Will These Plumbers Properly Fix a Water Heater Leak?

  • Can these repairmen fix a simple water heater leak or will they try to sell us an expensive replacement? Inside Edition rented a house in Montclair, New Jersey, for an entire month, tricking it out with cameras and then calling the fix-it guys to see what happened. The footage was transmitted in real time to a remote command post. In Inside Edition's second installment in a special series of investigations, we created a simple water heater leak, then called a variety of different plumbers to see what they would do.

They called us in August for our opinion - and the easiest and most legitimate method would be to just blow out the pilot light.

You should shout out the guys that do it right instead of just saying "good job guys." That's kinda messed up

To be fair if I came up to that leaking I’d replace water flex. If I just torqued down the old supply I’d be blamed when it blows off.

So when I first started in the trade I had something similar to this. I tightened the nut and stopped the leak. A day later water was spraying out of the dip tube. What happened was in tightening the nut down I broke the corroded nipple on the dip.
So yes sometimes you don’t touch things.

And how many people wouldn't complain if you tightend the loose nut then it blew a week later and you charged the full $1500? The answer about 5%! not saying what they did was right but the trades people get ripped off alot more then the client from what I've seen in the past 12 years on site

  • Dan Miser

Hmmm. Depends how the plumber words it... old water heater and a failing seal often means more is about to fail. Not unreasonable to suggest that imo. Of course 100% hafta replace is a lie...
What about the guy that tightens the fitting then the next day it blows out because of old age. He gets sued for something he may not have even charged for.

Any plumber sees a heater over ten years old and they'll tell you it should be replaced but these guys just said it 100% needs to be which is wrong to say. That young definitely was new and had no idea what he was saying or doing.

Everybody has to make a living. If you want a honest opinion then call a family owned company that you have used for many years in the past. Dont call some random plumber who dosent no you. Obviously your going to get hustled, everyone is trying to make a living and feed their family. Nice guys always finish last, I no this because im a nice guy and people take advantage of that.
