@Philip DeFranco I live in the next town over from Newark, Bloomfield. And these areas are super tiny. You can pass through to the next town in 5 min. We get our water pumped from the same source traveling right though Newark. We are also affected. We get the notices and we are using the filters. As for this VMA story. I live 5 minutes away from this and did not hear a peep. No celebs speaking. Protests must have lasted only a couple hrs as this made no impact among the community at large. It would seem that all the outrage is online and while numbers of responses may look large they account for 0 action in the real world. This all stems form an infrastructure problem that has gone ignored far too long.

It's been a known thing in Newark to never drink the city water because it wasn't clean. This is almost 30 years ago.

    FEARSE1 3 months ago

Hey Philliip, I love your face but i want to say one thing on one issue in particular. The water issue in Newark and New Jersey is a big problem.... but associating Taylor Swift's comments with the current water crisis is misleading. Taylor does not support NJ in her weak Cali speech. She haS NO RIGHT voicing her bs disconnected voice on America's issues. Sorry Phil just my onion

    • FEARSE1
      FEARSE1 3 months ago

The sad part about this issue in that elected Newark officials won't fix Shit!!! As a NJ resident, I understand how my state works. The same bs politicians get elected based on nothing but party recognition. For example, Cory Booker came to office as a NJ rep but he has no understanding of the day to day problems "his" state has. what a shame

Protesting the VMAs seems a little counter intuitive because, it it's the city hosting the even then that means the city gets revenue and hopefully that revenue gets put into their current situation. But who knows, when you have fiscally irresponsible people running your town, you're usually fucked anyway 🤷‍♂️

I could say I feel for Newark, but I really don't. Because once that is done with I know the rest of NJ's problems will still never see the light of day and we'll be back to square one. *Also if you think Newark has lead problems, hooo boy wait till you see the rest of the country.*

my opinion with the johnson + johnson issue is that johnson + johnson shouldn’t have been found guilty. you can’t blame a company for people’s addictions. i know they can do shady things to encourage them but it’s still the addicts fault.

Corporations are not innocently kind merchants. They profit from addiction and they have no remorse about keeping that going. I personally think Oklahoma did the right thing, especially since it is likely that J&J profits from billion-dollar tax loopholes, and the state ends up picking up the tab on the consequences of addiction and addiction-based crimes. Plus 72Mil is pennies to them.

mean way. In a curious way. It’s like looking at all the students and wondering who’s had their heart broken that day, and how they are able to cope with having three quizzes and a book report due on top of that. Or wondering who did the heart breaking. And wondering why. “Books: a beautifully browsable invention that needs no electricity and exists in a readable form no matter what happens. “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. “A question that

Newark is basically my sister town. (I’m from Kearny NJ). I’ve always noticed that at my grandparents house in Newark that they always had a water filter for their sink but the never drank the water. I found out that the water was very contaminated and it pisses me off. My Great Grandparents we’re constantly sick and now knowing the water was not safe for them makes me severely disappointed in my sister town. Can’t believe they held the VMA’s there instead of helping those who live there.

When you include the fact that Bret Stephens cc'd the Provost, I'm generally inclined to cry, "foul". It's one thing to put him on blast via a private email, another to tattle to his Boss...
EXCEPT!... for the fact that the professor teaches media relations. The way he randomly trash talks a reporter he disagrees with, comparing them to vermin that borders on a disease *in a public forum* is actually relevant to his profession.
And, no, the fact that Stephens has spoken out against safe spaces and in favor of "unrestricted speech" does not materially undermine how he responded to the criticism. He did not make the case that the professor should not have been allowed to say what he did. He simply challenged him to get to know him as a person and then see if he still saw him as a parasite after meeting him outside the digital cesspool that is Twitter.
It's a close call, but point to Stephens. I think you failed to appreciate the professional context, Phil. It made your coverage pretty slanted, but you're entitled to your opinion. File this one under, "reasonable people can disagree".

I dunno about the bedbug tweet take. Everyone mutes and ignores. The rhetoric just escalates slowly to compensate. Ignoring is a short-term solution to a growing problem until the internet actually becomes unbearable.
I'm more ok with people calling out others on the stuff they say on twitter.
Successful calling out needs some fine-tuning, but the approach would be understood better if it wasn't so widely ridiculed to attempt it.

    • Chris Hodgson
      Chris Hodgson 3 months ago

@Emily An Sure, but I live in UK, so there are likely US persons who have stronger views on the subject.

Big companies manipulate what they can to get people to buy their product. They try to skim the line of the law, rather than passing it.
Arguably legality interpretation does shift over time as we gather new prospectives and information, but there's also an argument it has to, and costs for going against expected morality with that new information should be borne where possible.
