6 years after and honestly, I now see Tesla as a joke, no new ideas, no market for luxuries electric cars after nearly 10 years, and my boy Tesla has a lot a lot of problems. Hybrid is much better and stable. At the same time consumers have a wide range of selections. Guess it’s just not the right time for electric cars yet. In fact Elon is a joke, hes got a great concept, got the money from people, built the car, spread fake news, times were good for Tesla in 2012 when it hit the market. Then he just started doing ridiculous things to draw attention and money. Well, rip Elon, now he only have two ways to go, either become one of the greatest revolutionary people in history, or the ultimate failure in jail for his “ disappeared” 5 billion dollars. Now in 2018, it’s hard to say that Tesla is even going to make it through 2020.

I like the Tesla, but still too expensive to own. Most Americans can't afford one. I hate the but you will save in long run on gas cost expression, Sure i guess. But electric cars will never be mainstream until initial cost of car is reduced. I see hybrids selling better at first. Henry Ford had a saying that he built cars that his own workers could afford, That's how Ford became so popular.

Tesla (P100D) is my daily driver to work. it's actually quite a lot easier than a gas car. it charges in my garage every night, so i ALWAYS have a full charge every day. gone are the days where i get in my car in the morning and go "oh damn gotta fill up on my way to work". in fact literally the only time i have to do any charging (other than while i'm sleeping) is when i take the family on long trips. and even then, there has never been any range anxiety. there are superchargers everywhere, and they're usually located in the parking lots of restaurants and malls. the car tells you where they all are and directs you there, and even knows in real time exactly how many stalls are in use. it's by far the best car i've ever owned for both daily commute and long trips.

Yet another marketing pitch. 10-year battery life, 250 mile range, the tooth fairy. Three made up things innocent minds enjoy believing in. My beef is how long before such falsehoods lead to a ban on the ICE leaving me with the actual 50 mile range and 3 year battery life and triple the COO. Of course the car says over 200 miles of battery left, and the statements I got from Bernie Madoff said I was rich rich rich.

    • Melaine White
      Melaine White 2 months ago

So I looked at the chart and was amused over it showing Teslas having battery packs whose maximum capacity INCREASES over time and use (along with there being many batteries with more than 100% capacity, huh?). I did like the comment to the effect: "Why can't I get these magical batteries for my tablet?"
All indications are that this is simple marketing blather. So, this 300 mile range means you drive for 300 miles routinely before plugging in? Didn't think so. Oh, the car tells you, "Sure, of course, I can take you 1,000 miles before you'll have to charge, as long as you charge at 50 miles for real."
Okay, the magic is real. So that every lithium battery pack I've ever used comes nowhere close to this magical longevity is because physics work differently in a Tesla than in my presence?

What a timeless design. I can't think of a car designed in 2012 which still looks like a thing from the future today 🤔

  • fenderstratguy

DISCLAIMER: I have loved Tesla since the beginnning and I love it now. I want one someday!
One thing I believe it is fair to add here is that these cars do cost a little extra to insure because the aluminum is harder to repair. So, that WILL offset any fuel savings. In short, I'm not convinced the car is CHEAPER to own and operate compared to a fossil car, at least yet.
That said....what other car can say, "The day you buy our car you probably get the worst software it will ever have! Then it just keeps getting better, unlike other mass-produced cars that just deteriorate over time.
And with fuel costs trending up over the years, who knows what fuel will cost in the future? I would suspect electricity costs will actually be quite reasonable in the future with all these solar roofs and fields of solar panels.
Maybe some new geothermal electricity coming online out in Yellowstone (I hope)?

    • Melaine White

Hmmm, just not buyin' it fsg. I don't "update" my phone etc. since "updates" are the path to dump more advertising on me. My mandatory right now bank app "update" netted me ads before I can see my balance. A car that feels free to, and is able to change my driving experience at will--a big no thanks.

Elon Musk and his designers are smart, innovative engineers with no sense of aesthetics. Visually, the cars are boring. Not ugly, just flavorless. I could not spot one on the street (or even in outer space) because every model follows some generic, melting-pot blend of other cars with no distinguishing, unique features. If only he would be as daring with visual design as he is with engineering. He doesn't understand art as an important form of communication, one that could express his concept, his automotive vision.

If any American has anything bad to say about Tesla, then it's idiocy. This is American. It's a revolutionary product. It performs very well.... and it's built by Americans in America. Besides, the base model will smoke most of the cars on the streets and anything with Ludicrous mode will smoke about anything out there. Perfect out the box. Now that's American. It's an icon.

I bet it is...but I'm still angry about the diesel-shaming here in germany...the whole scandal was just made up. No one cares about it...VW Diesels were still better than literally everyone else. We germans are getting kind of robbed of the cars we have by the government and are almost forced to buy electric cars that are either too expensive or WIP's that don't really work.

They need a system that takes the place of the supercharge stations, and make the batteries easily interchangeable within like 10 minutes. Instead of charging the same battery for hours every time it’s dead, just swap it out for a new one with a full charge and be back on the road in the same amount of time as a gasoline car filling up.
I’m sure designing something like that onto a car would be quite difficult but maybe when they start a new model, just build the car around the idea of easily accessible battery location or maybe have it slide out from underneath the car.

    • Mark Plott
      Mark Plott 3 months ago

fatdudewh33lchair - Musk already designed a battery swap system for Tesla Model S , it’s not practical as the battery cost around $6000. Besides in 2018, most people live within 150 miles of a Supercharger.
