    Snatch Block!
I want to take a moment to thank those of you who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I'd also like to point out 2 things about this video.
#1. You'll notice Jeremy Fielding is in this video. He's the "Contraption Fabricator" that's started working with me now because of your support on Patreon. He's a great designer, father, and friend. You'll be seeing more of Jeremy around thanks to those who support at www.patreon.com/smartereveryday/
#2. If you'd like to 3D print the Snatch Blocks and pulleys we use in this video they are here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4022579
#3. I really enjoy KiwiCo and I think you will too. I got them as a Christmas gift for my children years ago, and it was a huge hit. It was after that experience that I reached out to their team and asked if I could advertise for them because of how good it was for our family. I think you'll enjoy it too. www.kiwico.com/smarter
It was 3 things... I ended up pointing out 3 things.

I was thinking, how can you get more force out, than you put in, that's not possible. However what you're getting is 2x force x 1/2 distance, so the same energy is expended. It's just a lever in the end. Archimedes must have pulled on 200m or rope to get the ship to move a few cm.....

I am not sure I understand how they work from your video. This is how I understand pulleys to work, they spread out the weight along the length of the cord. So you pull more with each part having less of the weight on it. Am I wrong?

Exactly.. they allow using smaller force, but in trade for time..
      Total work remains the same..

Those small snatch blocks and pulleys would be great for teaching rigging systems in rope rescue. A whole system could be set up on a table top for refresher training. A great evolution for a small group or poor weather conditions! 👍🙂🚒

I knew the basics around pulleys, but never how it actually works or why it worked! Thank you so much for this, this is a lot more amazing than I initially thought. Also the bit of history had me flabbergasted, holy cow!

I once worked for a guy who had a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from MIT, and I asked him one day to explain a pulley. His answer: It's a lever. Blew my mind...so simple.

Oh they have so much heart.. They like you cause your amplifying the science aimlessly. Its called drifting. Lingering on anothers idea as if it made u smart to learn about itm and the rest of the world desperatwely needs your help to understand it. Well u got the last part right except dumbass leading the dumbass 😆 is what u got correct

Ud also notice that ur only moving the brick half the distance. Pull 1 foot brick moves 6 inches instead of a foot. Its that simple. You are way over thinking this guy

It's basically like a gearbox, but with pulleys. Every time you add a pulley it will be like switching to a lower gear, lower rpm's but more torque! So yes think of it like a primitive gearbox. 😉

  • luigi mario
    luigi mario Day ago

You think pulleys are so great. Attach the end of your pulley system to a winch and suddenly, you don't have to go down the block to pull your weight. Add a locking mechanism and release system and suddenly, you have a real piece of machinery. Think of the applications: portcullises; cranes; wrecking balls; trebuchets; energy storage without electricity.

Yes but the reason the snatch block or the pulley work it this: you make the support push along with you; pulley do not multiplicate your physical strength! As always btw cool video

My 6th grade twin daughters are out of school for a few weeks because of the corona virus. I set up a 1, 2 and three pulley system similar to this yesterday as part of their at home schooling. They totally loved the hands on experience of this. I had them make illustrations with the load and effort numbers in pounds. Today we are doing levers. Then winches and hand cranks. You have great content on your channel.

OK, Great video! Now here is something you really need to do! Show the mechanical advantage of a truckers hitch! There are a ton of people out there that think a truckers hitch gives you a 3 to 1 mechanical advantage, I think it is 2 to 1 because the physics of 3 to 1 does not make sense. Just like in this video, the mechanical advantage was always a power of 2 to 1, so it would be 2, 4, 8, 16, 32... to 1. Please make a video showing proof one way or the other and settle this!!
