Just saw it in Shanghai yesterday. Incredibly touching and the depiction of China and Chinese family relationship are almost uncomfortably real. Cast's acting is pretty awesome too. Awkwafina did not disappoint.

My family hid that from my grandma as well, this is so emotionally resonant. I’m pretty sure my grandma knew what was going on, but she didn’t say anything about it until she passed away, and we didn’t tell her neither. Maybe something only Chinese understand, sadly beautiful.

this really hit me hard, especially when he said "you think that one's life belongs to themselves. in the east, a person's life belongs to a whole. family." and it reminded me of how my grandfather died last year and we never told my grandmother who was also dying. i don't think we told her she was dying either. she died shortly after him by a few months, both died at home.

I recently heard that my grandmother has malignant cancer that was from bladder tumour. Thought it was removed okay but looks like it became worse. I'm in Australia now but soon I will be back in Korea with my mum to visit before granny becomes very.. ill. Unlike this movie, mine can't walk or has full orientation like that granny. I know she is old (83), always on the bed, needs a wheelchair or at least a walker.. but never thought that she won't be with me until I actually achieve something or get my degree. Here I am worrying about how am i going to pay university fees, what to wear, what to buy and when to meet up and party.. I wish it's all a lie. I'm not ready for this. I won't be able to watch this movie now or for awhile but when it's time I would happy to watch and let it go.

Chinese Americans are the only people who can portray other Chinese Americans realistically, free of stereotypes and other bullshit. This goes for other groups too. This is pretty impressive, and also why we need more Asian American media created and directed by Asian Americans and not other people.

At the end when grandma says "傻孩子“ she meant "silly child" not "stupid child".
Maybe this is city folk thing, when my grandma and grandpa were going to pass, they wanted their caskets made well before hand. When my grandpa fell, he didn't pass, nor did he for many years, but he kept his casket in the spare room with the peanuts and flour. Same with my grandma. We believe death is just a part of life.
Side note: My grandparents were farmers, peanut farmers. From a more rural part of China.

Omg, yes. This is real. My grandma had cancer a year ago, my whole family, my mom and all her siblings hid it from her, me and my newly wed husband fly back to China today visit her because “we just got married, wanna she met my husband”. The truth is we thought it would be the last time I ever seen her. She is still hanging in there but she still has no clue she has cancer.

My best friend from high school is Chinese-American, and this exact thing happened when her Grandfather was dying. I was 14, and I didn’t any reference level to understand why her family was keeping it a secret, and my friend couldn’t explain beyond “it’s just how things are done”. I’m floored by this movie already. I hope to have a better understanding of what her family must have been going through.

To everyone who talks about lack of Asian representation under this trailer, I have one question: WHERE YOU LIVING UNDER A ROCK THIS PAST CENTURY?
One of the reasons I noticed I was gay was Jason Scott Lee’s abs, Bruce Lee is an international icon, Pokemon, Naruto and Dragon Ball took the world by storm, you will have to search hard to find anyone who doesn’t know who Godzilla is, Hong Kong cinema had a big influence on what you would call “Western Cinema” action, God knows how many people quote the Art of War, Lao Tzu and Confucius, Sushi is all over the world, K-Pop is popular, Japan and South Korea export their pop culture and their movies become more and more popular, East Asian Yaoi and BL movies and shows influence other queer communities, Japan is a G8 country, China, North and South Korea are time and again in the news, Indonesia is rising, my city is brimming with Vietnamese food, Thailand is known all around the world and do I have to go into detail on Sriracha and instant noodles? Shall I go on? Because trust me, there is more where that came from.

Love this! Lemme add a lil bit of cultural nuance to the line at the end, where the grandma says 'stupid child', since it impacted me the most!
This comment might just get buried in the sea of comments, but thumbs up if feel like others would appreciate this explanation.
While the line 'Stupid child' might confuse non-native Chinese speakers and seem like an insult, but it can't be further from the truth.
'Stupid child' or ’傻孩子‘ is a saying that is commonly used by elders towards young children in an affectionate way. It's actually used when kids behave in a naive or innocent manner and the elder wishes to express their affection towards their innocent behavior.
While the word '傻' can be translated into 'stupid', it's proper meaning is perhaps closer to 'a lack of knowledge', which is why it used towards children when one does something innocent or naive.
There's an extra significance to this too since in Chinese culture, people frequently prefer express their emotions through subtext, and very rarely directly use the words 'I love you' and such. When the Grandma refers to Awkwafina's character, who's no longer child, in that way, it can also be interpreted as Grandma saying 'You will always be my baby' or 'I love you as just much as I did, after all these years'.

I was so moved by this trailer. I appreciate the fact that this trailer reflects how truly complicated family dynamics are in Asian culture.
