I think John gets such a boost over the way Seth laughs at his jokes, you can totally see it in his face. I don’t think many other people make him feel that way. He looks like he’s one a contest each time Seth laughs harder

TVclipName it’s self-deprecating humor. A lot of new parents will play Mozart for their young or in utero children in hopes that the kid will grow up to be a creative genius like Mozart. In the movie Amadeus, F Murray Abraham portrays Salieri as a jealous mediocre composer who obsesses over his friendly rival Mozart who is younger, talented, and successful.

I do need to clarify, there is little evidence for the rivalry, most accounts suggest they had a professional relationship. I also think Salieri is severely underrated and he was an amazing teacher too! His students include Schubert, Liszt and Beethoven!

    • Mijacogeo

Purely K - Also, aside from it being a reference to Salieri and his rivalry with Mozart, it's a pun on the word "play." Abraham performed as Salieri in Amadeus; Mulaney's parents put Salieri's music on so that he could hear it in the womb.
Even if you don't get the reference, the pun is enough of a joke on its own.
