Thirty days of going vegan is in the books and I have to say this one was a bit more difficult than keto for me as it took me out of my comfort zone. This Vegan 30 day challenge certainly surprised me in several ways and at the end of the day, I think it is a reasonable diet to follow as long as it's planned adequately.
If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Doctor Reacts Series & Responding to Comments so please submit more names of shows/episodes & questions you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

@Madeline Fleming both, take your body weight and times it by 12 that is the calorie intake to maintain your weight. To gain more weight increase that number to loose weight decrease that number. Be proactive in following your food groups and portions. Avoid fast food, they tend to make your diet more protein dependant. Try to remember too much of a good thing is bad for you; If your use to 6 or 7 cups of coffee try to cut back to 1 or 2. It's the same with alcohol if you go out occasionally, energy drinks, sugar and salt. This is just basic advice I've learned, diffinatly consult a nutritionist or dietitian for more in depth meal plans, because if you find that something is not working out as expected they will help you adjust it to fit you because everyone is different.

Great that an MD/DO talks intelligently on nutrition. Unless something has changed in the curricula, you did not receive any nutritional instruction in medical school. For health reasons I’ve been WFPB for a number of years, mostly vegan, agree that just cutting out the animal products does not make one healthy. My transition was more gradual, over six months to a year and a half, replacing processed foods added oil and dairy with plant-based options, so my bloating was minimal.

This video would have actually been educational if done properly. Planned as any parson who goes through a healthy transition. Also, research man!U are a docto for God's sake! And the fact that u can't seem to understand that FIBER was ur problem when it came to gas.... well.... Despite that, It is good to see a video talking about veganism, I just wish it contained more information.

Erick-Emil Szelitzky It does not matter. If he films a video like this he has to research because not all people know that doctors know very little about nutrition and take for granted that he knows what he is talking about. It is the responsible thing to do.

“A vegan diet CAN be a very healthy diet....The reason I put that word “can” in there: You can follow a vegan diet with vegan burgers, with sugary sodas, with gummy candies, still be vegan...and that’s not really healthy, right? And I have to’s not the ONLY healthy diet out there!”
    THANK YOU, Dr. Mike!!!

Just watched 3 straight "diet test" videos from doctor mike...all 3 of them seem to have the same overall review in the end.
    1) there are benefits and down sides to all of them
    2) planning meals is key
    3) short term is good, long term isn't sustainable
    4) proper balanced diet with lower carb intake is the way to go.

I’m a vegetarian who is trying to become vegan but like no lie I already have a lot of respect for you because you’re a great doctor but the fact that you went vegan for 30 days not wanting to do it is amazing😂 Most vegan junk food is not healthy just like regular food (a vegan burger is not much better than a regular one) so it’s important to eat a lot of raw stuff or else you just work against yourself

I read that the Mediterranean diet's founding study (?idk what to call it) was retracted after it was revealed that some of the data was collected in a comically bad way. So now it's just, like, a regular diet and not particularly special.
    Is that accurate?

Only one diet proven to reverse coronary heart disease.
Of course you can eat an unhealthy vegan diet, which is why to be healthy, I recommend to my friends who want to be healthy a whole foods plant based diet, supplementation of B12 and D3, and monitering your nutrition closely to make sure you are hitting all your macros and micros(which everyone should do anyway).
Of course, I'm an ethical vegan, so Im fine with people if they want to eat junk food all day if they want, so long as they don't consume animal products.

  • Dominick Douglas

Hello Doc, two things that might offer an interesting nutritional perspective!
    1) You mentioned gas+bloating and, as someone who has been vegan for 3 years, I struggled similarly. One thing that really helped me was consuming more fermented foods! I read that the fermented products help break down all the fiber. Adding kombucha, kimchi, and other probiotic foods helped me a lot
    2) From a nutritional stand point, you didn’t mention a lot about macronutrients or vitamins+minerals. I think it’s important to discuss this b/c eating proper carbs, fats, and proteins is something everyone can benefit from. Crackers, cereals, and chips aren’t typically nutrient dense BUT dried fruits, nuts, and oats (I love quinoa flakes) are much better ways to get flavor and nutrition out of your snacking. ((they are also just as quick))

No such thing as a vegan diet. Veganism is ONLY about animal cruelty and exploitation. You are talking about a plant based diet. I have been plant based 33 years and don't identify with the foods you ate. I don't eat rice or pasta, never get bloated and love all the delicious food one can eat. Stews filled with everything under the sun, cottage pie, lots of roasted veg in the oven and covered with a plant based white/ cheese sauce, burgers home made, stir fries, portobello mushrooms, the list goes on and on if you want to use your head and find the recipes. Why should it be a problem eating out? Just pick out the things you can eat and get on with it and congratulate yourself no animal suffered for you. Being a doctor it surprised me you don't mention about what animal fats do to the arteries . As far as i know dietary cholesterol is a no go health wise.

Vegan here.. not a doctor but i get very gassie as well. I belive its fiber plus a more atractive enviourment for you Intestinal fauna do to the lack of meat and dairy. Best trick I ever found was eating asafoetida. You can buy it in Indian food markets and cook it with you beans, lentils or even your scrambled tofu! it's a gas killer!! just a tip!
