So many wrong facts! IRARF ordered 80, received 79. F14 was called BombCat for good reasons, GBU Bombs + Lantirn pod. It was the best Carrier-fleet defender ever made to this day & it was a good long range A2G, CAS, FAC(A).

We need to look at are history... hitler at the time had the most technological military equipment but numbers were low. We on the other hand copied an pasted our equipment in the masses... let’s old stock new box this bad boy(F-16s F-14s A-10s) specially when we continue to fight 3 rd world countries with lil or no Air Force!

Tomcat all weather capable, engaging 12 targets simuiltainiously reflects long sucessful peace time deployment, later retrospective production interest impared by cost overuns and other lost complexity's to emulate elusive TOMCAT efficiancy.

Did a tiger cruise on the Ranger with pops in the 80s. They did a mid pacific airshow for us. Watched a Tomcat break the sound barrier at sea level. I was sold!!! Baddest a$& jet on the planet. Sad to see it retired.

    Huge fan of the Tomcat.
I don't understand why they just don't put new avionics and weapons system and still use the same platform. The could call it the F-14X.

I got to "hot fuel" 2 of those bad boys when I was still in high school working at LAX back in 85! Both pilots were Navy but the RIOs were in black flight suits with no insignia, I always wondered who they were.

    • Thunder_Mouse_2014
      Thunder_Mouse_2014 15 days ago

That's damn awesome. It's irrelevant now, just wondering what two apex fighters were doing at a civilian airport for fuel? Especially if the mystique you lend to the black-suit RIO's has any weight, they could have fueled in flight or diverted to Edwards which is in range unless the were 'effing off' which is unlikely. I'm just jealous you got to touch the beautiful Tomcat.

in a parallel universe the Question is, would america sell this Technology, two fighers for 200 Million Dollars and a guarantee for support for twenty years to the Bundesheer in Austria? I hope so that my Country is not being excluded of being able to replace 12 Eurofighters and purchase 2 f 14 from america with a guaranteed support for the next twenty years and a all complete cost of 1 Billion Dollars.
i know we dont live in this Kind of world, with this Kind of Military deals. heck, i wish we were ..

@Ana nimity Su-57? That thing is ugly as hell. Between the "almost, but not quite" bulbous stealth design and the bulging engines left over from the Flanker, it's a pig. I doubt it ever enters production beyond the six or seven per year they ordered, if that.

Mr. McManus, ignor the trolls. The F-14 is immaculate. At 5:24 of this video or any straight-on view of the aircraft really shows how closely it resembles a live bird of prey in flight. The F-14 really deserved the moniker "Eagle" for this reason, but it was designed to fight like a tomcat. I look upon all aircraft with boyish wonder, but he F-14 creates a rush to my loins like no other.

Navy mechanic said he was thrilled the F-14 was retired. They were a nightmare to work on and nearly impossible to keep the required number airworthy. F-18 and new F-35 (navy version) require far less maintenance per flight hour.
However, the F-14 was an exceptional interceptor and later versions were great ground attacked craft because of their large payload capacity. The super hornets have taken over, and they are a very versatile aircraft with much lower maintenance requirements.

The F18 is sleeker and all like the fast sports car but the F14 is the great daily driver when you needed stuff done. Had fun watching them doing bombing runs on Bosnia. Best part was watching the fly bus come in to land on the carrier though and the hard hitting of the deck. Always could tell when those babies came in.

If I had my say, the F-14 would be the best fighter aircraft for long range patrol and interdiction of enemy aircraft. Wished that the United States would've just sold this fella to their closest ally in the Pacific(hint hint).

F-14s were great. Did you know Iran bought them and used them against Iraq? They shot down a hundred planes. In a few instances a Phoenix missile downed three planes. One Phoenix missal. Three planes. They were flying in formation. That occurred three times. F-14 is awesome and one time I allowed a pilot and weapons officer to go anal-vag on me. It was sweet. I took them home and had them do that in front of my family. I've got all kinds of problems, but the F-14 is my favorite plane. masturbating.

There is no mention of the impetus for the F-14: the MiG-25.

    • david nichols
      david nichols 7 days ago

@D 349 The F-15 was ALSO created because of the MiG-25, not upgraded because of it. Secondly, it never needed its maneuverability improved to counter the MiG-25.

    • D 349
      D 349 12 days ago

The MiG-25 was really a pure interceptor to combat high-altitude bombers. It was terrible in the maneuverability category. It was the F-15 program which had its specs upgraded to counter the MiG-25, not the F-14.

The United States Navy Grumman F-14A, F-14B, and F-14D Tomcat is still one of my most favorite 4th generation fighters! The F-14A and Especially the F-14B and F-14D later on became not only Fighter Interceptor but also a Strike Fighter able to hit ground targets too!! "Anytime Baby!" Hooyah!

  • Curtis Conway
    Curtis Conway 18 days ago

LTV = Ling-Temco-Vought. The US Navy F-14 Tomcat was never replaced with like kind or at least equally performing aircraft. The F-35A/B/C Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter is not a replacement. The INTERCEPTOR Mission requires quick spin-up and Launch, and speed to target so the intercept can take place as far away form the fleet (the shore for USAF ADIZ defense) as possible. I really look forward to the fleets new Fleet Air Defense Fighter.
