The Skill of Humor | Andrew Tarvin | TEDxTAMU

  • Published on Jun 13, 2017
  • Humor is something that transcends most barriers. It is a common unification; a concept understood by all. Despite this, there exists a large portion of the population that does not think they can utilize humor. Andrew Tarvin will show you that everyone can use humor.
Andrew Tarvin is the world’s first Humor Engineer teaching people how to get better results while having more fun. He has worked with thousands of people at 200+ organizations, including P&G, GE, and Microsoft. Combining his background as a project manager at Procter & Gamble with his experience as an international comedian, Andrew’s program are engaging, entertaining, and most important, effective. He is a best-selling author, has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and TEDx, and has delivered programs in 50 states, 18 countries, and 3 continents. He loves the color orange and is obsessed with chocolate.

Does anyone else find him very unfunny. All of his jokes completely contradict the points that he makes. He says that you should make jokes about your life, but then he makes jokes about star bucks.

His lines are funny but for a stand up comic he’s missing a lot of his comedic timing. Although he does kind of start to feel it towards the end. Maybe it’s just due to the fact that he’s doing a rehearsed speech and not a comedy set.

I always wanted to do stand up comedian. Growing up i used to dream about it, sometimes to often and it started to affect my School grades.
    And then one day........
I worked up enough courage to get up on stage of this packed out Club, My nerves were going crazy, then I heard my name called to pop out on to the Main Stage, front and Center! I started off with story (A few ppl started laughing) then as I went through my set, I was interweaving all of my stories, and as my set went on, EVERYONES laughter got more and more intensively.
So after that night, I thought I had better see my results over at least 3 - 4 gigs.
So after all of that, I decided that being a Stand up Comedian was not for me...🙄😲

I wish I was good at telling jokes. I’m better with absurd spontaneous humor; turning situations that just appear in everyday life into something fun; twisting and turning it. Sometimes even to the point that I and the person I’m joking with forget what we were even talking about in the first place.

I'm going to give this guy the benefit of the doubt, and assume he's much funnier when he does stand-up. As someone who also spent years on the stage performing stand-up comedy, this guy is not funny in this TedTalk. But, it's a different venue, so maybe he's much better in a different format.

This video is as useless as it is 'paramount' useful. It's like he's using his own weapons to defeat an army of us - people who leave sincere comments on videos - the ones who actually watch it for the content in detriment of the - so useful, I get it - newly welcome viewers...I know you get the point. The idea to be brought to discussion is: How much of what you say is new to us - regular blue collar workers who botheres to research - and how much of it is a real milestone in the lives of our, up to this point, acclaimed coworkers?

As much as we wanna believe that humor is a ''skill'', and it can be learned, there are people who get humor way more, and personnality assessement DOES give you a good idea. It is especially the case when it comes to timing, energy and the delivery of humor.
But of course , you can theorize humor, learn it and good at it. And this guy did that, he "understood'' humor. And good for him, it takes some work and it is brilliant from his part!
My point is: you CAN learn humor, get good and be funny. But I don't think you can learn how to be a natural regarding humor. The great successful stand up comedians know how humor works, but also have this natural side to them that this guys don't have ( and i mean no disrespect in that, like i said, he deserves a lot of respect because he learned how to be funny).
