By the way, you do realize that your degree is useless without a masters or a PhD, do you? To become a counselor, you need at least a masters in psychology. Also, you got a career in TVclip possibly because you didnโ€™t apply to enough jobs in the workforce. Congratulations for stepping into the train that goes to the land of Retardville.

But I must say, even though you're absolutely amazing at what you do now, I don't think you'd be this amazing if you hadn't studied psychology, in a sense, you're kinda like a new age therapist, instead of helping one patient at a time in some office somewhere, you're helping 13m of us at a time in your own office with each video you create. You're like Psychologist 2.0 lol. So your degree isn't completely useless.

Your degree is useless if it's on a path, which you are *never* going to walk down in life. Lilly supports and encourages the fact that *education is necessary* . But *most* of the Indian parents (or Asian parents or in general "PaRenTs") make it sound like if we ever dream anything outside the field of education, its entirely bs and waste of time. Which is not true. And I personally think that's what Lilly was also trying to say, not that degrees are waste or anything, its just there are always options which should be valued as much education is.
Edit: I thought the coffee maker would've been a mirror or her own photo or Scarbro โœจ(ใฃโ—”๏ธฃโ—กโ—”แท…)ใฃc(โ—•๏ธฃโ—กโ—•แท…c)โœจ Lov Lilly~~

Hey Lily, you can't say that your degree is useless because the experiences that your education gave you shaped who you are today. For example: your schooling helped cultivate your discipline in getting stuff done and that's why you're so disciplined and motivated now. Everything is connected. #deepthoughtslol

I've loved and adored every single video of Lilly's, but I have to say something about this one. Everything is brilliant about it except for the message it sends, especially for those young enough to have their values and belief system still growing and unset.
Agreeing with what several comments above have stated, I believe the intention of this video was that a mere degree does not get you through life just like that, and that it is not ENOUGH. However, I find it super easy to interpret this message wrong, and instead think what she's saying is "degrees mean nothing, and is absolutely useless". Of course, it is easy to say so if you unfortunately have found yourself receiving a degree from a field of study that you hate, or just far away from your ideal career's direction. I know so many people that suffer from this situation. But a lot of those people actually learned a valuable life lesson since, and managed to consider and compare thoroughly before heading into the field they want.
To me, someone who had to drop out of college and support myself, in another country where even the language is not the same, I find all of the education I've received, that is a high school diploma and 1 year in college, tremendously useful, and in many occasions all I had to rely on. For instance, if I hadn't worked the hardest in my class and really mastered at the English language, I don't think I'd be able to find any work at all. If I didn't have any maths knowledge, how could I possibly work as a cashier and learn to manage and record daily sales. And to Lilly's example, if I didn't learn at least something about psychology out of personal interest, I believe I'd have half as many friends as today, and quite a few opportunities would be turned down just because I don't know how to interact with people more efficiently and appropriately. To this point, I personally believe psychology might just be one of the most useful fields of knowledge in life.
Does degree equal education? Not necessarily. I've grown up with enough peers that absolutely resented certain subjects yet still managed to achieve a degree just like everyone else. But the process of going to school, attending and paying attention in classes, passing examines, and finally do whatever it is requires to receive that piece of paper called a "degree", is a collective and proven effective process of learning and enhancing newly acquired knowledges. From an anthropological point of view, if degrees are truly "useless", then why is it that human society hasn't eliminated it through history? In contrast, the invention of school system marked quite a leap forward among all civilizations. We get our youngsters in one centralized location, have educated and experienced intellects teach them useful things, isn't that so much more efficient than any other way? Degrees are just one socially accepted standard serving as evidence of education. Just like why we have to have IDs, so that other people and officials have a quick enough way of knowing for sure you are who you say you are.
Cannot believe how long of a comment I've written. I admit that I probably am what American kids call a "geek" or "nerd", in the sense that I truly love learning. Although I haven't been in school for a few years now, I've never stopped learning through different media and platforms. This is where I find my soul rests, to go to sleep every night knowing that I've come to know just a bit more about this world, and that I've received a bit more education. And when I can feasibly afford it, I will return to school and receive that degree so many fortunate ones loathe.
Best wishes to all, and to the younger generation still in high school and below, please please please don't stop learning. Take a deep look within yourself and ask what do you want to be growing up? Seriously ask that, and after getting that answer, work so so so hard in your own field. Trust me, it'll be the best thing you ever do. And getting a degree will generally making being employed so much easier, at least in the beginning stage of your career.

  • Viktรณria Horinkovรก

Besides the fact that this is, obviously, comedy video (that I can totally relate to) Lily is definitely not arguing here for not getting a college education (those, that know her even as little as I do, know this). She supports getting a basic education to everyone. The real issue pointed out is the gap between the school system and job market - getting a degree is no guarantee. Especially for those majors like psychology and English (which I am also studying). And yes, college is best for a profession like, for example, a surgeon (or any doctor school).
Truth to be told, I would NOT go to college if I had to pay for it - we have it free, only pay for housing, which is like a fraction of what you have to pay in America. And get this, we even have scholarships for those things so if you are really poor and cannot afford even to pay for your food but you get good grades, you can still get an education.

But in all seriousness, what happened to learning for the sake of learning? Why do we have to have the pressure of only learning something that will lead to making money? That perception is what is wrong, because that isn't the pathway most likely to get you anywhere. We're pushed into debt for degrees that won't get us a job, but merely fund old rich people's lives. Education should be free, for those who seek it, not an expensive chore.
Follow your passion, because you'll need motivation to keep pushing you forward. Money alone is not a strong enough driving force. Any job will earn money. What will fulfil you?

I have two degrees. One in business management and one in interactive media design, and I currently teach maths and health to a home schooled boy with disabilities. I am working on some things that will use my degrees, but they will be passion projects, so... Yeah...
I often mistake what I learnt doing my degrees for common knowledge, and am often dumbfounded by how little people actually know about management and game design principles, because so much of it is common sense!

Let's all choose not to do a degree & become youtubers!
I'd never say my degree was a waste. I may be severely underpaid and extremely overworked but I know that it's just a part of the journey. I barely know anything. I'm like a toddler bumping into everything trying to figure out how the world works, but this isn't the best message to send to kids.
