do with a hamburger. "Back in 1915 in Santa Monica my grandfather picked up the burger and it burned his hand. As a reaction he put the burger on a plate and that was the first time a burger was served to a customer on a plate".

"Is the Patty Melt a burger or a sandwich?" What kind of question is that? That's like asking "Is a Pepsi a soda or a drink?" A Pepsi is a drink that is a soda. Just like how a Patty Melt is a sandwich that's a burger, because burgers ARE sandwiches. Question made no sense to me.

The Patty Melt is one of my all time favorite ways to eat a Burger. A nice crunchy outer bread and the swiss and American cheeses and those low and slow carmalized onions. And it absolutely has to be Marble Rye Bread!!!!!100%

What is funny is the fact that Americans always paint a picture like they are nice and accepting to the weird. But you guys are nasty, your judgemental, you hate it when someone does not conform to your idea of perfect, you are unforgiving. I wonder what your country would look like in 40 years with this wicked sense of humour. A fat man may die of obesity, you really think he is not aware, you think it doesn't bother him. Would you give him another job if he quits this one. You can never truly think for another person such a selfish bunch. What made America great was Christ without Christ your true colours are out. Judging, haters without any love in your tongue.

Sherri's diner in Twin Falls Idaho makes a damn good patty melt. A thick luscious patty topped with a mountainous layer of caramelized onions and sweet mayo.(optional bacon and cheese but I would recommend) sandwiched between rich marbled rye toasted to perfection.

Telling fat people to not eat/lose weight is like telling a junkie not to shoot up.
You can't tell them shit. They have to want to do it for their own reasons, and you telling them over and over just makes them want to eat more- because their attitude is like "fuck you, you aren't my boss, I'll eat whatever the fuck I want".
I know because my best friend is even fatter than him, and I realized years ago that telling him to lose weight just pissed him off and made him eat even more.
Not to mention, but this guy's entire life revolves around food, and it's his livelihood. Might be the death of him, but what else is he gonna do? Get a job at Starbucks?
