Joshua Harris Announces Divorce: Major Misinformation & Assumptions

  • Published on Jul 20, 2019
  • Check out my latest vid with the updates on this situation:
Purity and Courtship advocate and previous pastor Joshua Harris has announced his split from his wife. There are a lot of people making assumptions about why, and blaming the reason on his recent acknowledgement of the shortcomings in his book "I kissed dating goodbye" I think this is unfair and we simply don't have enough information to back up such a theory. Harris' wife has come out as an exvangelical and has publicly shared her journey away from conservative Christianity. I think this shift has far more to do with the changes that led to their separation.

actually if you do bibical research I kissed dating good bye is solid bibical truth. you just don't want that so your not open to the truth only the truth as you see it. dating is practicing divorce. you do not need to date and my kids have not and married in courting and its amazing. I will never let any of my kids date unless they are 18 out of the house and decide too but so far they follow what I have tought them cause I do it biblically

I think your analysis is right on. If she’s going thru some major realizations about being indoctrinated as a child then it definitely wouldn’t make for a happy home life with a man who still promotes the very ideas she rejects. At this point, then staying together would be a career saving decision for him and she probably said No. He now rejects his books because he probably blames himself for his failed marriage for not better qualifying his young wife. Who knows.

And this is why people shouldn't chime in on things without knowing what's actually happening. Turns out, Shannon still maintains a christian faith and Josh has renounced christianity completely. There is no point to this video except to prove that this person, who calls themself a christian while mocking Shannon and gossiping about the Harris' lives, knows absolutely nothing about the situation. You just spent all this time saying the same three things over and over with an incredibly arrogant and graceless tone, and are right about absolutely none of it. Why is this video even still up?

Both of them (not just Josh) are wayward, and both of them are indeed apostate. While I am still trying to wrap my head around it, I am praying that God numbers both of them Elect since the Elect, unlike the Reprobate, will return from their apostasy to Christ.

You New to do your homework
Josh Harris, author of best-selling relationship guide ‘I Kissed Dating Goodbye’, announces divorce
    JULY 31, 2019 9:56PM
During a messy relationship breakdown or divorce, most people have a pre-nup to settle disputes. But there's many things that people don't include...
A best-selling relationship author, who described dating as the “training ground to divorce” when he was 21, has announced his divorce from his wife.
Joshua Harris, a former mega-church pastor and author of I Kissed Dating Goodbye, announced on Instagram earlier this month that he and his wife were separating after 22 years of marriage.
“We’re writing to share the news that we are separating and will continue our life together as friends,” he wrote.
“In recent years, some significant changes have taken place in both of us. It is with sincere love for one another and understanding of our unique story as a couple that we are moving forward with this decision. We hope to create a generous and supportive future for each other and for our three amazing children in the years ahead. Thank you for your understanding and for respecting our privacy during a difficult time.”

The book, published in 1997, was dubbed a huge success after it sold close to one million copies and was widely adopted and used by young Christian evangelicals.
It argued young Christians should avoid dating completely, should not hold hands or kiss or spend time alone together before they were married. He also argued being single should not be seen as a burden or characterised by “selfishness”.
Harris apologised for the book in 2018 and said he had reconsidered his view that dating should be avoided, apologising to anyone whose lives had been impacted.
He also asked the book’s publisher to stop selling it.
Harris began to distance himself from the book less than 10 years after its release, giving a sermon at the church he was pastor of in 2005 called “Courtship, Schmourtship: What really matters in relationships”.
The book 'I Kissed Dating Goodbye' was written by Harris when he was 21. Source: Supplied
Harris also admitted on Instagram that he was moving away from his Christianity after his divorce.
In a follow-up post after his divorce announcement, Harris said he had “undergone a massive shift in regard to my faith in Jesus”.
“The popular phrase for this is ‘deconstruction’, the biblical phrase is ‘falling away’,” he wrote.
“By all the measurements that I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian. Many people tell me that there is a different way to practise faith and I want to remain open to this, but I’m not there now.
“Martin Luther said that the entire life of believers should be repentance. There’s beauty in that sentiment regardless of your view of God.
“I have lived in repentance for the past several years - repenting of my self-righteousness, my fear-based approach to life, the teaching of my books, my views of women in the church, and my approach to parenting to name a few.
“But I specifically want to add to this list now: To the LGBTQ+ community, I want to say that I am sorry for the views that I taught in my books and as a pastor regarding sexuality.
“I regret standing against marriage equality, for not affirming you and your place in the church, and for any ways that my writing and speaking contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry. I hope you can forgive me.”
Despite no longer being Christian, Harris said he would not join his Christian friends “in mourning”.
“Don’t take it personally if I don’t immediately return calls … I don’t view this moment negatively. I feel very much alive, and awake, and surprisingly hopeful,” he wrote.

