Tokyo Tourist Traps | Japan Travel Tips

  • Published on Feb 16, 2017
  • Here is a Japan travel guide on some of the tourist traps in Tokyo and some places you could avoid in Tokyo. I hope the japan travel tips and advice gives you a heads up before travelling to Japan and makes your trip a smoother one! :)
    Places mentioned in order:
    TOKYO TOWER
Option: Instead of paying to go up the tower, enjoy Tokyo Tower from the surroundings
    - Shiba Park (Shiba koen)
    - Zozoji Temple
or go up other places for free views of Tokyo
    - Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (in Shinjuku)
    - Carette Shiodome
    - Bunkyo Civic Center
    - Carrot Tower (in Sangenjaya)
    HARAJUKU TAKESHITADORI
Option: Check out the back streets, hidden paths and traditional places
    - Brahms Path
    - Harajuku Street (Back streets with vintage shops, second hand shops, hipster hangouts etc)
    - Tokyu Plaza Rooftop
    - Meiji Shrine
    - Yoyogi Park
    SKY TREE
Option: Look at sky tree from other view points and take a short 15 minute stroll to Asakusa
    - Solamachi 30th Floor
    - Asakusa
    GOLDEN GAI DRINKING ALLEY
Option: Instead of paying the high table charge, check out local Japanese yokocho (back alleys filled with tiny bars and restaurants)
    - Shibuya Nombei Yokocho
    - Shinjuku Omoide Yokocho
    - Ebisu Yokocho
    - Sangenjaya Chitai Yokocho
    - Yurakucho Sanchoku Inshokugai
Phewwww... that was a lot to write haha, if you read up to here - you are the BEST!! Leave me a comment with your favourite emoji!

Thank you so much for such a helpful video! My family and I are planning a trip to Tokyo next year and some of these places were on our list! I'm so glad we won't be disappointed by them, but what I really appreciate is your "instead of" suggestions! <3 Thank you!

There are loads of 100 Yen shops as well. Like Pound Shops in the UK. Filled with original earthenware, Chinese brushes, paints, trinkets etc. You can load up on tons of Japanese souvenirs really cheaply.

I went to the sky tree about 2 hours before closing and it was so calm and empty, It was def worth the money going all the way up, it was so beautiful even though it was dark you saw so far away. Also they had like music at the top and a really cool photograph booth! Besides that, when me and my boyfriend was in Tokyo we walked around all day long, we walked abot 10-14 hours a day and went to so many places and did soooo many activities. I really got to see the whole city. But since we walked so much we also saw many hidden streets and shrines and areas where not many tourists visit and it was great although my feet were bleading! I truly recomment Tokyo, it's my best trip so far!

The lady at the end did say she respects the fact that Japanese don't speak English! But she has a point though: for a developed country the level (or serious lack there of) of people's language skills is abominable!!! Not even ten basic words... Sad indeed!! (For your information: I am a EU citizen and speak 3,5 languages - of which Japanese is the 0,5!)

the video filmed in harajuku when ti was "crowded" looked like a weekday morning or before eveyrhing was open. Most cities look like that on weekdays.... on the weekend in harajuku its impossible without walking as if youre in a sardine can and if you try "swimming" up on the wrong side its even more impossible....
Tokyo disneylands lines only being 90-100 mins isnt that bad... If you go during a holiday weekend or Halloween week for example the lines can be 3-5 hours.
I liked going up tokyo tower because its about half he price of sky tree and i liked the sky tree mall better for shopping.
The cat cafes in ikebukuro are also pretty unfun. They were pure bred cats that were lazy and just wanted to go back into their glass rooms. They wouldnt even move for or bother eating treats.
Anyway, i agree with the rooftop starbucks in harajuku spot. When its really clear i think you can see Mt. Fuji.

I think it's really interesting that your ideas about Tokyo Tower so closely mirror mine about the Eiffel Tower. I find that paying so much for the view of Paris is just not worth it, especially when there are so many other places that are far less expensive, or even free, and have at least as good, if not better, view of the city.

Disney sea was horrible lol, when I was there I didn’t stay longer than two hours and that’s rare for me at a theme park. If you’re ever in Tokyo definitely check out maricar. They have different locations in Tokyo. You get to dress up as an animated character and drive go-karts throughout the city for a reasonable price. Only downside is you have to have an international drivers permit if you are from the states, but it’s cheap to get from like AAA or something, but having one is worth it especially if you travel a lot and want to rent cars in other countries

Good advice! I've been a tourist in Japan 6 times in the past 10yrs and have had some experience with these spots or new enough in advance to go to the Shinjuku government bldg instead of SkyTree. And I totally agree with your advice about Harajuku. Tourists are going to want to walk down Takeshita street but Harajuku is a lot more than just that one street so definitely explore. And Meiji Temple is must.

That's hilarious that the Americans would find clubbing in Tokyo overrated. I totally agree. I went to Harlem in Shibuya and it was that type of 'standing around with your crew' dumb shit. Osaka has a better club vibe, especially if you're into hip hop. Pure Osaka was lit.

Avoid walking too far past Mos burger along Chuo Dori in Akihabara.
There's a picture gallery with overpriced prints and the pictures aren't that good anyway.
There's alway friendly female touts who will keep persisting to get you into the store and speak very good English.
    Beware this trap.

Me reading TRAPS on the title makes me think, "Does Scam exist in Japan? Really?"

    • redfish337
      redfish337 3 months ago

Yes, scams exist. Just like all crime exists in Japan. So, while you don't really have to be actively on defense in Japan, you shouldn't be oblivious either.
The one most commonly mentioned to affect foreigners, has to do with the various clubs and bars and such in the red light districts. There is a strong organized crime presence in these areas, and as they are mostly non-violent, they are mostly tolerated by the police.
The scam is a simple strong arm... you enter a place, and they try to make you purchase more than you intended by coercion and perhaps some veiled threat of violence. Anecdotally, it's just coercion and you can just walk out, but even if that is the case it's an upcharge scam.
You should already have your guard up visiting such a district... and the recommendation is to not go into establishments you haven't researched in advance first. I'm sure other scams exist, but they aren't super common. You almost have to hunt them down, whereas in a lot of other countries 3 people have tried to scam you before you even get to the hotel, on top of the cabbie who has scammed you but you can't do anything about it because all tourists get scammed by all cabbies there.

Avoid sky tree. It's boring. Instead walk around the area. But it's a tourist trap even for Japanese outside Tokyo. I like your ideas about Tokyo. The small back streets are better. Shimokitazawa. I've lived here 30 years. Love Tokyo but not the crowds.
