  • Buy New Gas Tank - amzn.to/2SUyFAb
    New Fuel Pump - amzn.to/2AQPlRV
A complete DIY on how to remove and replace the gas tank, fuel pump, and fuel sending unit for any 88-91 Honda Civic or CRX. I purchased the tank from ebay seller "bobsclassicchevy" for $89.45 shipped. This was the cheapest price I had found online and the tank fit perfect.
This job can be a little time consuming but isn't too difficult and doesn't require any fancy tools. You will need to be able to remove the seat bottom cushion for the hatchback, wagon, and sedan or cargo box if you have a CRX but that is very easy. It took me about 7 hours total from start to finish and I took my time making sure I did not forget anything. The car started up on the first try and I did not have any problems at all.

Well, I did everything correctly, But when I ever prime the fuel pump; fuel spits out of that two-way valve [Part number: 17371-SF1-A01]. That red part on the tank. :/ Please help! anyway to fix this or bypass safely?

    • Alex Bassett
      Alex Bassett 8 hours ago

@Garage Built Hondas I figure put the issue, it was leaking out of the banjo bolt from fuel assembly. But now I'm trying to combat a no crank issue. I will be recharging the battery and replacing the main fuel relay.

Garage Built Hondas  10 hours ago

I'm not sure what's wrong here. But you can't bypass something that Honda engineered to work with the system. You may want to check you wiring using a multimeter.

I dont understand how the pump cant be removed from inside the vehicle??? Why do you have to drop the whole tank
Edit: ok now i see it. Sending unit is right on top, pump is on the back of tank. Thank you honda for making us work more than necessary

At 2:50 where you recommend to use the line wrench... is there anyway you can replace that fuel line? My brother used a regular wrench to disconnect that line and stripped that nut and then stripped the threads inside when he attempted to reinstall :(

Try a junkyard for replacing parts. I don't know if they sell them new any longer.

My return line that’s held on by the two 10mm bolts turns out I stripped the threads and I can’t seem to find a new one any where!! And it’s leaking Any help?

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  3 months ago

I don't know if they make them brand new. Best bet is a junkyard or find someone parting out an 88-91 Civic/crx.

I have an 88 civic that's leaking gas. I replaced the fuel pump gasket and sending unit gasket and lock ring. It's still leaking gas. All my lines are fine and the drop seems to be coming from the purge unit. Anyone know where I can get one?

If you have a P1456 code (not the gas cap) what else could the problem on the fuel tank what other evap components could of gone bad beside a actual fuel leak

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  3 months ago +1

Taken from the web "the code or DTC P1456 is caused by a leak on the tank side of the evaporative system, and the most common cause is a loose or missing gas cap, but it could also mean a leak in the fuel tank, or one of the tubes or hoses."

Hey man I just replaced my sending unit and the gas needle remained stuck in the 'full' position. I took off my cluster and upon attempting to remove the needle, I broke it....do you know what other cars are compatible for that part? I have an 88 SI. Looks like I need the part that attaches to the needle (looks like a copper yarn ball).

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  3 months ago +1

You'll need to find another 88-89 cluster and swap the temp/gas portion of it to you cluster.

  • Likeakidagain
    Likeakidagain 3 months ago

Ok I’m attempting to drop the tank to change the fuel pump but I’m stuck at step one, getting the plastic Phillips screws off the plastic cover ! Either the plastic screw stripped or the screw just spins. I noticed your vid skipped that part and the cover was magically off.

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  3 months ago +1

Hold the circular part with your finger, then use a screwdriver to get the plastic screw out.

Hello I was wondering if the civic wagons use a different fuel sending unit compared to sedan or hatchback thank you. Also would you advice getting one from the junkyard?

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  4 months ago

My guess I the they are the same, along with the fuel pump. A junkyard one might work just fine. I'd use it if it's inexperienced because those are easy to change. No dropping of the tank is required.

Thanks! You are a CRX pioneer. I'm waiting for that fuel pump to come today through Amazon Prime. Meanwhile, getting the fuel out of the tank is nasty. I tried to go old school and syphon it out with a hose and me sucking on the other end. Ended up with a moth full of gas ( I didn't swallow). headed Auto Zone for a Fuel syphon pump. Thanks again.

    • Roderic Fields
Roderic Fields 4 months ago +1

Update, It wasn't my fuel pump. It was the ECU fuse and ECU. I have a bad ECU so it wouldn't prime my fuel pump. Nonetheless, I don't have to worry about the fuel pump.

