How Formation Flying Works (feat. the Red Arrows!)

  • Published on Mar 14, 2018
  • Thanks to the RAF, Rolls-Royce, and the Red Arrows! Go visit their Starrship project, it's the reason I got to do this:
The Red Arrows are the Royal Air Force's aerobatic display team - the best in the world. They fly Hawk T1 jets, powering through the sky at hundreds of miles per hour, pulling high-G maneuvers with just a few metres between their wingtips. Here's how they do it: and part of it's a skill that you probably already know.

Interesting, I've been to air where they've broadcast the radio chatter and it sounded so odd, but I never found an explanation to now of why.

I kinda have a problem with things because there are people like myself who are working hard everyday so one day we can become a pilot for the RAF and apply for the Red Arrows. Then there are people who don't have a direct obsession with the Red Arrows who get to fly with them.. I know it isn't sponsored and Tom worked with Rolls Royce but so what?

If I were lead pilot and commander precision flight, here is how I would do all training manoeuvres.
We all gather in a circle, I have my fist out in the centre, #2 places his open hand upon top my fist, #'s 3-6 repeat the sequence.
Upon the inflexion of My VOICE in Their earphones, I give counts 1..2..3..4..5.. The same time I move my hand in any direction, the amount of force at 1 in My voice at 1 is the same amount of movement and force on controls is what they should expect from my next manoeuvre.
Therein doing the same input to controls at the same amount pressure I am going to do.
Testing of equipment prior to flight will adjust needed differences, and ensure we each commit to the same exact manuver at the the exact same time..correct?

I know in 4 months late, but if you see this tom, next time you can, check out the blue angels in america (particularly fleet week in San Francisco) they are amazing and on a similar if not higher level than the red arrows

Yeah it is a bit biased as the Blue Angels fly at a minimum of 18 inches apart. They also fly at a maximum speed of 700 mph during airshows.

Correction, the blue angles are the best. The red arrows are second.

I wonder how their skill levels compare to the US Navy Blue Angels and the USAF Thunderbirds? Are there international air show competitions, and do expert critics rate the various demonstration units against one another?

Chamber music playing might actually be good training for this. "Holding the bank, Now" is a metrical articulation in triple time. It gives a subdivision, so that all musicians can "breathe" and come in together. It's almost a form of mind reading. Americans don't sing the way other cultures do, and it limits "work rhythm."

Why does it seem like British people put 72% percent of their energy into talking about how brritish things are the best, and the remaining 28% into saying other things are bad compared to British things
