Oh my God I hate this new Era on TVclip comment section. Like those me: saying shit versus Linus: saying shit are funny. Oh hell no, I fucking hate it, just because people just quote the video. Not actually make it humouristic or funny in any kind. Plus those lazy ass comments takes up to 80% of all comments, so yeah, TVclip is dead. All because of millennials..

So I am in a bit of confusion here, at the start of the video I thought they were using GPU rendering and were going to change a GTX 980 to RTX???? but after the build was done they were complaining about not speeding up and having the CPU maxed out which sounds like CPU rendering. If they are doing GPU transcoding, I hear that the Quadro P2000 is the sweet spot for the most trans-codes at a time for the money. The gaming GPU's are restricted to two trans-codes at a time. I hope they do another video, and clear up which type of rendering they were trying to improve. I would think that the final transcode would be GPU, and all the video work would be CPU rendering. For my DVD transcoding I use Xmedia Recode, my bad eye's can't tell the difference from GPU or CPU coding.

And how would a 3900X fared for this workload? I know it would be using a bit less power than anything you have running.

Out of curiosity, would upgrading the workspace drives to nvme 3.0 x4 help with your render times? Seems to me that continuous read of your enormous input files might be a potential bottleneck... or I’m completely wrong.

As for spilling water on unpowered electronics:
    - It's a pretty lame excuse for not doing it right. :-p
    - Due to soft power switches and various low power states, the only safe "unpowered" is unplugged.
    - And capacitors should have been allowed to drain.
    - Not sure if even the CMOS battery can ruin your day.

Isn't it a downgrade? X99 to Z390? it means to ram channels less... Why not X299 or X399 platform? I thought more cores were better for this kind of workload...

I'm with Linus here. XMP forces my memory to run in single-channel, no matter how I put the sticks in. So it's either 1333MHz dual-channel or 1600MHz single-channel. I'd rather have XMP off then.

  • Ivan Maglica
    Ivan Maglica 25 days ago

It is a memory issue, you are not using all N.U.M.A. channels, so half of cores are literally asking for access to memory from cores that are directly linked to memory channel. We had this issue with dual amd epic rendering server until we populated all memory slots (adding up to excessive 128GB of ram).

while you're seeing gains on a single workload by keeping core count low and clocks high, would you not get better overall performance (if there is ever a need) by running concurrent renders from multiple editors? There must be a better software solution than adobe and windows for standalone renders.

Do another video as a "test" with the newer AMD and Ram at their new clock potentials. Also... swap out the 980? I believe you should be able to trim down a few more seconds with a slightly newer GPU. And if it's compute you need. Try an AMD GPU with compute on and off and lets see the difference there also!! Cmon linus!! DO IT!!!

  • MajorWallopy
    MajorWallopy 28 days ago +1

With all your water spills you think you'd remove the line that is higher first.. not lower, to reduce the amount of water to spill out. I mean it's just physics.