Huge fan of this tear down and it helped me last year with getting my Y49 to run again! I'm currently running issues with putting the Filler Neck Hose back on, and I found the part(17651-SH3-000)0 is discontinued so I'm having to use a universal fuel hose and cut it to size, but I'm still worried it's going to kink a little.
I think my next step is to completely drop the tank again and place the hose onto the tank and then left it back up and place it on the Filler Neck Pipe second.
    Awesome Channel!

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  9 months ago

Thanks James. There isn't much bend to that hose so I think you'll be ok with a universal one. As it's on there, it'll slowly conform anyway as long as you don't leave too much slack for it to bind.

Could you perhaps provide me part numbers for the right Fuel Pump for my 90 SI EF Hatch? I have the D16A6 motor and like you described, my hatch has the same issue with acting as though it has no gas when the gas gauge still shows about half way full. It's been driving me crazy for almost a year and I'm wanting to make sure all the part information I purchase is correct before taking it to a shop.
I've had a feeling it was the fuel pump for several months now that were causing the idle issues, and sometimes having issues starting on hot/cold days, and bogging at higher speeds.. but yesterday was the first time the fuel pump starting whining which made me ready to get everything needed to replace. Would love to do the whole gas tank as well.
Thanks in advance! Video was helpful

I just want to point something out that may help someone in the future, as this happened to me. I followed this video step by step and other various fourms to install my new 255lph fuel pump into my ef hatch, and after everything was set up and ready to go, the car wouldnt start. Doubting my mechanical skills i took everything apart again but still everything looked fine, at a complete loss and after hours of searching I came across a couple "no-start" main relay fixes, swapped the relay from my doner car and what do you know? Starts on a dime, what are the chances? Anyways, great informational video, a definite thumbs up from this guy!

How do I know if the ECU it's working. Do you think it's the ECU?

Garage Built Hondas. Thanks John. The ECU light only blinks once

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  2 years ago

+Justin Vargas probably not. Once you turn the key in the ignition, the led on the ecu will blink on/off real quick letting you know it's working.

When I bought it the old ladie told me that they haven't used it for almost 15 years.

+Justin Vargas Aw, have you checked to see if the fuel is coming out at the fuel filter or FPR? More than likely the gas has clogged up the lines from sitting for so long so you're unable to get gas to the engine. 😒

Hi Jon. I replaced the fuel pump and gas tank and still can't get it to star. What do you think it's wrong with my crx. The fuel pump and gas tank had rust all over.

Do you have to remove the gas tank just to change the fuel pump?

  • Justin Vargas
    Justin Vargas 2 years ago

I bought a 89 crx SI few months ago and I can't get it to star. it was on Non operation for almost 15 years. only has 73,000 milles. what do you recommend me to do. replaced the gas tank or just the fuel pump.

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  2 years ago

Full tune up and hopefully it should start up. You should crank the engine first to make sure it's not seized.

Jon Widmer. Thanks Jon. any other advice for the engine.

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  2 years ago

Justin Vargas I would save yourself the trouble and replace the tank and fuel pump. You'll more than likely have really old contaminated gas in there, and it may even be clumpy and have clogged some of the lines/hoses.

kendrick Lamar lol, if it doesn't need it, then I'd leave it alone. If your upgrading the pump, then a replacement of the tank would be best to do it at that time.

This is most insightful! I have a 2001 honda civic coupe, and after getting my map sensor and 02 sensors installed, I still kept smelling gas fart. Also I think that my front passenger side tire rim is bent or something...the car pulls to the right (whatever). Anyway, after watching this vid, I think I'll just buy another car and put my civic in the backyard until further notice. Thanks dude!! ★★★★

Where did you get your fuel tank? None of my regular parts suppliers have them. Also is it possible to shift the tank over a tiny bit? My new exhaust hits my gas tank on the front right corner the sound is irritating at cruising speed.

    • Garage Built Hondas
Garage Built Hondas  2 years ago

I bought it off of eBay. It was around $90 shipped from a seller in Phoenix. Someone posted in a comment below that he doesn't sell them anymore though but that was a while back. There really isn't any room to shift it over. It kind of fits in one spot. You might get away with like 1/2" possibly.

why did you opt for the Airtex FS121 fuel strainer instead of the Delphi FS0083? I'm aware both work, but just curious. I'm assuming because you could return the Delphi, but not the Airtex? Also, where are you located, if you don't mind my asking? Thanks for the great video.

I've used both. Couldn't tell the difference. Both work perfectly fine for any normal fuel consuming needs.

    • Seth Byers
      Seth Byers 11 months ago

Will the Airtex FS121 work just as well as the Dephi FS0083? I've got the FS121 in the garage, but you used the Delphi, which looks larger, so I don't want to put the FS121 in and have to swap it out later.
