SF was missing 3 starting offensive linemen in the KC game & Young was running for his life. The SF oline was crippled the first 7 weeks in 1994 at one point missing 4 starters & multiple backups. They lost 40-8 vs an average Eagles team 2 weeks after KC. But once the line got healthy in week 9 they blew out every team they played except Dallas.

This is a prime example of why no Qb playing today should ever be considered the greatest of all time. Montana, Marino, Young, Elway, Aikman, Bradshaw, Favre, and many others played when football was truly football. They took shot after shot and had to still dust themselves off, and lead their teams to victory. These Qb's playing in this era can't even be touched. Brady, Rodgers, Newton, Brees, Rivers will never be considered by me as the best ever. Maybe the greatest of the wimpy flag football era. 😂

  • Chance Smart

This is a great video. There is something more I have to say. There is this match up where Steve Young and Montana were on the same roster. Then Montana got traded to the Chiefs. Like they said master vs. apprentice. The master is in the AFC and 49ERS have the apprentice in the NFC. However we can repeat that history again because Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo were on the same roster. Jimmy Garoppolo got traded to the 49ERS. If Brady retires the year after next. We could be possibly see a regular season game between Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo. The master is in the AFC. We have the Apprentice in the NFC. How nice would that be for the 49ERS to repeat history again? Accept the Patriots could be included to do this for the 49ERS. It's not a repeat for the Patriots because this hasn't happened before to them. But they can share a first time with us. But if the 49ERS also played Patriots in the super bowl. That will break a record because that hasn't happened before. Lets do it. Tom Brady vs. Jimmy Garoppolo in a regular game and a Super bowl game. GO 49ERS!

I know this is about Young & Montana, but at the end of the video the truth was told about D. Thomas. I'm a die hard Denver Broncos Fan and I have Von Miller but he still isn't as good as Thomas was for the Chiefs. Still to this day after 31 years of watching NFL Football, Thomas and LT are still the vest OLB's to ever rush the passers. I just thank God I grew up in the 80's & 90's where Sports was really at it's peak. Simply the best. & I'll still take John Elway over these 2 any day to start a Franchise. But I'll take Montana & Young over Brady any damn day.

4 Times Super Bowl MVP / 9 Super Bowl appearances/ Every passing record in playoff history/💍💍💍💍💍💍's .. Hey Chump ask Atlanta if they would take Young or Montana over Brady .. down 28-3 with 21 minutes left -- Brady goes 15/15 - A NFL playoff record 212 yards passing in less than 1 quarter and he executes 2/2 point conversions to top it off.. The day any debate over who's the greatest ended PERIOD even in Brady's Super Bowl loses he passes for an NFL *RECORD* 505 yards (Philly) - you want more CHUMP?

Just stop it, please. QBs don't play QBs. 100% hype and marketing on the league/media side, and 100% delusion on the fan side. Young and the 49er offense played the KC defense. Montana and the Chiefs offense played the SF defense. Young and Montana never faced off. Manning and Brady never faced off. Roethlisberger and Rodgers never faced off. They're never on the field at the same time, and they play with entirely different guys against entirely different guys (so you can't even really compare them, let alone say that they "face off"). QBs only play each other if they get together for one-on-one basketball or ping-pong. Hype, hype, hype. Offensive and defensive lineman face off. WRs and DBs face off. You can make a case for a star RB going up against a star middle linebacker, like Jim Brown against Sam Huff back in the day. But not QBs. Just stop it.

    • Trev Mac
      Trev Mac Month ago

It's a figure of speech. The most important position on any football team is the QB *undisputed* Almost to a certainty every teams success depends on how successful it's QB plays. If you take two QB's (Manning v.s Brady) for example that are near equal in ability it's the one who plays better or makes less mistakes that decides it's teams *Fate* Quarterbacks have been honored Super Bowl MVP 29 times in 53 games - 54%. The part that eludes you is *one's team success depends almost entirely on how well it's team's most important positional player plays* If Brady outplays or out duels Manning then The Pats win. As for Young & Montana never facing off that's wrong also. The competition starts at training camp and it's their skills and a number of other variables that leads coaches to pick who their starting QB will be in the upcoming season. Ultimately Montana's skills deteriorated and it was Young who S.F kept over Montana.

