The Green New Deal is an ambitious plan to fight the effects of climate change. It’s the only American plan that actually acknowledges the size of the impending crisis. And it contains some difficult truths that we might not want to hear.
Read the Green New Deal resolution here: ocasio-cortez.house.gov/sites/ocasio-cortez.house.gov/files/Resolution%20on%20a%20Green%20New%20Deal.pdf
For additional context I recommend this piece by Vox’s Umair Irfan on the United Nations climate report, where the world’s best climatologists tell us how urgent of a problem this is: www.vox.com/2018/10/8/17948832/climate-change-global-warming-un-ipcc-report
This piece from Vox’s David Roberts, shows that world leaders really aren’t taking this urgency seriously. www.vox.com/2016/10/4/13118594/2-degrees-no-more-fossil-fuels
Finally, you should read this explainer of the Green New Deal, followed by this story (in list form) by Hannah Northey:

If you want to read about the Green New Deal in the lens of the 2020 election, I recommend this piece explaining Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s proposal: www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2019/5/4/18527458/climate-change-jay-inslee-for-president-2020

Inslee has the most ambitious climate proposals; it is, as Vox's David Roberts writes, the Green New Deal translated into policy.

For more from the rest of the 2020 democratic field, check out the Vox policy guide: www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/4/23/18304657/vox-guide-2020-democratic-policy-primary#Climate%20change

There is a scientific consensus that renewables are not viable, and most scientists see solar panels as worse than fossil fuels for climate change.
I would be all for funneling money into something like ITER and reforestation though. China and India for example have achieved wonders simply by planting millions of trees completely offsetting their much worse greenhouse contributions.
You'd literally get a hundred percent or better return on your investment just putting the money into that, than you would by attacking traditional fuel sources.

2 problems with this video: 1st, they skipped over the part of the story where the green party wrote the green new deal about a decade ago including a part about paying for it partially through demilitarization, and they have run presidential candidates on the promise of a green new deal. Since this democratic version was written you can find it called the ecosocialist green new deal. 2nd, they claim the dems will certainly implement it in 2020 if they win power, which is just proaganda. Much of the dems are still opposed to the gnd because they are owned by the corporations the gnd would destroy. Only a few dems would actually move this forward, whereas every Green has promised to work toward the gnd since its conception.

Stop making fools out of yourselves and actually read up on some of the ideals you support before supporting it! The facts these people are stating are complete hogwash. Just googling for 10-15 mins will give you a much better picture. Actually go and see what the scientists said rather than a 5 sec clip from their speech.

Why does everyone pushing for this say it is not a bill...or legislation when the intent of this resolution is to get to a bill or legislation? The reason they want to pass a resolution first is to get people committed without having to provide details. The green new deal is the biggest joke I have ever seen. Even with unlimited funding there is no way the US, let alone the entire would will be 0 emissions by 2050. I am all for improving the world and developing better sources of renewable energy, but the goals and timeline suggested in the GND is laughable. Its so laughable I can't even take it seriously.

NET zero. Not just zero. Obviously we breathe out co2, so carbon sinks are very important. The govt. Could hire people to clean the oceans and restore the forests. It wouldnt be the first time since the original new deal did something similar during the dust bowl. Before that, our agricultural sector almost turned this country into a wasteland.

Juniyuni You do realize that most 100% renewable by 2050 published scientific studies evaluate the cost of transition between $12 and $25 trillion?
Here’s the thing those studies focus on electricity transitions and some include transportation conversion.
The GND includes a much much larger scope and 1/3 the timeframe for completion.
At $600 billion over 10 years that’s only $6 trillion, less than 1/2 the average of 100% renewable studies by 2050 focusing on electricity transitions.
Your argument is not effective solely based on math...

As a liberal I knew the Green New Deal is a waste of time. There is no way a conservative would agree to this, and what we need is a little cooperation. They package it in the most optimistic way in this video, but if you actually read it, the first part an inspiring call to action , the second part is a call to major socialism (which they sort of admit). Whomever wrote it wasted everyone's by using it to push a political agenda instead of what it should have been about.. the environment.
