thank you for the useful and interesting information. It does seem intuitive that the information for entering a state of hibernation would be genetically encoded and would be conserved among different clades of mammals. Because we have so much genetic similarity to fat tailed lemurs, despite being so different in terms of phenotype, suggests that the difference in phenotype is determined largely by the way the genetic material is regulated. In a word: epigenetics. Genes are turned on or off depending on environmental stimuli. It's about hacking the genetic potential that is already there. Once we find out how to turn on the functions that are encoded in our genomes we truly could become more than human.

What about using hibernation more for people that don't need to worry about as many blood clots because of cybernetic replacements. You just replace several body parts with mechanical body parts that don't rely on biological necessities like blood, muscles, or bones.

$100,000 TO BE PUT INTO HYBERNATION FOR 30 DAYS. Human hibernation would be a massive scientific, even medical breakthrough. If it does become possible someday, they will need to find some "human guini pig" volunteers to experiment it on. And of course, to entice people to subject themselves to a questionable experiment, they would need to be offered attractive compensation.
So, WHAT IF scientists do find a way someday? Would YOU volunteer to be put into hibernation for a month if offered $100,000? Me, I think I would. The money would pay off just about everything, and I'd be part of a huge scientific breakthrough.

Olivia is getting better at this. I absorbed a fair amount of the content in one sitting, quite enjoyed the video. Maybe chill on the hand movement a little as it's a tiny bit distracting, otherwise good work. Also pace your speech a little - think James T Kirk, and how he makes mundane things intriguing with pacing and spacing :)

Hydrogen sulfide and it's analogs aren't the only triggers for hibernation being researched, there's also an opiate and a peptide being investigated plus simply reducing the core body temperature is a trigger.

I liked how the video presented some super awesome [and totally random :)] facts like about the arctic ground squirrel, yet at the same time also discussed some real-life, ACTUAL benefits of hibernation for humans like being able to reduce car crash fatalities. New random facts to keep me entertained, and practical knowledge to give the video some definite purpose. Perfect!

Maybe we could solve the long term hibernation problems by not doing it,imo it would be a better idea to hibernate for 8 hours or so,than wake up,do a bit of exercise and stretching, than going back to hibernation.
Sure it wouldnt be as effective and resurce saving like hibernating for months at a time, but it would still help a lot.

SciShow is losing some respect form me.
97% of our genes are shared with a lemur?
That is a ridiculous statement and VERY misleading.
Like, we share 50% DNA with Bananas but that doesn't mean anything in THIS context, we are not going to turn into one or behave like one any time soon.
Black and White people are MORE than 99% similar, but people will still kill about the fact that they are DIFFERENT.