Joe Montana is the Goat, if he played in todays NFL he would have at least 6 rings problably more

    • Trev Mac
      Trev Mac Month ago

+eoe123321 The part that you are missing out on *horribly* is Montana played in an *ERA* where there was no salary cap. The 49ers always had the highest payroll in the league and in order to keep all it's great players (Rice & Lott) for example it cost them a fortune. Brady has played in an era with a revolving door of players year after year. As for protection (Brady won 3 Super Bowls in his first 4 years 2001-2004 where the QB's weren't protected) those are just 2 theories of yours that were debunked -- do you want more..?

    • eoe123321
      eoe123321 2 months ago

+Limo Driver Of course i cant prove it, its just my opinion. If we could transfer the groundbreaking 49ers offense to the NFL of today where its made for offenses to have success over defenses, i think they would at least win more rings than what they had in the 80s, and with the protection that QBs have nowadays, Montana could play at a high level for much longer just like Brady is doing right now.

How come Joe Montana isn't a ultimate legend in Madden?

  • Aerolithe Lion
    Aerolithe Lion 3 months ago

Steve suffered from the Jordan effect. Just because Charles Barkley and John Stockton and Karl Malone have no rings doesn't mean they weren't as great as others at their positions... they just unfortunately existed during the era of Michael Jordan.

The 90's Cowboys were ridiculously overstuffed with talent all over the roster, so much so that they had a lot to do with free agency becoming a thing. If they existed during the 80's, Montana may only have 1-2 superbowls, and Young would have won 3-4.

    • John Re
      John Re 2 months ago

+Aerolithe Lion the 90 team beat an all time team on the road nearly killing their qb thus ending his 49er career. They were 7 pt underdogs. In that situation you cant expect them to blow them out. A win was impressive enough under the circumstances. Anyway except for the 86 playoffs the giants didnt have the offense to blow anyone out. They just wore down their opponents and won ugly physical games with great coaching parcells/ belichick combo. Im not saying the 5 yr run by the giants is better than the cowboys early 90s run. As a complete team of balanced offense and defense i have to rate the cowboys better. What i am saying and where this debate started is that the cowboys wouldnt have dominated that division like they did in the 90s. There were too many good physical teams in that division in the 80s. The skins were 12-4 in 1986 and lost 3 times to the giants. They were 14-2 vs the rest of the league and 0-3 vs the giants. Giants were 14-2. The eagles werent a great team but will give you a physical beating under coach ryan and your qb might not finish the game. Guaranteed there will be no 14-2 or 13-3 records in that division had the cowboys been in that division in the 80s. They would not have won 3 out of 4 sbs either. But i do think they would be the best team overall in that division. The giants ruined the 49ers by knocking out montana twice in 86 and 90. SF would have at least 1 more sb ,maybe 2 more if not for the giants. In dallas early 90s run the division wasnt so good. The giants only had 1 winning season at 11-5. The redskins had only 1 winning season in 92 at 10-6. The eagles were the cowboys best competition and they only had 2 wiining seasons at 11-5 and 10-6. The cowboys best competition was the 49ers which was known as the real superbowl and also the packers started to become very good and didnt peak til after the cowboys were not so good.

    • Aerolithe Lion
      Aerolithe Lion 2 months ago

+John Re Yes I did, the 86 team was awesome, but the 90 team made it into the super bowl on a last minute field goal, then won it on an errant missed field goal. They weren't dominating anyone. Dallas later beat that same Bills team 52-17

    • John Re
      John Re 2 months ago

+Aerolithe Lion no its not. Have you ever seen the 86 or 90 giants under parcells with prime LT. I guess not. They stopped arguably the best team of all time from winning 3 in a row. The 86 giants were capable of taken any team apart that ever played. The cowboys had a hard time with the 93 giants. They needed a great effort to beat them in the season finale with emmit smith 162 yds and 10 receptions in a 16-13 game that decided the division. The cowboys were great. But they wouldnt dominate. They would be another great team like the giants and redskins all fighting each other for the division. It probably would have made it easier for the 49ers having all the great nfc east teams beating each other up. The 90s cowboys main competition was the 49ers but the 90s 49ers defense wasnt so tough any more with Lott gone and haley traded to the cowboys. Plus montana was a better big game player than young. Had the 49ers kept haley it probably would have made them beat the cowboys 2 out of 3 instead. Haley hated young and was motivated to smash him in the 92 nfc championship which he did. I respect dallas for being one of the best short dynasties ever but the mid 80s giants were no joke. With them in there nobody was gonna dominate that division. It was too loaded.

