A Machete Martial Arts Master Shares His Secrets | Short Film Showcase

  • In Haiti, the machete is both a weapon and a farmer’s key to survival. This dichotomy is especially true for Alfred Avril, a master machete fencer and subsistence farmer. The traditional art of machete fencing can be traced back to the Haitian Revolution. With fewer guns than the soldiers they were battling, many slaves fought with the machetes they had used to toil the sugarcane fields. In this short film from Third Horizon, Avril shares his mysterious craft as well as the practical and spiritual value of the machete throughout Haitian history.

10:00 : the secret of his fighting "technique" is to grab his balls. But hey, "the spirit came down" on him and told him all he needed to know.
People lived better in medieval times than in "his" country. Hilarious.

its interesting, what he was using was a very basic one, which makes sense as the slaves fought with tools, not expensive ken onion blades. a machete is different than a sword given its balancing, really good for chopping, bad for thrusts, so it would be analogous to a falcion or an axe.which is why i was so interested in this.

Also the first natives that made it to South America actually recall they're being peoples of African descent there and they DNA tested some of the native people far south of the continent and they had African markers so...Europeans and Africans can make a claim that they're also natives of the Americas

But then the Haitians also had to fight the Spanish and British troops off before they could even face the French right after.

This looks like a bunch of bull he tells people so he could get drink money because that form of fencing is just wasted motion. You go for the hand or whatever they stick out . If you get as close as they where you disarm them because if you play around someone always gets cut you see so my opinion is this is fake used to get money from the tourist then they laugh all drunk at night

I owe part of that to Professor Pierrier Renne . He doesn't know I am shouting him out. However I am a badasss I will create generation of hethens from my skills. So my history will be buried with me because many has failed to recognize my legacy. Well that its blood has been replaced by ink. So I will continue to finish washing this doc.
