Nuclear Waste: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

  • Published on Aug 21, 2017
  • Nuclear waste poses a serious threat to public health if it's not stored in a safe place. John Oliver explains why the United States desperately needs to build a metaphorical toilet for all that waste.

Why not just shoot the nuclear waste into space? It’s not like we’re using the moon for anything useful. Never mind. 5:30 answered my question.

Meanwhile, nuclear power is the ONLY power source that complete accounts for all of its waste. Nuclear power has the lowest death rate per kilowatt hour of any other power source (yes, including soak and wind).
We don’t need to store it, we need to recycle it with fourth generation nuclear power plants. As climate scientist James Hansen said, it would mean that we wouldn’t have to mine uranium again for 1,000 years.

  • victor_Victor Jakubiak

Wait, didn’t you find the solution? You sell the waist uranium to arms manufacturers, they make bullies out of that, sell it to government who pays for it with taxpayers money, then wedge a war somewhere and fire it from tanks, plaines and machine guns is some other country. Everybody is happy and makes money out of that ( not taxpayers but they happy too to get it away from their backyards), instead of spending on storage.

Harry Reid is who Harrison Reid the corrupt gaming board member in casino is based on. You know the one who was banging hookers and taking bribes from the mob? He later became senate majority leader. Ohh America how we appoint the worst people to the highest positions.

The terrorists on 9/11 flew over Indian point power plant and I lived near there at the time and I am really lucky they didn't decide to fly that plane into Indian point instead. I would've been fucked.

7 million deaths a year from air pollution, or ~5 thousand deaths from radiation exposure, HMMMMMMM

  • Eclipse The Gambling Ocelot

Funny thing, if something goes wrong at one of these plants, Harry Reid should be considered a terrorist and punished as such. His actions prevent the safe storage of nuclear waste and indirectly would be responsible for any accidents arising from them not being stored

    Dr ROLFCOPTER! 12 days ago

Complete the breeder reactors and start using the waste until it is not active any more. Both France and Russia has experimental breeder reactors already.

How much scared can a Nation be to justify using such a huge piece of land such as US to be converted into a literal "Nuclear Zone" in order "to win" the Cold War?

    Just incase
Misinformation can be damaging so i thought id mention that at @0:58 to @1:08 the news reporter mentions 71 Kilotons of nuclear fuel rods that are the issue of nuclear waste, you will actually find with a bit of research that an estimate of 75%-85% of "nuclear waste" is actually protective equipment like PPE and gas respirators, tools, benches, concrete, housings and many other materials, its not hard for materials to become radioactive and succumb to the deffintion of "nuclear waste"

what if I told you we could safely and productively store nuclear waste that will also, by default, also benefits climate change a great deal... Breeder Reactors. it's a type of nuclear power plant that can run on the "spent fuel" at issue in this video. A breeder reactor running on the spent fuel in Illinois alone could provide 100% of our entire power grid for 750 years.... One out of the 50 states can give 100% power we need and do it 100% carbon free

There is a solution to this problem, which the USA abandoned in the 1950's. And now the Chinese are well ahead. Thorium Molten Salt Burners can literally burn this nuclear waste and turn it into heat and electricity. MIT Technology Review:

Nuclear waste can be reprocessed and used again. It’s just there is an executive order signed by former President Carter that prevents it from happening. France reprocesses their waste. Would be nice for John Oliver to have talked about that as a solution.

poverty kills. air pollution kills. waste from solar panels kills poor people who we ship the electronic waste too. nuclear is cheaper cleaner and safer if done right one football stadium full of waste is soo minimal its laughable that we think its a big problem having lots of cheap energy will save alot of lives and how many fucking people does the waste kill compared to people getting killed from repairing and maintaing wind mills

Now, imagine the mountain of coal ash you would have if you had not had nuclear power... all the nuclear waste from 40-50 years of operating 100 reactors fits in a football stadium, does even one year of ash from one coal plant fit in a football stadium? How many more people would have died from air pollution from that coal?