    • Aerolithe Lion
      Aerolithe Lion 2 months ago

90's Dallas was maybe the most loaded team in NFL history. They had all-pros in every position group due to ripping multiple teams off in trades. To say they wouldn't have dominated the 80's NFC east is inaccurate.

    • John Re
      John Re 2 months ago

Young underachieved in the playoffs. He couldnt get passed green bay either. The 80s 49ers had a great defense plus montana was a great playoff qb. I think he beats dallas 3 out of 4. And if that dallas team was in the nfc east in the mid 80s they wouldnt have dominated the division the same. Not with the giants and redskins around.

Huge error: Marshal's hit did not have anything to do with Montana missing '91 and '92. He arrived in training camp in 1991 where he suffered an elbow injury.

+Ret1173 There's over 100 web sites that you can google "Greatest QB's of all time" Many with impeccable reputations - best football writers, former hall of fame coaches and players as contributors and i have yet to find one that has Montana over Brady. So pal you must be the premiere God of football knowledge *i bow to you* because you apparently know more than anyone else. All i know is when a team is down 28-3 in the Super Bowl with 21 minutes left there's no way Montana is going to go for (at one point in the third quarter) 15/15 and 212 yards *NFL RECORD* plus executing 2-2 point conversions to boot. Hell Brady was washed up this year and in the team's first playoff game against San Diego he leads The Pats to 4 TD's on the first 4 possessions *NFL RECORD* Hey champ get back to me when you find someone who says Montana is better than Brady.

+Trev Mac If all you can do is point to what OTHER people claim in articles ("well, this guy said it so it must be true") you've proven a lack of critical thinking and that you know very little about the topic. I'm sure you were too young or not even alive to watch Montana play so your entire adult life you've only known Brady which explains your biased hard-on for him. For every disadvantage you claimed Brady has been a victim of I can point to an equally beneficial advantage that he's enjoyed:
      1) His diet and 3-hour a day Yoga - Far less was known about dieting for an NFL player and yoga was not even close to mainstream in the early 80's.
      2) Today's players are bigger and faster - between more knowledge pertaining the diet/health/fitness Tom equaled if not surpassed that disadvantage and if players were smaller and slower during Montana's era than SO WAS MONTANA and vice versa for Brady's era - i.e. Brady is naturally bigger and heavier than Montana ever was so it's a wash.
      3) More technology to study Brady - irrelevant since the same can be said about the technology used by offensive/qb coaches to study and scheme to protect him and maximize his efficiency not to mention the benefits he enjoyed as a result of modern technology/training techniques/dieting/fitness/supplements.
      4) Brady has done it all over the years with a revolving door of players - he was able to do that many times b/c he's had the same defensive genius as a HC for his ENTIRE CAREER scheming to keep opponents from scoring points so Brady's very-often average or subpar performances in big games would be enough to squeak out wins in addition to relying on his kicker more than once to save his ass and win big games. Their SB win over the Falcons was a perfect example as was their squeaker against the Rams - If not for BB shutting down McVay's offense the Rams (who were averaging ~30 pts a game last season) would've scored far more than the 13 pts needed to send Brady home a SB loser - again. Montana never lost a SB so he was never embarrassed like that in a SB and Brady was NEVER as consistent or clutch as Montana in the biggest games of their lives despite the many advantages Brady enjoys. That's why many correctly and fairly label Brady the best qb of HIS ERA but not of all time. That's fair and honest. Add to all the above the lack of protective rules that hurt Montana until the very end of career and protected Brady during his entire career and my point is quite rationale and reasonable.

Fortunately I've had the benefit of actually watching, witnessing and being able to compare the great qbs from the 80's forward while you've obviously only watched Brady and can therefore only regurgitate what other (biased?) people tell you to believe. You're a mouth piece for people you don't even know. I would invite you to watch Montana's victorious NFLCGs and SB wins and conclude that Brady is better than him in those biggest of moments.

