Allen Iverson stepping over Tyronn Lue in the NBA Finals requires a deep rewind | 2001 76ers-Lakers

  • Published on Mar 25, 2019
  • The 2001 Philadelphia 76ers were doomed. They were a very good team with league MVP Allen Iverson as their leader, but their Finals opponent, the Los Angeles Lakers, was a multi-championship powerhouse in the middle of of a historically dominant playoff run.
But just for a moment, the Sixers gave the Lakers a scare. Despite Shaquille O'Neal's dominant performance, Game 1 in LA went to overtime, and with time winding down, Iverson faced down Laker backup Tyronn Lue with a chance to put the Sixers up 4 and all but cement the upset victory.
This episode of REWINDER takes you into that moment -- one of the most iconic in NBA history -- and explains just how incredible, just how unlikely it was, thanks to the Sixers' recent history of big trades, big almost-trades, and innumerable injuries throughout a grueling playoff run.

I want to see Phil Jackson creating a triangle defense!! I wonder if it would be effective against three point shot.

How does Tyronn Lue go to sleep after that. That's a huge embarrassment. After he got dribbled, he feel then Iverson stepped over him of putting the ball on the basketball, ultimately winning the game for Philly. But I'm sure he's only comfort and consolation is that Philly didn't win a championship and Iverson never won a ring after. While he has two as a player (even though he was not a significant figure and role player in his team) and 1 as a coach. Which is incredible considering he didn't have a significant or successful career. I hope this memory doesn't haunt him last most think. I'm sure he's over that. He has three rings. He should be fine.

Iverson gets a bad rap for the "Practice? Practice!?" statement but people either don't know or forget his best friend had been murdered just days prior.
He'd been out dealing with that and came back the following day and the reporter was harping about him not going to practice.
His reaction was justified but the 2 second sound bite is the only thing that is ever shown.

Probably should did a rewind on the infamous practice interview. Iverson was sarcastically commenting on how he's here talking about practice when his best friend had just died. He said this during the press conference not too long after his rant - "I'm upset for one reason: 'Cause I'm in here. I lost. I lost my best friend. I lost him, and I lost this year. Everything is just going downhill for me, as far as just that. You know, as far as my life. And then I'm dealing with this. ... My best friend is dead. Dead. And we lost. And this is what I have to go through for the rest of the summer until the season is all over again."
