Allen Iverson stepping over Tyronn Lue in the NBA Finals requires a deep rewind | 2001 76ers-Lakers

  • Published on Mar 25, 2019
  • The 2001 Philadelphia 76ers were doomed. They were a very good team with league MVP Allen Iverson as their leader, but their Finals opponent, the Los Angeles Lakers, was a multi-championship powerhouse in the middle of of a historically dominant playoff run.
But just for a moment, the Sixers gave the Lakers a scare. Despite Shaquille O'Neal's dominant performance, Game 1 in LA went to overtime, and with time winding down, Iverson faced down Laker backup Tyronn Lue with a chance to put the Sixers up 4 and all but cement the upset victory.
This episode of REWINDER takes you into that moment -- one of the most iconic in NBA history -- and explains just how incredible, just how unlikely it was, thanks to the Sixers' recent history of big trades, big almost-trades, and innumerable injuries throughout a grueling playoff run.

Allen Iverson was a monster and a leader that did it his way in everyone loved him For that reason he never Caplan he never back down from a challenge or a fight. That's why he is so love and respected by everyone white or black. Some times people don't look at the bigger picture because if people did even more people would love Iverson he is a champion because what u see is what u get from him and everybody don't like that and that's why people don't respect that because he is real and a good person. And yes he had his bad moments and life we all do and thru all that he never stop loving his fam and teammates. Everybody wanted him to be like guys like ray Allen and peyton manning. Why would you want a person to lose his identity or change his way of life that help him get wear he is today. And that's why AI will always be champion and my mind.

Fun NBA stat: If adjusted to 36 minutes a game, Player A’s numbers in the 2018-19 season would be better than Player B’s numbers in his MVP season.
Player A is rarely included in lists of current top 10 shooting guards while Player B is regarded as one of the best guards of all time.
Player A averaged 20.0 points/5.4 assists/3.0 rebounds in only 26.6 minutes a game this season, while Player B averaged 31.1 points/4.6 assists/3.8 rebounds in 42.0 minutes a game in his MVP season, a difference of 15.4 minutes a game.
Their numbers both averaged out to 36 minutes a game are these:
    Player A: 27.1 points/7.3 assists/4.0 rebounds
    Player B: 26.7 points/3.9 assists/3.3 rebounds
And Here are the shooting splits:
    Player A: 42.5 FG%/36.1 3pt %/87.6 FT%
    Player B: 42.0 FG%/32.0 3pt%/81.4% FT%
    Player A is Lou Williams.
    Player B is Allen Iverson.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Say what you will but AI was the TOUGHEST man to ever play Ball. With his size you'd think he'd develop as an outside shooter type. While AI could hit the outside J he had ZERO issue driving the lane. Didn't care if Shaq was in his way he drove anyway. Threw his body around down there like he WAS Shaq or Duncan. Just fearless. Every time they knocked him down he jumped back up to let the big guys know he wasn't hurt. I'd love to meet AI and shake his hand just for that kind of inspiration.

maybe this'd help a little bit and let me say something. That match with the lakers, referees were the 6th on the floor for LA. Ty Lue (and letterally everybody on the yellow/purple team) was killing Iverson with tons of fouls that refs weren't calling at all. So that moment when AI steps over him.. let me say that was "justice"

11:26 - 18 years later, the Raptors' superstar would have another chance to bury a Game 7 buzzer-beater to win a semi-final series against the Sixers. To move on to face the Bucks in the ECF, with a superstar dynasty likely waiting in the NBA finals.
And while Vince Carter's shot bounced out, Kawhi Leonard's bounced once, twice, three, four, five times then went in.
Weird how history works. Fine margins.

I’m from L.A. and I’m a Laker Fan for life but I love Iverson too. Thing to note here is the Only reason Tyron Lue was even guarding AI was because no one else on the Lakers could, most notably Kobe. In fact at that time I was not a Kobe fan. Anyway Iverson was one helluva tough player. He had zero fear going inside against guys bigger than him and you had to respect that man. As for Larry Brown, he could have taken a note from Phil Jackson, yeah I know I know, but one thing Phil got right, was knowing his players. Big example was how Phil handled Rodman, he knew he could give Rodman room to be Rodman knowing when he came to play, he took no shorts. Brown was not that guy but had he been I think things would have been easier all around. Ok Back to AI making Lue look like garbage, what can I say it was Badass! I would have loved If The Lakers Traded Kobe for Iverson back then any day!
