Sesame Street: Abby Cadabby & Julia Sing Sunny Days

  • Published on Mar 19, 2017
  • Meet Julia, the newest friend on Sesame Street. Julia has autism. She’s also a really good singer and can remember all the words to lots of songs…like the favorite Sesame Street song, “Sunny Days”. Abby’s happy to join in!

If this little segment saves just one little autistic girl from giving up on her love of humming because she keeps being told "it's annoying" by her peers, then I owe Sesame Street a wholehearted 'thank you'. I wish I'd had someone tell me it was okay, when I was that age. :')

Autism is one of the most misunderstood conditions in society. I'm glad that Julia was brought to Sesame Street. I think this new muppet will really be great for the young generation of today to learn more about ASD and what to expect from someone who has it. Maybe it'll also help parents to be more aware of the condition and have a clearer understanding of it. Autism comes in different shapes and sizes, hence it being known as a spectrum disorder. So needless to say, the way Julia is depicted is not the same as others who are on the spectrum. However, her character could show audiences what it may be like befriending someone with autism, as well as what it can be like to have it yourself. :)

    • NoriMori
      NoriMori 4 months ago

Not everyone with autism is going to relate to her. Everyone with autism is different, so obviously a single autistic character can't represent all of them. She's not supposed to represent all of them; she's just supposed to show some aspects of what autism can be like, to raise awareness and tolerance, which will help all people with autism, not just the ones who can relate to her most.

It is cool how despite the character being autistic, they don't constantly shove it down your throat and have her do normal things with other people, while the autism is just a subtle aspect of her personality. If more tv shows could do that, that would be pretty cool.

Something I HIGHLY appreciate about this is that Julia is a GIRL with Autism. Growing up as a girl on the spectrum born in 1995 (Aspergers) no one was able to figure out what I had until I was an adult! They labeled it "Auditory Processing Disorder" and just assumed I was just being a ditsy girl or shy but my mother knew something was troubling me and did everything she could to help me. We often see white boys with autism studied or talked about in documentaries (Life Animated, Aspergers are Us) and while I relate to a certain degree, I never see myself entirely. While I agree with the concept of "You meet one person with Autism, you've met one person with autism" and not everyone is the same, often girls will be misdiagnosed or it is assumed girls are rarer when it comes to disabilities. That is NOT the case at all, so thank you for Julia! You have no idea how much I would have appreciated this as a little girl, I see similarities already <3

    • Stephie2007
      Stephie2007 8 months ago

GeminiJoule I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 1993 just months shy of my fourth birthday. I was also born with hydrocephalus so I had a seizure disorder to boot. But thanks to early intervention such as occupational therapy and age appropriate brain games such as memory games and social skills classes and post-grad transition programs after my school years as well as some very good agencies that really know their stuff. I have been able to thrive in a so called "normal" world. I should mention that more inclusion and education based awareness like this is needed in the media. Otherwise, all you get is the fear based propaganda that makes autistic people look bad and makes parents (like my dad in some cases ) stay ignorant to the progress we are trying to make in our own lives. I don't have any kids of my own yet but I applaud Sesame Workshop for introducing us to little Julia.😀

Green screen is tricky. Anything green just blends right into it but shadows can make the process more difficult to blend. The blue eyes are keep the eyes from blending in to the background because otherwise Julia's irises would look like the background the people are projecting onto the green screen.

    • Kayla Violet

Julia's main puppet has green eyes.. But in the shorts or green screen areas, she has blue eyes. I'm not sure what happened to her eyes though, it went from blue to greenish to grayish and back to blue.
