I took some user comments way to seriously and figured out what it would take to melt obsidian and sand cast it into a sword.

Cool experiment, and thank to share it, but did you try to learn from a master black-smit, metallurgist, they have knowledge of guys who tried what you did during ... Something like thousand year ...? No offense but, you spend a lot of material, energy, time, a lot of waste. With learning you will succeed better. But again, you tried and it's interesting. Bye

The bubbling was most likely from moisture in the mold. Since you went to a glass factory to do the annealing did you consider using their smelter to melt the obsidian in the first place? Casting glass itself is not unknown & they may have been able to give you a few useful pointers.

I don't think that is considered obsidian, because it is a composite, not just one element and there is a specific process these elements go through to become obsidian.

You don't have to add frickin' flux. Just find a way to make it ACTUAL LIQUID so that it will flow naturally instead of completely changing the composition.

  • Jacob Page
    Jacob Page 6 days ago

Dude, there's more flux than material there, and borax basically turns to glass when you heat it, so no shit you're winding up with glass instead of obsidian. Get a stronger and hotter furnace. They exist.

Hmm the topic of the video really interested me cause I couldn't see a possible way of reforming the obsidian into such a perfect shape as the one of a sword. I don't know if there is a process somewhere around the world (highly doubt it) but surely something went wrong cause you made something out of obsidian (which is not obsidian since you changed its mixture) and it was so fragile. Obsidian's toughness is pretty close to diamond's and that's why it was used as a tool or weapon material in the early ages of humanity. And last i think that if you ever try the whole procedure again you should try cooling the "obsidian" exactly the soonest possible as it comes out of the oven. You see obsidian gets the form of glass because the magma, that comes by the melted mantle of the earth, escapes inside chambers that have extremely lower temperatures. Otherwise if it was given even a very little more time to cool off it would form an actual rock with minerals and etc. So to make long story short try degrading the cooling time at the lowest possible an give us a feedback! Nice try btw!!

You're thinking too much like glass. While it is indeed a natural glass, it's not so before it is formed.
What you could try is making your own molten felsic material, pouring into a thin mold, and then trying to cool it as quickly as possible, as opposed to trying to slowly cool it in an annealing oven. I'd start with say CO2 fire extinguishers, as Mythbusters got a can of soda to "cold" in I think 3 seconds back in the day with the aid of a CO2 fire extinguisher. From there, you could try pouring liquid nitrogen on it... I would also suggest pouring BEFORE starting the rapid cooling process, as this would allow the molten material to take a shape before being introduced to the cooling process.
Sure, you wouldn't be using obsidian in a casting manner like say steel or aluminum, but you would indeed be casting what would become obsidian...

Lesson learned: A pure obsidian sword is worthless. But who says the entire thing must be obsidian? In Japanese sword making they use a variety of metals with different qualities to make their swords, Perhaps if layers of different materials were used with the obsidian on the surface would work?
