How to stay calm when you know you'll be stressed | Daniel Levitin

  • Published on Nov 23, 2015
  • You're not at your best when you're stressed. In fact, your brain has evolved over millennia to release cortisol in stressful situations, inhibiting rational, logical thinking but potentially helping you survive, say, being attacked by a lion. Neuroscientist Daniel Levitin thinks there's a way to avoid making critical mistakes in stressful situations, when your thinking becomes clouded - the pre-mortem. "We all are going to fail now and then," he says. "The idea is to think ahead to what those failures might be."

I read about this method in Dale Carnegie`s book "How to stop worrying and start living". It realy can help if you have some problem and worry about it. But it can`t help if you are stressed.

Just think if you bought a cool GPS system and you were so excited to start playing with it to make it do all it's full potential. You keep playing with it for hours and just get a few functions to work, but it won't show you where you are, won't show the time, and it won't show you directions. But it will play movies, video games, watch tv and even talk to you. What do you do? A. Throw it away B. Call a friend and complain and just leave it not used C. Return it and get a refund D. Just use the working functions and make the most of it
    E. Read, the manufacturers manual.
I am sure Reading is the last option that comes to mind, but this is what "free will" is, God has given us free will to decide to choose Him, to return to Him and fulfill our purpose in life, which is to Worship Him, as the bible says Matthew @ "No man can serve two masters: for either he. will hate the one, and love the other; or else. he will hold to the one, and despise the other, Ye cannot serve God and mammon." You may ask what is mammon, according to the New Testament of the Bible is commonly thought to mean money, material wealth, or any entity that promises wealth, and is associated with the greedy pursuit of gain.
Holy Quran Allah Almighty says that: “Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.” (Quran @)
Holy Quran, Almighty Allah says: “Satan’s plan is to incite enmity and hatred among you with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and regular prayer. Will you not then abstain?” (Quran, 5:91)
Holy Quran Allah says: “Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose) and that you would not be brought back to Us?” (Quran @5)
In the Holy Quran Allah says, “I have not created men except that they should serve Me” (Quran, @).
Holy Quran Allah says: They say: "Allah hath begotten a son" :Glory be to Him.-Nay, to Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth: everything renders worship to Him. (Quran, @6)
Just look how God has placed an order in the creation and that they are obeying him and doing what they were created to do. Many people feel a void or a whole in their life because they are not giving credit to were credit is due. You may ask how, how do I worship Him in a way that I still keep my day job, or still do what I love, or maybe you have not found what you are good at or your passion. That is okay, you may be a part in a bigger recipe, or you may be like the yeast in bread, just be patient you will rise. :) But first you need to see what skills do I have. God is the best story teller, just look at the beautiful awesome story of Yusuf in the Holy Quran: Chapter 12 ( I like the English translation of Yusuf Ali ) this story shows you that Yusuf or (Joseph in the Bible) had to be very patient to fulfill his true purpose in life, but he May Allah be pleased with him kept his faith and obeyed Allah all the way and never gave up hope. I love this story so much. There is a funny part that is part of historical writings is that when the wife of his master was going after Yusuf she locked the doors and there were alot of doors he was deep in the house, and by her bed she had an idol of her god and she took a scarf and wrapped it around the eyes of the idol, so he would not witness what was about to go down. :) Thank Allah, Allah saved Yusuf from that trial.
Don't get impatient with your plan for yourself, just think you didn't create yourself. So just get real quiet, I know anxiety is real and it is very difficult to calm down. It would be nice if you know how to swim - float on your back looking up at the sky, you have to focus on your breathing and get really calm to float. If this is too much or not in your reach, then try a yoga class or a Tai Chi class. If this is still out of your reach, take a full bath, brush your teeth, make sure to clean your ears ( right side first then left) This is not a joke, this is called a Ghusl bath - like Jesus would wash before praying, Muslims still wash before praying. Then find a clean quiet place in your home with no images around and no dogs around the area you bow your head down, and ask God sincerely, and talk to him with the sweetest words you can use, and thank Him for guiding you to even ask Him. Ask Him to Guide you to your purpose in Life ask Him to bless you to work and live a Life that is Pleasing to Him, and He will bless and guide you. This is not only a Muslim practice. Look at George Washington Carver, he was not a Muslim but he definitely knew who was in charge and who to ask. I am sure you know George Washington Carver made peanut butter, But that was not it, God blessed him in scientific research to discover over 300 uses of the peanut. He was a humble man and this is his words of how he asked God:
Years ago I went into my laboratory and said, “Dear Mr. Creator, please tell me what the universe was made for?”
The Great Creator answered, “You want to know too much for that little mind of yours. Ask for something more your size, little man.”
Then I asked, “Please, Mr. Creator, tell me what man is made for.”
Again the Great Creator replied, “You are still asking too much. Cut down on the extent and improve the intent.”
So then I asked, “Please Mr. Creator, will you tell me why the peanut was made?”
“That’s better, but even then it’s infinite. What do you want to know about the peanut?”
“Mr. Creator, can I make milk out of the peanut?”
“What kind of milk do you want? Good Jersey milk or just plain boarding house milk?
    “Good Jersey milk.”
And then the Great Creator taught me to take the peanut apart and put it together again. And out of that process have come forth all these products.

I think that this video wasn't bad like how comments say because he says that in order to stay calm during a stressful situation is to think way ahead before it happened and that is true because the best way to be calm in a stressful situation is by avoiding it or being prepared for it from the first place *Sun Tzu style*