They both strayed, clearly. Joshua left from being a pastor to go to a secular college. first mistake. From there he embraced evolution (probably from his secular college education) and if you watch his TED talk, he basically based his whole transformation process on evolution. His poor parents. He and his wife were never really Christian, they are known as "almost Christian", which can be swayed easily. Not built on rock but on sand. Any 21 yr old should not be considered an authority on relationships, BTW. Christian or not.

Not sure about seminaries, but I have heard (haven't looked into it, just something I stumbled upon long ago) that for a "Christian" college to be considered "accredited" they are required to teach evolution.

@Kassie West I looked up his original book on Amazon and reading the reviews, many years back people were beginning to question him and one of the reviewers stated that he was involved in several sex scandals and had to step down from the church. Google Josh Harris Sex Scandals. That was why he left? As for college, what seminary teaches evolution? He refers to evolution as his whole basis of "transformation" in his TED talk. I have a feeling it was not his parents but influences around him. I read the first few pages of his original book on Amazon.

    • Kassie West
      Kassie West  5 months ago

I thought his return to college was for seminary? I don't know that his studies were "secular" I think they were teaching super liberal christian theology. I def agree with you that he and his wife were never christian, I made a update video as to why. if you want to check that out. I dunno his parents might not be so innocent. They are probably part of the problem as to why his faith was more superficial and virtue signaling vs real and sincere. That kind of stuff is generally taught by those around us.

Is there anything more sad than to see someone fall away from Christ! Where will you go? To this corrupt, dying world? To the devil? To your former way of sinful life? Where can someone go from Christ? He's where all our questions are answered! If these people have truly turned away from Christ, I guarantee you they never were in Christ to begin with. Because nothing, and I mean nothing, can separate the true Child of God from the love of God in Christ!!

Well we know by now that Joshua turned away from his biblical believes as well. He himself says, that he is not a christian anymore. He had his part in this divorce, not only her! I really hate it how you blame the woman for everything! Cause that's what you do in this video! That's what Christian women often do... Just blame other women... What's going on with you? Are you just jealouse? Do you think Joshua Harris should have married you instead? Come down from your high horse. Ask yourself, if Jesus himself would have posted such a hateful video against Shannon. Throw the first stone on her if you think you have any right to do that

First, dating isn't bad, it's by definition to intimately (nonsexual) get to know someone and things about him or her that isn't normally shared or known with the associates of the person. We all have dated but may have redefined it through other cultural influences and thus lost in translation in what it means to have a good quality relationship (courtship).
I believe we need to go back to the basics of a relationship in all aspects of life. Parental, employer, friendship, family, business, spiritual, etc.. You name it. Harris also needs to do the same.

I don't know Josh but I do know that for a Christian the relationship with Christ must be more important than the relationship with a spouse. I think he was too focused on finding someone in his early adulthood that he neglected seeking to know God intimately. What he should have done first was make sure he was a true believer (elect) according to 2 Peter 1:10 and then not worry about his physical needs but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Yes you could seek after those physical things and obtain them like the world does but at what expense?

    • ThatClassic70sGirl
      ThatClassic70sGirl 5 months ago

Good point. Only the "physical" is not a "need" (food, water, clothing, shelter, and the Word of God are needs); but a drive. A drive is in need of a steering wheel.

when there's turmoil in a preacher's home, it's a real, real, real storm for the preacher. Many people look to you. You have publicly told hundreds if not thousands of people how to live. Week after week, month after month, year after year... telling others to trust God, and yet, God seems to have let the preacher down. Then the folk you ministered to, turn arrows toward you. It's very, very, very difficult. You lose your so-called friends. You're kids get twisted up. It's a mess. Been there. Still not 100% and my divorce is now the same number of years I was married. It just about knocks you out. I understand being at the place where you say to yourself "what's the use". After prayers, fasting, meditation, prayer closet, paid counseling, honest dialogue with spouse, reaching out to friends who more shun you than help you.... It takes two to work things out. When it doesn't work out, you wonder where you dropped the ball... you wonder why God didn't pick up the ball and keep things together. I know, I know: Wait On The Lord. Wait as life passes you by. Too bad for this young man. God, have mercy.

Kev,. I pray that you are healing a little every day from these hard experiences. Just because we go through horrific trials does not mean that we lose our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Finding what He has for us after these experiences is a bit rough and not easy since so much has changed in our lives. My faith in my Saviour is as sweet as it ever has been and staying in The Word and prayer is so very important. Through His love we can move on to other ways of service and living.
