Wingwalking Isn't What It Used To Be, And That's A Good Thing

  • Published on Sep 24, 2018
  • Back in the 1920s, wingwalking claimed lives. Daredevils would move around on the top of a plane's wings, in mid-flight, often without any harness or any safety line. Maybe they'd be able to clip onto something during takeoff and landing, but maybe not. There are still a few of those true daredevil wingwalkers out there in the world, but in the 21st century... it's usually a bit different.
Thanks to the team at Aerosuperbatics Wingwalking: (this isn't sponsored, and I paid for my flight).

If you're wondering why I say that "standing up in the wind" is one of the most strenuous things I've done: turns out my g-tolerance standing is even lower than when I'm sitting down. Things got a bit... fuzzy for me during one of the 2.5g pulls.

Jetpacks are equally as exhausting! Most people have had enough afer 15 minutes tops. I figure it's the muscle tension.
Interestingly, I found a jetboard to actually be less strenuous!

In that case I wouldn't recommend going on some of the more intense roller coasters. Most of them you should be fine for the most part, but a few would definitely cause you to 'gray out'

Interesting that Aerosuperbatics straps you onto the wing before you go up-- The one I just did, I climbed up onto the wing once we were ~3500 feet in the air. Definitely a thrill either way, but much more of a mental and physical challenge having to climb out there! I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

It’s funny, because despite all the safety measures they employ for this, roller coasters are still much safer (and much cheaper to ride), yet for some reason a lot of people are still scared of them 🤷🏿‍♀️

If looking for another aviation-based thrill ride, try taking a ride with a crop duster.
