Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model. | Cameron Russell

  • Published on Jan 16, 2013
  • Cameron Russell admits she won "a genetic lottery": she's tall, pretty and an underwear model. But don't judge her by her looks. In this fearless talk, she takes a wry look at the industry that had her looking highly seductive at barely 16-years-old.

Right. Looks don't matter. The only thing that matters is pleasure right. That's kinda what she said and how you look at things in "different lights" can make a "real" difference and how you perceive them. But much like worthlessness, pleasure is absolute. And the day we can live without the need to feel good or the need to run away from pain is the day looks will actually not matter... because the world will be enlightened... or dust

I simply cant belive her words..she talk one thing and by my opinion live other life... She become consciously part of multimilion industry who brainwash young peolple and only goal is to make more and more money. Many of these peole live too long decadent and folse happy life and all is like glamur covered in gemstones...and we can vitness so many pearly smiles. So please ..speare us . I cant even listen her its for me - only sord of experiment to washing her slef .. I dont trust peple like she is sorry..she spend to much time in these decadent, scaterry, holistic ,too many times drug abusing and to many times ugly industry. Is beter to listen to real heros in our lives - our mom and father and grandparents who try to do all to raise us in to decent human being....

lol This woman complain that she must worry about her looks every day because it is her job. That is like a musician complaining that he must clean his instrument every day or it will not sound good. Is it really so difficult for you to moisturize and pluck the eyebrows every day when there are men who work in the coal mines and do not make a youtube Ted Talk to say that they are not happy in their job?

isn't it messed up how there is a legacy view of "beautiful"? looks won't make you happy on its own, neither will money, neither power, neither status nor fame.

  • Raymond Lee

It does to me. Can I have your body please😅

  • GeorgeFormbyVEVO

lol This woman says that the standards of beauty are decided by society and imposed on us. She says it is not right that mainly tall, white women with shiny hair are considered attractive and the fashion industry is to blame.

Let me ask you, do you think that this woman's boyfriend/husband is 400lbs and look like Yoda? Or is it more likely that he is also a model and is tanned with dark hair eyes and ripped with a 6-pack and has lots of money?

Is complete bullshit to say that fashion industry creates these images of attraction, they are already there and are simply exploited by fashion. Low body fat, smooth skin and hair is attractive to all people, it is not some kind of trick by the fashion industry. This woman is full of self-pity and hypocrisy. She says she is does not agree with the way fashion industry works and standards about beauty but yet she continues to work as a model and cry she is not fully happy because she can not ever be the president? Give me a break.

I love her honesty....it was by far the most modest... most people with privileges don't acknowledge their privileges and group or gravitate with other individuals who do the same and look down on those without any of such kind. She sees those with disadvantages. And shows no favoritism and partiality.

  • bee boo boo bop
bee boo boo bop Day ago

She is talking about acknowledging our own privileges. The mere fortune it seems that some by chance to be born more of the archetype of what is "good" in societal demands and standards; the more kinder, considerate, mercy we receive from favorable or unfavorable consequences of life. Society constructs "The perfect image" that are unrealistic in real life. I wish she would of made mention of how the earth can take advantage/ abuse "beauty" and can try to amass by greed its nature. Models are usually pressured to find unhealthy ways to stay super thin; and how they are disposed of after their youth seems to fade of.... she mentioned whiteness several times but I take that is not one of that main points onlookers got. Femininity in this world is classified as white, delicate is classified as thin (no muscle), graceful is classified as tall.

Looks matter when the person you like does not like you back: looks doesn’t matter when someone you like likes you back.

  • Dead Man
    Dead Man 2 days ago

I’m gonna be completely honest right now. I feel........conflicted. There is a pert of me that’s like “what would she know? She’s beautiful and she won’t know what it’s like to look ugly” while the other part of me is like “she does present some valid points and since she is pretty she would know best if looks aren’t everything”. My more emotional and erratic part of the brain wants to dismiss her since she appeared to be patronizing all the while the more logical and intellectual part of my brain sees the merit in her statement and is showing me that it would be hypocritical to dismiss her because of her looks.
If anyone is to blame it’s the person who wrote the title. This is more of a message to pretty people and jealous woman then ugly people.

For everyone saying you are missing the point and then following up with discussing her points in regards to looks... that is also missing the point. This talk was unpacking the genetic lottery that perpetuates systematic oppression. She was utilizing her 'privilege' and 'advantages' to showcase what it looks like to be benefitting from a system that favors white people. I am white, and I find that too many people are uncomfortable to admit that they have reaped rewards by simply being white. This is why the racial discrepancies in our political climate are still so strained and tense, because white people get pissed if they are told that they are naturally benefitting off of systematic oppression. This discomfort shuts down any chance for a real discussion for change, and looking at the comment section there are too many people who are quick to insult the speaker than consider what the speaker has just done: showcasing the actual problems facing this country when it comes to the genetic lottery.

The reason why so many models are not women of color? Light physics.
The darker something is, the less light it reflects. Thus, the less detail is shown. Now apply that to people. If you have a dark skinned model and you have to use more light in order to bring out their features, then you end up washing out the lighter colors of whatever they may be wearing. It's just light physics. And, if it's supposed to be about the clothes, why do they even use "pretty" models in the first place? Stick someone in one of those morph suit things and dress them. Let them walk the runway like that.

  • Gary Hawkins

So you're saying it caused self-consciousness (less able to be spontaneous and just living).
That's also why females should not be told they are beautiful.
You mean well, but that declares (and her heart hears): I am judging you.

    • Superstition L
      Superstition L 2 days ago

There's a difference between "You are beautiful and I enjoy it" and "You are beautiful and valuable to other people". The former will cause self-consciousness while the latter is a compliment to what they possess. This also applies to men. The closest analogy I can think of would be "You are generous and I enjoy it" and "You are generous and valuable to other people".

It's sad that she was invited to speak at TED and nobody saw a problem. She is not sophisticated/mature enough to speak comfortably to strangers. Remember when you're young and you speak just to express your feelings, rather than to influence the listeners. She's like that. She will feel embarrassed when she grow up one day and look at this video of herself. I'm not questioning her because everyone has been there before, but it's wrong for the TED people to support/encourage her in doing this.
