Dear friends and followers, in this video I´ll explain how to fill out your pilot´s logbook.
The pilot´s logbook is a key element in your career on becoming an airline pilot. If you want to apply for any flight job, the employer will ask you how many hours have you flown, to assess how much flying experience you´ve had in the past. Nowadays, there are of course all sorts of Apps to record you flight hours, but I highly recommend that you stick to old fashion way and write down your hours in a proper pilots log book.
So enjoy the video, and I´ll go through each column step by step!
All the best and have fun collection you precious first flight hours!

Hello capt Joe, thank you for the video.. it’s really of big help. So I have the same logbook and I am a bit confused logging my simulator hours, I’m currently training on the ATR 72-500 so we have been doing 4 hrs where by 2 hrs of Pilot flying and 2 hrs pilot monitoring and in this case we swap seats. So how do I log the hours?

Craig Kollai make sure you have backup. Elogbooks exist, but it’s best to have any backup rather than no backup

    Dear Joe,
if I am a student flying with my instructor but i am the PIC, should I entry this info in Dual or Pilot-in-comand?? also the total flight time is from chocks off to chocks on or from take off and landing??? thanks

    • A2DJP
      A2DJP 3 months ago

If you are with an instructor, then it will always be a dual flight.
However, if the instructor is just a passenger (ie not giving you any instructions or taking control) and you have a pilot's license (ie not on student privaleges) then yes you can put that as PIC

As far as I know, a pilots logbook is a very firm legal document. I have a friend who was accused of a crime and his pilots logbook exonerated him. It showed him actually in the air with another pilot at the time the incident occurred. It turned out the actual perp had the same name but was spelled differently, but the cops didn't know that and picked him up. Now, he could have explained it in other ways, but the logbook was instant off the hook.

Paper can be lost or damaged too, always have redundancy. For something this important three copies in different locations and manually synchronize each of them once per week. For digital an automatic backup should not be set to touch all copies, if A is erased or corrupted you do not want it automatically over writing B and C with bad data and if the sync from A to B is corrupted you want C untouched. At least one of them should be held offline and fully copied to new media once per year to avoid bit rot issues.
In short for paper or digital verify B is synced and safely stored before moving to C, and keep B and C separate at all times and not in the same building because of fire, flood, robbery....

  • palonero

In column 5, you only have to mark the SE or ME with a check mark as per the example if the airplane is certified for single pilot operation. If you're filling up an entry for an a320 flight, you DO NOT have to mark the multi-engine checkbox. You can see that clearly in the book's instructions, where there's an entry for a flight made on a 747. Also, in a multi crew airplane, you only have to mark the take offs and landings that you made when acting as PF. Take offs and landings when acting as PM are not marked. Not making it up. It's all right there on the instructions found on the very logbook.

And 2 more things: 1) The landings field should mention only the landings you did as PF, not all the landings.
    2) Flight time night does not exclude IFR so you could fill both fields.

Pilots and truck drivers(of whom I am one)have a lot of similar paperwork. We in the US changed over to E-Logs at the end of 2017, but my company has us filling out a paper log in addition to the electronic one. The main reason is that our E-Logs can be glitchy at times, and a back-up is nice to have when the DOT-man wants to see our papers.

As a software engineer I can tell you that having a digital copy of your logbook is much safer, you can lose your physical logbook somewhere, but you can never kill a cloud service with a good architecture, that stores your data on many data centers around the world. Plus you can print out the digital copy from time to time and turn it into a physical copy.

Put your name on the front of the logbook. I had another pilot walk off with mine. Returned when he opened it up and realised it wasn't his. In fact the logbook would be better if it had a open window to the name line inside.

Shoeb Ansari flying an aircraft is really complicated. Therefore 2 pilots are there to share the workload.
And in terms of captain and co-pilot, the captain is the one who is legally responsible for the aircraft and its operation. The other pilot is the co-pilot.
