The Pressure on Pokémon for Nintendo Switch to Release in 2018

  • Published on Feb 12, 2018
  • As more details emerge on upcoming games for the Nintendo Switch, it's beginning to seem like Pokémon may be the big release for 2018. While fans will be ready for the game whenever it comes out, may there have been pressure to get it out by this year's end?

Console game means console budget. Game freak isn’t an indie darling company. Pokemon is obviously a monster seller. They can hire whomever they need to fill out a team to create a more complex game. It was date listed like that to either keep it a sorta surprise or to match what’s his name said about a year or year plus at last e3. I’m confused why people are saying they’re worried. This isn’t a Xenoblade or a Kirby. They have enough equity to grab whatever firepower they need to hit whatever date they need.

I think that if it's announced, it will be announced at E3 and released sometime in maybe the first quarter of 2019, I say that because we haven't gotten any other information about it other than "It's coming" and that was almost a year ago and barely anything changed. I don't think Pokemon will be the big game of the year, at least not this year, that title belongs to Smash I think.

I hope they have more Gym Leaders in Pokemon Games for Nintendo Switch, so it should be more Gym Leaders this year. I can't wait until I beat Gym Leaders and win lots of League Badges as long as I want more Gym Leaders in more Pokemon Games for the eighth and final generation of Pokemon by the end of Pokemon this year. Pokemon will be the eighth and final generation until Pokemon will be no more, but I hope you enjoy those Pokemon Games with more Gyms, you hear? See you later.

  • Mango Mania
    Mango Mania 10 months ago

I really really hope they take their time with pokemon. I've finished every pokemon game since gen 4 excluding ultra sun and moon and I've had the least enjoyment with the 3ds games. I know it sounds like I'm hating newer games just to feel superior but I genuinely feel that the newer games have not been as good. The 3d models don't look good, the games run incredibly slowly on my 3ds and they haven't attempted to do anything new that was significant. I know sun and moon was supposed to be a big turn in terms of story and stuff but it was all in the name. Trials = gyms, it was really all the same stuff.
So anyway I hope people stop pressuring them for a 2018 release. I guess in a way I myself am putting pressure on them, since I'm expecting this to be completely different then the 3ds. But I'd hope for a company of their size they'd be able to pull that off. For me this next switch game is gonna decide whether I ever buy another pokemon game.

My worry is the same as other franchises that move to a new generation, that it will be a empty version, bareboned cause of visuals and such
I hope for improved customization, color wheel for skin color than present, more clothes, hats and winning/losing animation for online battles. Really just that would make me happy
We really only need new legendaries and the rest can be filled by old pokes depending on story explanation to why

You got a new game last year and the year before that and yet you go and ask for an infinitely better Gen 8 game for the first time in Switch in a 2 year development cycle. Why not wait another year for a better game, not to mention keeping another game for next year (Metroid wont do it on its own). Sheesh!!

I've mentioned this on a previous video and I know I'm in the minority here, but I'll go ahead and say what I want anyway (since everyone else is here too). I know most people want this game to be released in 100 years and be super squeaky clean, perfect. But this is Pokémon we are talking about. It's a beloved franchise and i doubt they would seriously make it as bad as people are scared of they "rush it" out this year. Even though this was going to originally be coming when the Switch first did. I'm a huge Pokémon fan. Since 96. I love it no matter how it turns out. There's not a single Pokémon game I don't like to be honest. So I really want it released this year and I hope they do. I'm sorry guys. And everyone is entitled to their opinion. And that's cool. You can tell me a million reasons why it would be better for this game to be released in 100 years (yeah obviously I'm exaggerating with this 100 year thing, but it feels that way tbh). I'm excited for this game no matter when it releases. I'd like it as soon as possible and I'm not a very patient person. I'm an honest person, and I'm being honest on the internet, which is a dangerous game here. But I don't care. I want this game out soon and I'm excited for it no matter how it turns out to be. I trust in Game Freak and i know they know what they're doing over there.

I don't think Pokemon should release this year. If it did come out this year i wouldnt complain but I think that since Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon came out just last November and Sun and Moon came out not even two whole years ago, I feel like a 2018 release would just lead to a trend of yearly mainline Pokemon game releases. And that's something i DO NOT want to see.

  • MAX
    MAX 11 months ago

Here's my biggest concern: Nowadays, there are nearly a thousand Pokemon. All of those Pokemon, plus the ones from the upcoming generation 8 all need to have brand new high-poly models. That's gonna take a lot of work! I feel that if the game is rushed, game freak will either have to go with a more simple art style or cut out Pokemon of previous generations, neither of which sound good to me.

    • MAX
      MAX 11 months ago

Because I know somebody will bring this up:
Yes, I'm aware that the 3DS Pokemon games had a model for every Pokemon. But that still doesn't say anything because those were on a handheld.
The switch is a CONSOLE. Much more is to be expected, and I'm concerned that the pressure may effect the game's quality.

I honestly hope that they don't take the same approach to this new title like they did with sun/moon. I like the "old" formula of the gyms and such. Just as long as the story is unique enough to be able to tell apart from the rest, and not just some copy-paste of a past game.

    • Imperial Darkness
Imperial Darkness 10 months ago +1

ReDitto true. I did feel that sun and moon had some good ideas but were executed poorly. I think if they spent more time on fleshing out the ideas instead of creating a new engine that makes the games prettier then sun and moon could of been much better. This is something I have noticed, every time they make a new game engine after gen 3, the first games made with the engine are always lacklustre or slow. Diamond and pearl were ridiculously slow, x and y had a rushed story and lacked things to do after the story. Sun and moon were not only slow and laggy in certain battles, it suffered the same problems x and y had where it was lacking In things to do outside of the story.

