A different way to think about technology in education: Greg Toppo at TEDxAshburn

  • When did Technology become a tool in our lives? A quick synopsis of technology as adopted throughout history.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Is it possible for the speaker to provide a reference to where he got these quotes from? It's a fascinating talk, but just needing to weigh up the validity of some of his excellent comments.

The quote in the beginning (paper...slate) seems to be made up - see quoteinvestigator.com/2012/04/21/students-bark/

Iv'e looked up numerous ted talks for my research paper and this was my favorite so far! He made a presentation that really kept me interested as a young viewer.

very interesting take! I was hoping for more in terms of a conclusion, how best to consider ed tech right now, lessons learned from past tech implementations. I hear his message as - we have always predicted that technology will be game-changing but it HASN'T changed the game, and tech will succeed if you leave control in teacher's hands (because they want to retain control). I would point to Will Richardson, Bruce Dixon, who point out that most schools are teaching the same stuff using new technology rather than asking the more fundamental question 'what should kids be learning, what skills do kids need in our world' and then applying modern technology to accomplish this. If technology is used primarily to standardize teaching or increase test scores, and no shift towards better learning environments or teaching kids how to become self evolving learners happens, ed tech won't help our children that much.
