- Willem Dafoe is having an amazing run in an amazing career. The latest example is The Lighthouse, a two-hander in black & white with Rob Pattinson. He sat down with David Poland to discuss the film and why it was a great fit with how he likes to work.

You NEED to interview Eggers! The few times he actually gets interviewed by anyone with some merit his answers are spectacular and I think this format would really fit him.
I haven't said it in a good long while but this channel is spectacular and I hope it keeps going for many years to come :)
This roll will go down in history as one of the greatest performances ever.
Please give him Nomination for an Oscar for this role! he was absolutely incredible.
This interviewer was okay except that he kept begging the questions on "how do you act". Yes, the process actors go through to build their character is interesting, but try not to be so completely naive in your questions.
Edit:Meh interviewer is a noob the longer this went on.

You do such a wonderful job with these interviews. I often wonder how on earth you begin a conversation with an unknown person whom you probably respect but you always successfully extract interesting information from your subjects.
This man is a consummate artist. He is like a jazz musician who studies his craft and the music then goes on the stage with his horn and let's the music and the moment tell him what to play. It's orchestrated and spontaneous at the same time. He was iconic in the movie.
He seems like such a down to earth, go-with-the-flow kinda guy. Ive always loved his work since i saw him in spiderman when i was a kid
Pulling out a scene from the movie and trying to make Defoe do part of it feels so disrespectful to me.
This interviewer was weird.
What a jerk the interviewer is!
I don't know how Willem manages to be so charming and warm while being so creepy at the same time. He's so great.
I can't honestly say I've seen anything like this movie. It is a breath of fresh air! Can't wait to see more from Robert Eggers!
He is without a doubt one of the most informative, articulate actors I've ever heard. I love him! His tenor, motives, and being for acting is just right in every way.
I'm so happy for Willem...he's finally getting his dues...Hopefully this is the one for him...Should start a campaign for him like Leo...
Smells like a few Oscars
There was a FIREFIIIIIGHT!
The fact that Mr. Dafoe has not, yet, received an Oscar is an Absolute Tragedy! This guy is a class act!
Such an awesome guy! Excellent interview with great questions.
The farts alone made this oscar worthy
I love listening to Dafoe speak. The interviewer is nice.
Still a fun time
Bad Audio bro
lets hear ur audio m8
asshole
I love Willem Dafoe. He is a great actor who genuinely loves his craft and has a genuine interest in the characters he plays. And he is also a humble and a wonderful person.
What a great guy.
Willem has the patience of a saint. Glad that this interviewer was asking tough questions.
Yeah, tough questions like "what do you want to overhear audiences saying after the film" and "do you know all the sea shanties now?"
You and the interviewer are equally retarded.
Love that he balked at the use of the term “safe space!”
hey man your interviews are genuinely such an amazing and valuable resource for the kinds of movies that matter, at least as far as movies go. just wanted to voice that appreciation.
"YOU WERE FOND OF ME LOBSTER! SAY IT!!" He deserves the oscar for supporting role.
Alright, have it cher'way.
Willem is one of the most honest actors I've ever seen. Every thought and movement is completely absent of pretense. That's what makes him one of the greatest. Lying doesn't make you a great actor; the ability to honestly tap into and relate to the feelings of a character and all their experiences is what makes a great actor.

LEGEND.
“Bobby Peru don’t come up for air!!” Love Willem Defoe! Great interview!
How long have ye been on this rock
Dude fucking killed it in The Lighthouse. Fantastic actor. Would like to see him and Robert Pattinson do another film together.
Wow, you can tell he is just in love with the art. He loves the worlds, loves the possibilities. Even after all he's done he continues to find the magic with projects like this..
A true patron of the art
"Why'd yer spill yer beans Willem?"
I think Dafoe was a manifestation in Pattinson's characters head possibly representing (without spoilers) a certain character from Pattinson's past
@Sepehr Khalili-Tari idk maybe it works. It just seemed like a strange line to represent the secret of the light. Willem yelling spill the beans with glowing eyes came off as hammy to me at the time.
@Ted Yes Ted "Help me to recollect"
Ted why strange? I’m curious
Ted how is that a strange line? it totally makes sense within the context of the movie
Willem Dafoe is a national treasure
Stopped the video not even halfway through just to say I FUCKING LOVE YOU WILLEM.
Excellent interview as usual. You always manage to get actors' candid personalities in a way I haven't seen other interviewers do very well. This is the kind of archival footage people will look back on to get a better idea of who these actors were.
Just saw the film. Very original and interesting. Kind of reminds me of The Shining.
Scottie Turner the running scene had to be inspired
it's the axe!
The great Willem Dafoe.Love from Greece.😀😀😀
Brilliant actor masterclass here by Willem.
Willem is amazing to watch as an actor and more amazing in these natural interviews. No pompousness but very real, love to hear him describe his process, that's the only thing I need to know for his films. When there's a film I haven't seen of his, I seek out an interview relating to it and skip the trailer. He's a joy to watch. And extra special thanks for your incredible channel, thanks for long form thought provoking interviews, as always.
The acting was incredible in this film.
Dafoe is such an awesome actor. Hope he gets loads of nominations for The Lighthouse.
let the curse of Neptune strike the academy if he doesn't at least get a nomination
does this have any spoilers for the lighthouse?
no
No. And i think Willem and I both agree that there really are no such thing in this film... but a few theories are discussed... without prejudice.
Dear Sir I live for your interviews. I love them and adore the insights and wealth of knowledge in them. I am scared of your interviewing style but they are the closest thing to awesome. Can we please have more Jim Cameron (can't find his howard stern interview in 97 that is legal). Also Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Leo Dicaprio please.
A great actor and he comes across as a very nice, grounded chap. Can't wait to see this.
Great actor and such a wide range. To Live and Die In L.A is one of my favourite movies.
Always great to listen to Willem.
Would also love to suggest Lizzy Caplan for an interview considering she's having hell of a year (Castle Rock, Truth be Told, Das Boot)
@DP/30: The Oral History Of Hollywood Oh, its pity. Would really, really love to listen to her.
Thank you for replying and all the great work you do in general.
I think highly of Lizzie, but I don't get the feeling she really likes doing interviews. She almost snarked Seth Meyers the death the other night.
Great job, David! Willem seems super great.
Willem is right about why people are depressed
DP/30 with Willem Dafoe? Sign me in coach!
I'll see movie only in January of 2020 so I hope this will fix the itch.
La Bière De Buff movie was fucking brilliant , it’s a masterpiece I’m also about to watch parasite so I’ll tell you how that went
What a cool guy one of my favourite actors
I love this interviewer. He has a genuine interest in actors and what attracts them to roles. Actors seem very relaxed and happy to chat, zero pressure to sell their movie or give a soundbite. I always feel after having watched them that I understand a little better their viewpoints on their craft, the business and sometimes daily life. Kudos as always.
Also Willem is a charming, enthusiastic artist. I love his work and clearly he loves his roles.
Will you be doing interviews with Rob Eggers or Rob Pattinson for this movie?
@Cthulhu582 Eggers has actually spoken about how he's intentionally vague on providing detailed interpretations. Pattinson would ask him for insights about whether his character is "X, Y, or Z" and Eggers would tell him that it could be any one of them, providing he says the line "10% faster". He's very specific about what he keeps within his direction, but doesn't care to give anything that he doesn't provide in the writing or film.
@DP/30: The Oral History Of Hollywood eggers would honestly be great. maybe someone can finally pin him on, if not an interpretation, then at least a path towards one. or hell, even several interpretations
Only if they get more awards traction. That isn't why they weren't included at this junket. Time was not made for it.
