Rescues underway in Oklahoma after tornadoes unleash massive flooding

  • Published on May 21, 2019
  • Rescuers pulled people to safety and ferried them through fast-moving floodwaters in middle Oklahoma after severe storms swamped the area -- and more severe weather will threaten a large portion of the central US as the day goes on. CNN's Ed Lavandera reports.

Our reservoirs were already high here from storms last month and the month before. They haven't been allowing the waters already built up to go to mitigate the amount of rain we've been getting. Which is actually not as bad as it's been in previous years. Hell, last year it rained hard for almost two straight weeks and we didn't see this.
Believe what you want, but I live here. I know what has been going on. CNN doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.

Yes. It was multiple thunderstorms and supercells. I think they just misspoke, or had a typo, or something. I don’t think anyone actually thought that tornados themselves caused the flooding. Mistakes happen.
We have been having heavy rainfall for days and the dams needed to be released which caused rivers/creeks to overflow. But just in general there has been inches of rain which have caused flooded roadways. The tornados were just another terrible part of the storm. All of it goes together. It has happened here before (look at the Tulsa flooding in 1986) but there is no one “cause”. It just happens and is very unfortunate.
Thank you for your concern, and I’m sorry if I came off harsh, but it seemed obvious that someone just made a mistake while putting together the video in a developing story.

    • Dutch American
      Dutch American 4 months ago

@eleanor decelle I’m sorry for your situation and hope you stay safe. Both tornadoes and heavy rainfall of this type are caused by severe weather, often referred to as thunderstorms. Tornadoes do not unleash massive flooding by themselves. It could be, however, that a tornado damaged levies, etc. which in turn caused the flooding. Is this what they are trying to say?

    • Eleanor DeCelle
      Eleanor DeCelle 4 months ago

Is that a serious questions?? It was the storms which brought tornados & RAIN. I live in Tulsa and go to college in OKC. The town where I grew up is underwater from the Arkansas river not being able to hold the water.

It was the storm, she probably misspoke. The huge line of storms brought tremendous amounts of rain and the mixtures of air currents (hot & cold temps) coming together in Oklahoma make the weather unstable & cause tornados.

I think it is obvious. This is not a trolling situation. What good does that do? My childhood hometown is flooded. Seems as though someone made a mistake while putting the video together in a developing, dangerous situation. Give a little compassion.
But if somehow you are ACTUALLY serious, rain is precipitation from clouds. Of course it’s not from tornados. That is just another part of the storm itself.

    • Charr Churl
      Charr Churl 4 months ago

Yep, this part of OK is very prone to flooding. It literally floods every year. We just couldn't quit getting hit by rain. Not to mention over the last 2 months our waters have been up and they didn't open the gates on the dams like they should've. These storms were nothing like we got a month ago, but it flooded like this.
This is due to them not letting the water go like they should've. This storm just made an already overfilled system fill up more.

Fake news, I live in ok. Prior to this recent storm, the Corp of engineering for keystone dam ordered people along the Arkansas river and flood zones to be evacuated. They evacuated. Then they released mega water from keystone.
Then this storm hit. There are flooded areas but we were forewarned.
Majority of Oklahomans take these warnings seriously. We prep before storm.
    It's not that bad.

    • H Pn
      H Pn 4 months ago

@Eleanor DeCelle I am speaking for myself. The situation is worst today vs when storm hit. Flood!
They have evacuated people living in flood zone along Arkansas river.
The Corp is going to release more water today. It's going to be intense.
Webber falls dam is evacuated too. Those barges hit the dam!
That one may be a catastrophic.
Pray hard those barges did not cause mega damage to dam.

    • Eleanor DeCelle
      Eleanor DeCelle 4 months ago

“It’s not that bad” is the MOST fake news thing I have ever heard. Speak for yourself and don’t minimize others’ problems.

    • Eleanor DeCelle
      Eleanor DeCelle 4 months ago

Please explain HOW this is fake news exactly? Besides the typo that tornados are causing flooding?
I live in Tulsa & have for 18 years. My mom grew up here, and all of my family back until my great-great grandparents.
There is actual flooding that was NOT prepared for. The dams had to be released because of all the heavy rainfall, yes, but many people did not know about it until the recent storm was happening. (Like me).
No one here said that none of it was seen coming. Just because you are safe and got information prior doesn’t mean everyone else did. Don’t minimize other peoples’ problems because you are fine and in Oklahoma. I may be in OK & be fine, but I know plenty of people that are NOT. I know people from my work that have recently just moved to Oklahoma that just saw hail for the first time! How would they be prepared for this? My friend’s apartment is flooded and she had no idea she was in a flood zone. So speak for yourself about being prepared and it not being that big of a deal.

"The Southern Plains Experiment in CLOUD SEEING of Thunderstorms for Rainfall AUGMENTATION (SPECTRA) Project was designed to study convective CLOUDS in the SOUTHERN PLAINS, specifically areas in TEXAS, southeastern NEW MEXICO and OKLAHOMA where advertent and/or inadvertent WEATHER MODIFICATION occurs.
A new TEXAS based CLOUD physics AIRCRAFT was equipped specifically as part of this project. The Southern Ogallala Aquifer Rainfall (SOAR) program... another useful tool during SPECTRA was the TEXAS regional mosaic IRaDS (Integrated Radar Data Services) WSR-88D Level II data. These National Weather Service (NWS) WSR-88D sites cover the TEXAS WEATHER MODIFICATION programs’ TARGET AREAS.
NEXRAD data is run through Thunderstorm Identification, Tracking, Analysis, and Nowcasting (TITAN) as a graphic user interface, enabling the radar meteorologist to examine the three-dimensional structure of echoing CLOUDS in real time. Individual echoes and groups of echoes can be tracked and their development and motion projected in time. Airborne Data Acquisition and Telemetry System on-board the research AIRCRAFT allows the radar meteorologist at each SEEDING TARGET to track the SOAR research AIRCRAFT on TITAN and vector the AIRCRAFT to regions of enhanced convection within the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) range of the telemetry system.
During the field measurement program (phase 1), the SOAR research AIRCRAFT was mostly deployed in targets of existing WEATHER MODIFICATION programs in TEXAS. This allowed the crew on the research AIRCRAFT to communicate with the project meteorologist at each WEATHER MODIFICATION site in TEXAS to obtain supplemental radar information to that available on-board the research AIRCRAFT.
SPECTRA is aimed at developing scientifically proven CLOUD SEEDING technologies for PRECIPITATION AUGMENTATION in TEXAS, southeastern NEW MEXICO and OKLAHOMA. “Proven” is to be interpreted in terms of the “proof of concept” criteria set forth by Silverman (2001;2003) involving physical and statistical evidence for SEEDING effects. According to Silverman (2003), the statistical evidence for RAIN ENHANCMENT by CLOUD SEEDING is strongest for HYGROSCOPIC SEEDING. Even then, he makes a cogent argument that the physical evidence for effects of HYGROSCOPIC SEEDING is lacking in some areas, especially as it relates to the conceptual models that have guided randomized HYGROSCOPIC SEEDING experimentation.
The SOAR effort and the SPECTRA program have been designed and implemented with these deficiencies in mind. SPECTRA's first priority is at narrowing the gaps in the physics of HYGROSCOPIC SEEDING, and it has done a significant first step towards that goal in Woodley et al. (2005). The plan aims for using the state-of-the-art tools to document the role of natural and ANTHROPOGENIC (human) AEROSOLS (pollution) on CLOUDS and PRECIPITATION in TEXAS and the effects of DELIBERATE GLACIOGENIC and/or HYDROSCOPIC SEEDING on CLOUD processes."
