Voyager 1's Getting Closer to Earth Right Now

  • The Voyager 1 space probe is the furthest man-made object from Earth, and the fastest. But right now, it's moving towards us. Relatively speaking. At Mission Control for the Deep Space Network, inside NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, let's talk about why -- and about how to stay in touch with something so small and so far away.
More about the Deep Space Network: deepspace.jpl.nasa.gov/about/ - thanks to everyone there who helped make this possible!

Wouter Weggelaar There aren't. Even if you give up on trying to display Voyager at all, a normal-sized 8K computer monitor with Earth as a single pixel would be far too small to show the full scale.
If you try to show Voyager as a single pixel, you hit the point where building and powering puts your civilization somewhere above 1 but below 2 on the Kardashev Scale.

It's strange to think that in a billion years, assuming we haven't gone to go get them, or they suffered a random collision with something, the Voyager probes, the Pioneer probes, and New Horizons will still be puttering around the galaxy, thousands of light-years from Earth. I wonder how many analogous alien artifacts are also out there, just drifting forever...

I’m confused. I thought the two Voyager spacecraft went on their separate ways and Voyager 1’s orbit left the plane of the Solar System, leaving 2 to carry on. I’m sure that this happened more than 9 months ago so why leave it so long to upload what is, essentially, out of date info? Interesting nevertheless, thanks for sharing. Peter.

Wait a gosh darn minute! If the Earth is orbiting the sun at 30 kps and Voyager is travelling away at 17 kps, then how could the speed of light travel at the same speed in both frames of reference? That would mean that one of the variables of speed (distance or time) is different depending on the relative speeds of both objects! Distance is certainly fixed, so time must be different depending on the frame of reference!
Someone really should look into this!

cant we just put satellites in orbit of other planets to relay the messages back to us a little bit faster? Relaying them directly from a machine that's that far away hardly seems like a reasonable idea, try building a network of satellites instead around various planets.

Is the rate of universal expansion slow enough as to not affect this in any way?
edit: went and look and it is indeed faster than voyager's speed (I think; 67km/s compared to voyager's 17.2km/s) ...but is it relevant in our reference frame such that it affects what you mentioned here, I guess, is what I'm not sure about.

They should probably get Voyager 1 to turn around and come back. Otherwise the Predacon known as Megatron will steal the Golden Disc it's carrying, go back in time, and try to assassinate the original Optimus Prime asleep on the Ark and destroy all human kind with only Optimus Primal and a handful of Maximal explorers to try and stop him.

Should we try catching it if it gets close? Personally yes. We could investigate how the components aged which could be useful. We could inspect to see if it was tampered with. We could replay the golden record, to check for changes. We could rerecord it today and send out a new one. A revision, if you will. All sorts of cool stuff.

In my teacher's point of view, Voyager is a dumb idea because if it ends up in the hands of something that is warlike it just kills us. "Here's a map to our home world, please come kill us!" However, we'll all be dead from Global warming before it gets to another solar system.
