Here’s why the Apple CUBE Computer was a Beautiful $2,800 FAILURE

  • Published on Apr 19, 2019
  • Apple's infamous G4 Cube computer was beautiful but ultimately flawed. In this video I show its many quirks and why it quickly died at retail.

That pro keyboard was far and away one of the best Apple produced for years, namely because the function keys were spaced out. At that time I was doing a ton of production work & had a dozen hot keys set up in my apps, and I was able to work lightning fast since I could hit those keys without looking for them. ⌨️👍

Why the hell won’t Apple design the Mac Mini to be this easily accessible? Sure, it’d make the housing larger but I’m sure their target market would prefer that by a wide margin.

I never understand why people have to try and show us how great something sounds, I mean we always hear it in the quality of our device, not the one shown... this doesnt make any sense of whatsoever.

To me the speakers, mouse, keyboard look after-market like something you'd find at a discount store. I wouldn't doubt that the cost of manufacturing could have been about the same.

I feel sorry for everyone that got sucked into the Apple products. Apples innovation in the industry is unparalleled. But, they are insanely overpriced and don't let you upgrade. They force you to by other Apple products so you can actually have compatibility. Sure the products look good, but I bet I could build an equally ascetically pleasing PC with equal or better performance for less than half the cost.

Great video. I work as an animator and I remember this machine crashing all the time due to over heating. So the design was fantastic, but at the expense of function. But that is something that Apple have been really good at. Their later aluminum laptops would do the same thing, but actually fry the motherboard.

If you put a Linux distro on there, you can make it still look like a macOS, plus it will work with a lot of current software. The ram limit will be a problem for some programs, like Firefox. But Chromium web browser would work fine, since it is used on Raspbian.

6:40 ...And 1000 bucks in 2000 is almost 1500 in today's money, with the 1800 price tag for the base unit going for what would be well over 2600 right now. Computer+Monitor would cost you 4100$ with inflation factored in. And that was not by any means specially expensive compared to some 90's Apple models. So, yes, Apple was even more expensive then than it is today, only up to the early to mid nineties PC's weren't that cheap either (although they were certainly cheaper) so Apple could get away with it somehow. By 2000, though, asking that amount for the product, however cool, was definitely crazy.

Im gonna tell you why it was a tremendous failure: remember that NeXT cube failure in the 90s? well, the egomaniac jobs did it again when he returned to apple (you know, that RDF tactic he used with coworkers) but, again, the public didnt buy that cube 2.0 crap; as usual with apple products it was an underpowered overpriced "concept design" that belongs in a museum rather than in a desktop as a proficient computer

6 USB ports? Given that 1 port must be used to gain the 2 on the keyboard, that would leave only 5 actual ports. But, since a mouse is required, you actually have only 4 ports. 1 on KB, 1 wherever you plug in the KB, and 2 on the other location.
The mouse is not buttonless. The button is the entire upper case. But it's only 1 button.
Shame about the Apply logo all over that stuff (and the lack of a second button), does look nice.

You didn't mention the fact that they had production issues and most of the cubes developed little hairline cracks in each corner bend. One of the major factors for why they stopped making them. Form over function failed them pretty hard in this generation.