      Trev Mac Month ago

+Ret1173 I'll remind you of this - there are about 100 legitimate web sites on the net that you can *google* that list the greatest Quarterback of all time and i have yet to find one that has Montana over Brady as the greatest ever. The point you were initially trying to make in an insidious way is that Montana is better than Brady. So many of these sites are based on opinions from the NFL's top writers, coaches, players, football historians and have *impeccable reputations* Secondly you don't know *JACK SHIT* about what's allowed Brady to play as long as he has. There's dozens of variables why he lasted so long (his diet and his 3 hour a day yoga routine among 2 of dozens) not to mention today's players are bigger and faster than ever before. In Joe's era they had one camera to study him, nowadays' they have 10 coaches and 20 scouts along with every bit of technology available to combat Brady's greatest *all to no avail* Brady has done it all over the years with a revolving door of players *72 different players have caught a TD pass from Brady (NFL record by far)* Hell if Brady had Jerry Rice for 8 years he would have all 9 Super Bowl *rings* he appeared in.
now go find me a site that list Joe ahead of Brady -- i'll start you off with one www.si.com/nfl/2017/10/27/nfl-top-10-quarterbacks-tom-brady-joe-montana-john-elway

I love all these comments about Joe wasnt good enough and Young beat him out.
Niners last 2 years as Joe as thier starter
    29-4 89 and 90 NFL MVP
89 had the greatest postseason any QB had in a postseason 146 QBR 11tds 0 int and left all three games early.
4th loss, he was beating the the Giants in the NFCC when he got knocked out Young had nothing for them, they lost.
Took young years later to win a ring with alot more talent. He couldn't do it with Joe's team.
Age and how much does Joe have left in the tank compared to a younger Young was the factor. Not ability.

Montanas playoff stats from 1988-1990. 8 games. 161-230. 2089 yds. 22 td. 2 int. %70 com. 9.0 avg/att. 130.0 qb rating. And those are post season stats in the 80s. Not drew brees stats in the first 8 games in 2018.montana would have probably capped off the 3 peat if not for marshalls hit.

I crack up at how the media pretends that Young is on Montana’s level because of that one SB that the ‘94 Niners won, against the fluke ass San Diego Chargers...gimme a break. Montana got to a Niners team that was TRASH in ‘79, and was the lynchpin that led them to 4 SB’s (could’ve been 5 if not for my NY Giants in 1990 😉😉). Then he goes to the Chiefs and almost takes them to the SB in ‘93

Bu the fact of the matter is Young won the Super Bowl in S.F and Montana never did get K.C to the Super Bowl. As for *almost* got K.C to the Super Bowl - they lost the WILD CARD game to Miami December 31st, 1994 coming off a mediocre 9-7 season.. The year before January 23rd, 1994 Montana was pathetic in the conference final against Buffalo 9/23 123 yards 0 TD's 1 INT QB rating 39% . Hey pal next time you try and misinform or exaggerate a players worth always remeber there are guy's like me around to *Correct* you.. And all this is mute anyways because both Young & Montana pale in comparison to Brady. (almost takes them to The Super Bowl ,i'm still laughing at that B.S) ha ha ha

As far as the "battle" of who is better is b/t Montana & Young let's just say this. Whenever the discussion of the GOAT QB is concerned, I *NEVER* hear Steve Young's name mentioned.

Christopher G. To be fair Steve was 30 when he started starting regularly. He does that at 25. Maybe he’s heavily involved in that discussion. Personally I think Montana is better. But I like watching young more.

+John Re Rice took both of them to the HOF. End of story. You don't need a great quarterback to get to the superbowl. Rex Chapman is a good example.

    • John Re
      John Re 2 months ago

+Robert Staffod im not saying that rice wasnt great. He was the best. But you dont dominate 3 superbowls because you carried your qbs. It was a team effort. The great qb is more important than the great receiver. Joe won champioships without rice.steve didnt have rice in 1997 and still went 13-3 and led the league in qb rating. Im not knocking rice. Im just replying that you said rice took them both to the HOF. That is just plain wrong.
