George is smart but not politically, same with many people, I could take on George rr Martin in a debate about politics and win, yet if it was on something like history he’d destroy me. I think people should take all opinions with a grain of salt, do research by yourself and you’ll realise they’re doing more crime per person etc. George believes all people have good, which is true, yet he thinks Mexicans will be fine if no one is racist and they’re nice, no, they’ll rape and kill (some will) but 1 person could take the lives of 5 food people easily. George has no clue what he’s talking about.

Actually, i'm a little surprised by how deep anti-Trump hate is. By hearing his haters, you would be lead to believe he's gonna force all immigrants into camps, all women into kitchens, and wage war to the entire world.
Actually, he isn't doing any of these. He recently STARTED A WORLD CAMPAIGN FOR DE-PENALIZATION OF HOMOSEXUALITY. He made an agreement with Mexico for immigrants, made many agreements with other countries for trade, using duties as a lever. Oh, and he relaunched the economiy MASSIVELY by cutting the taxes, and unemployement is at its lowest ever.
People are actually hating him...WHAT FOR???

  • HE1NZ

Martin is a smart dude. He works closely with Democrat controlled areas of show business and understands that if he doesn't say all the right things they will blacklist him and won't print his books. Notice how he didn't say anything new, merely repeated required talking points. He probably doesn't care, but doesn't want to stop working and fail his fans, so he goes along with it.

    • Waldo Does Games
Waldo Does Games 4 months ago

@HE1NZ hm, interesting viewpoint. I found his inclusion of a dwarf as one of the most sympathetic characters (at least, for the first three books) to be fairly progressive, but I guess you can't really write based on the middle ages without it reflecting older ways.

    • HE1NZ
      HE1NZ 4 months ago

@Waldo Does Games Well, his novels are not pipe dreams about diversity and inclusivity. They are very conservative in that some people are stronger than others and all the power belongs to families, not classes or races. Trumps are in many ways resemble Lannisters too

As much as I disagree with George’s politics (being that they are borderline foolish and uninformed), he does have a right to express them. Its allowed, so calm down people on him expressing his opinions. That being said, you most certainly can rebuff his points as well. Just because he’s allowed to express his opinions doesn’t mean he is immune from criticism, as this interview clearly shows, his opinions are very flawed and in some cases hypocritical.
Side note: I am more on the belief that people, especially celebrities, should remain quiet about their beliefs. It just creates division within your fanbase. Like I said, he is certainly allowed to express his opinions and that is fine. Don’t put much weight into his beliefs. But it does tend to divide people. And the interviewer should also not ask about it, its irrelevant and likewise personal. Say the wrong thing, people will look badly upon you.

I'm a Trump supporter but I respect GRRM'S perspective and think he has a right to his opinion, even if it's something I don't agree with, and will continue to support him through being his patron as long as he puts out good stories, I don't see what his politics has anything to do with his storytelling. I imagine most Trump supporters would be on the same boat with me, and would have that kind of perspective on anyone.

    • Only Playsveigar
      Only Playsveigar 6 months ago

@Dave Gunner I just think he has a bias which is normal for anyone to have, and his political bias would be evident in his writing and, in this case, his rhetoric. They way he mentions how Hilary lost the general election by electoral vote and not by popular, and in essence by extending the same sentimental statement towards Bush's candidacy - while knowing that it's always been by electoral college and that there was a good reason behind the electoral college system, ellicites to me that he's not unhinged by not giving the full narriative of the argument between the right and the left, and instead giving his biased perspective on politics - feeding to the already tired demagoguing of people who voted Trump into power, painting with broad strokes about his electorate and associating him with ppl who lean on the far right of the spectrum.
This is by no means admonishing him as a person, just my critique on his perspective of the issue.
Although I think it was dishonest at least and I've seen the same thing from people like David Pakman. I hope in the future there are more people on the left who can argue in good faith their positions without having to slander people on the right. I hope the same happens for people on my side. Doesn't look like it'll ever go that route however.

    • Dave Gunner
      Dave Gunner 6 months ago

Only Playsveigar-well not all of them I’d imagine. But fair play for approaching it this way.
I respect George’s views though, he is a history buff so he can obviously see the errors in human nature and it’s past.

    • Raa16
      Raa16 2 months ago

@Muhammad Pope Yes there is a typical leftist, progressive, liberal. You can't say their is a typical right winger because they basically keep on shifting with the Overton window as more and more people are disowned and disenfranchised by the left.

You know I didn't think about it till I saw this interview. Season 5 of GOT, the season in which Jon Snow let in the Wildings/Free Folk from beyond the wall (to protect them from the Night King, White Walkers, and Army of the Dead) and was subsequently stabbed by Allister Thorne and several others was in 2015, and that was the year in which Syrians were emigrating to the US/Europe to escape the atrocities going on in their home country. That's probably just a coincidence, but the parallels are quite intriguing.

You can complain about the laugh, but that's roughly the right sound for a Mexican to make when they hear the suggestion that they're going to pay for our wall of dumb. O_O

Wow. I am very impressed that Martin said such wonderful things about politics. I totally agree with him. I am glad that finally someone says something about the Native Americans. They are the only ones who can make a reasonable claim against immigration. I voted for Hillary Clinton. I have just learned that my popular vote had won. I thought Trump duped a lot of Americans with his pathetic campaign speeches. Now I see that there are plenty of Americans smarter than that. It was just a hiccup in the system. Darn the electoral college hiccups! The American people are smarter than I gave them credit for before. I was a lot more than concerned during the election. I was paranoid. Interestingly Game of Thrones applies to the Trump Wall. The Night's Watch has a wall blocking Free Folk and White Walkers. The Free Folk take issue with it, because they lived on the land first, and they are unfairly blocked off. Mexico actually owned more land in the past. Then the United States stole in the Mexican American War. So the Mexicans are like the Free Folk. If anyone should determine immigration in that part of America, it should be the Mexicans. The only one that should have more say is the Native Americans. The two are mixed. Mexican people tend to be part Native American and part Spanish. At the issue is resolved at the end of the TV show. One good thing the white walkers did was punch a hole in the wall, which gives more freedom for Free Folk. In the end there is no more Night's Watch or White Walkers. There are just Free Folk left, so they can take over. Jon Snow is supposed to be exiled to the Night's Watch. However there is no more Night's Watch. So instead Jon just goes with his Free Folk buddies. He has totally gone native. I hope he gets another Free Folk girlfriend in the future.

I'm honestly shocked at his political views after this interview. After reading ASoIF I was convinced that G.R.R Martin was, like me, a fellow wall enthusiast. However, I am dreadfully disappointed after seeing this interview. Then again no one has asked him his views on a northern wall, I wonder if he'd be more receptive.
