Andrea (the lab manager) is awesome.

I must confess. Any "wingeing" you hear from Brady Haran about how long this collab took is 100% true. We filmed this 4 years ago (!). He's bugged me to publish it every two months or so, so as a way to express my sincere apology I'd like to humbly request that you go watch his video and consider subscribing on Objectivity. Also, if you do so, please leave a comment about how it was worth the wait and he should quit his wingeing. Here's his video. Hey I’m being 100% straight up on this because I don’t know so I’m hoping someone who does cares enough to answer this for me & I’m sure I’m not alone. So the only thing I’ve ever heard about moon rocks was the report about a head of some country receiving one as a gift or what & it turned out to be petrified wood. Now I’m sure there is an “official story about that. Anyone care to enlighten me on that please?

    • seigeengine
      seigeengine 3 days ago +1

The petrified wood was never claimed to be a moon rock by anyone who would actually know. Sorry for some of the rough answers around names and the like, I'm going off memory here.
What happened was around the moon mission tour (the USA paraded moon landing astronauts around the world), an American ambassador (his name was something like Widdendorf) gave the (at the time) ex-Prime Minister of the Netherlands (William Drees I think) a gift of some petrified wood, likely from his home state (Arizona, known for petrified wood).

This is definitely not the moon rock samples NASA gave out (at the order of the President, not because they wanted to) to the Netherlands (as well as a ton of other countries, and the US states/territories). We can tell that because the official moon rock samples were absolutely tiny, in the area of a gram of material, and it was encased in resin/epoxy/I don't remember the exact material, and mounted on a wooden placque, whereas in contrast the petrified wood is on the order of 100 grams, and was just a rock. We also know this because the official moon rock samples were given to the Queen of the Netherlands, not to a former Prime-Minister. We also know this because they still know where those moon rock samples are (I believe they're on display in a museum).

After the former-PMs death, his family found the rock with a card given out during the Apollo tours, assumed they were related, and donated them to a museum. Not a science museum... an art museum. The museum put them on display without really ever verifying they were real. Eventually somebody with a brain both realized something was up and managed to convince the museum to test the rocks, and they finally realized it was just petrified wood.... queue news articles and moon landing denialists rejoicing because they never learned how to reason correctly.

So what happened when someone broke the rule and took one of those rocks in thier barehand and went outside and set it on the dirt? Why all the paranoia, is the moon innately poison? Seriously, what would happen?

    • seigeengine
      seigeengine 10 days ago

@Gourd EarthVines No, that's not what that means. Contaminated just means "stuff from Earth got on it." We don't want that, because then when we study the rocks, we might struggle to tell what's Earth stuff and what's Moon stuff.

    • Gourd EarthVines
      Gourd EarthVines 10 days ago

@seigeengine oh I get it! Thx. But I still wonder how anyone knows our planets atmosphere is regarded as Contaminating ....did someone get sick holding a rock? ...then what about those guys beards being uncovered? Not being smarta**, I just wonder why a moon rock is so different from an earth rock..

    • seigeengine
      seigeengine 10 days ago

      No, for two reasons:
      1. The footage was not taken on film. The lost footage was taken from the signal sent back to Earth wirelessly.
      2. The footage isn't really lost. It's just the original recordings that were. The signal was split and half was broadcast around the world... which we still have.

    • Gourd EarthVines
      Gourd EarthVines 10 days ago

@seigeenginethx, of course, good point. But I'd like to use one rock only and study what it does in a controlled area mixing with earth rocks. I find it hard to imagine no scientist has claimed to have done that. We use titanium in our bodies commonly in medicine and I've heard the moon is alot of that element.....Well, I better just go get a Degree and join the privately funded groups that don't have to tell all.🙂 There was a statement made that NASA " lost" original film footage and such. Do you believe that?

    • seigeengine
      seigeengine 10 days ago

Nothing. The reason isn't because they're dangerous, but because the more contaminated they are with Earth-stuff, the less useful they are as research material.
For a very simple example, imagine a researcher wanted to see if there was evidence of life on the Moon in those rocks.... you'd want to make sure life hadn't gotten onto them here on Earth, or that ruins the study.