Well don't worry my dude. More than likely they have been maybe this game for years, also this might not be the biggest YET. I bet it's just going to be a bigger Sun and Moon. This seems most likely, also I feel if we want the HUGE Pokemon adventure we gonna have to wait a few years. Also this could be a Diamond Pearl remake, which is in my opinion a great choice and a small start for the Switch. I sure this game was in development for 4 years along side Sun and Moon. Time will tell.

*I finally have somewhere to make a comment that will be recognised.*
Thing is, once I finished Pokemon Moon (I Pre Ordered the game) I kinda left the Overall Hype of Pokemon. I did get Pokemon Sun but I never finished it. And a year later I picked up Pokemon Ultra Moon, however it doesn't feel like there's any Massive Change to the First Gen 7 Game. Therefore, I've not been in the Pokemon Fanbase for ages.
However, I've been looking forward to returning to Pokemon. I'm still a Massive Pokemon Fan (Since Gen 4). However I've never got into the Competitive Scene I play the Story and the Post Story and then I'm kind of done (Apart from Wonder Trade and Breeding/Pokedex)
Is anyone in the same position with Gen 7?? I still Class myself as a fan. But I'm the kind of person who feels odd for not constantly staying with the fanbase??

I finished Sun, then after I got Ultra Sun, played half way through and got bored. I felt USUM was the same but with minor differences as of SM. I’m hoping the Pokémon Switch will get me hooked, I’ve been a fan for 18 years, and I don’t want to be ready to drop the franchise.

This was a really cool video, but it makes me wonder, what about the pressure Fire Emblem faces. I mean, it is now a big enough franchise that it won't crash or come close again. But I think that this could be Fire Emblems true time to shine. After the very successful phone game and the somewhat successful remake of one of the series oldest games, as well as awakening and fates, the fan base has gone significantly. But I still don't think It has as much popularity as it deserves. My worry with FE on the switch is that that game will just be another fire emblem game. I truly do think that Fire Emblem 16 will be great, but it has the possibility and ability to be so much more and bring it out from being one of Nintendo's "smaller" (not really) franchises and bring it on the levels of Zelda and Mario.

But i bet they're aware no matter how good the spinoff is, people will be left disappointed. (Metroid Federations, anyone?) Absence of evidence don't disprove the existence of said evidence, Pokemon works on a different time plane and Nintendo while to owns the Pokemon company they don't control said company, the Pokemon company enlists help from Nintendo and delaying a game as shallow as Sun and moon 2.0 on switch will further aggravate the Pokemon fans whom will have waited 2 years since e3 2019 for a game that's lackluster
Pokemon games are pretty solid gameplay wise and most glitches are caused by Gening new Pokemon.(hacks)
However Pokemon Diamond and pearl are without a doubt games that were not good entries and it was released 2 years after the DS launch.
It's imperative that Pokemon company have competence to deliver a good game on switch, make no mistake, Smash is not ready for a 2018 release and Pokemon's absence means that Nintendo cannot reach the estimated 20m switch by March 2019.
Better Pokemon is released this year and not send Nintendo into rushing Smash 5.

I am so fucking worried about this, I can already feel the game with good graphic and absolutely NOTHING ELSE.
They said they wanted to shake up things a little a play a bit closer to the quality of BOTW and SMO, i highly doubt you can do that in one year, especially when they rarely produce high quality title.

I think the best option would be to port diamond and pearl to switch to squeeze out more time for the new pokemon
I, and i think many others too, would be totally fine with any pokemon on switch. Just dont fuck the new one up. if you need more time, bring a port

I don't think you have to worry, pretty sure they are giving it the same treatment as Zelda and Mario, it's going to finally be taken to the next level.
However, that also means it won't be a 2018 game, it'll be 2019 at the earliest.

The best? Woah woah relax. Its gonna be like x and y where its similar to what we know but with better graphics, bigger areas and new little mechanics but still playing the same ish. The next game after the remake of dp and plt should be the one that will take full advantage of the switch as GameFreak likes to push

I think Game freak started developing this around the same time as they started developing Ultra Sun & Moon with 2 teams 1 working on US & UM and the other working on Pokémon Switch because I doubt that game took that much effort. That's why I think they have gotten at least almost enough time to release it this year.

The most important thing is Nintendo hitting their targets to satisfy their investors. The bold claim of selling 20m Switches in a fiscal year will NOT be done without Pokemon. This is the most important factor, hell this is the only factor. Pokemon is 99.9% confirmed for LATE 2018, ready or not, whether you want it not.

No offense, but Pokemon is a pretty copy and paste sorta franchise in terms of development and they don't really push the graphical capabilities of their hardware all that much. So, it wouldn't surprise me if the developers at Gamefreak could have already finished the game and have just been sitting on it for the last 3 or 4 months already.

Psychonara Productions Pokemon Sun and Moon pushed the 3DS to its limits.

I think the pressure mostly comes from the media and the "fans", because they already said (back then) that we shouldn't expect enything before late 2018 or even 2019 but the media picks up those "rumors" and spread it all over. So "naturally" people get their hopes/hype up and expect a 2018 release and not the "later" part.
They only said that they are working on it. Nothing more.
Honestly i think a lot of people might be really disappointed when Pokemon Switch hits the shelves and if this feels like a "rushed" game then they would blame Nintendo/GameFreak but not themselves or the media.
