The white pigment I use is an opaque watercolor - GOUACHE (Holbein)
I use it instead of my regular watercolor whites which are too transparent for my style of painting.

I've recently started to paint in watercolor again(I'd done it as a child, but not as an adult) and I've been struggling with blooms and hard edges where I don't want them. It looks like the key to avoiding them is working in layers and wetting my paper down before each layer, or working quickly enough so the paint doesn't dry on me before I have time to finish what I'm doing.

When you added yellow paint next to blue in the sky , why didn't you get green ?

    • Maria Raczynska
      Maria Raczynska  2 months ago

It depends how you mix it Rosena, when you mix them in a well directly, you can achieve green.. when I just add paint on a paper lightly they don't mix but it also depends on what watercolors you use, with student grade it doesn't work. It works well with Holbein, Winsor and Newton (I used to paint with them) professional watercolor.

great summary of some basic watercolor techniques..........when I first started with this medium, and still at times, it can leave so many artifacts, like blooms, etc. and become very frustrating............having a basic knowledge of why these things happen and what to do and not to do helps so much..............I need to practice so much more to hopefully improve my painting...........watching the videos and classes is great, and then you have to do it yourself, to get the feel of things I think.............love your videos!

I would love to purchase one of your classes. I’ve mainly used the PHMartin’s liquid, but I originally bought a bunch of Holbein Pans because I love watching you paint. I would like to try my Holbein pans again. I love how you can lift the paints, where Dr. Ph. Martin’s doesn’t lift well. Anyway, what class on teachable would you recommend for a somewhat beginner? I did already the beginner series.

Maria Raczynska  2 months ago +2

Hi, thank you so much ☺️🌸yes, it depends on paints but also paper, some are good for lifting up while some it's almost impossible. The combo I use Holbein and arches papers works pretty well. You may enjoy ocean waves class? or the Aerial view of the ocean class 🌸🤗A lot of my students love the butterflies and rose classes too.

    • Maria Raczynska
      Maria Raczynska  2 months ago

Hi Sonu, thank you so much 🌸☺️with lifting up it does depend on a paper, some papers are super easy to lift up while others easy to damage or not able to lift up, it's also a matter of when you do it.. you can do lifting up while the paper is still wet on completely dry🌸

There is also a fourth type of watercolor paper that is 100% cotton artist grade. Its called "Soft Pressed. Most companies do not make soft pressed but Fabriano Artistico Co still makes it. Jerry's Artarama carries it. I had some once and an artist friend of mine loves using it. PS, Botanical Illustration water-colorist will do a lot of dry brushing only they use the very tip of their brush slightly splayed out using feather like sweeps. Some do the whole painting in dry brush application. Awesome to work this way. Thank you for sharing. Your work just keeps getting more awesome.

    • Renee L. Marks
Renee L. Marks 2 months ago

@Maria Raczynska I tried it once several years ago and its actually a bit spongy. I guess that's why they call it soft. The paper is not hard surfaced like hot or cold pressed. Color lifts very easily on it so hardly and scrubbing needed. But if you have to scrub, it wouldn't take it very well. You cannot get it in blocks and they don't make it in the tablet pads anymore so I don't buy it.

    • Maria Raczynska
Maria Raczynska  2 months ago +1

Thank you Renee! Thank you for sharing. I did hear about "soft press" it's like between Hot Pressed and Cold Pressed but it never appealed to me for some reason to try it.. 🌸

Thanks! I've been wondering... I might dry brush gently on a tree trunk for an effect but can dry brushing or lifting paint hurt the softer watercolor brushes? Why would I use a "scrubber brush" instead of a regular brush to lift paint - I've seen the scrubber brushes for sale and I don't know if I should buy them - they're fairly inexpensive.

Hi Cassie, I have seen scrubber brushes by Silver Brush. They are so harsh I cannot imagine using them on Arches papers... they would ruin it in seconds, no idea what scrubber brushes are for?? yes, using a regular brush may hurt your brush while dry brushing but perhaps you can use an older brush you don't care about?😉🌹🌹
