I've been getting a lot of similar questions so I have created a Q/A on my website - all about watercolor PAPERS, pigments, taping down etc 😃www.mariamorjane.com and go to a BLOG
The white pigment I use is an opaque watercolor - GOUACHE (Holbein)
I use it instead of my regular watercolor whites which are too transparent for my style of painting.

This was an awesome tutorial! Thank you. I have seen many of your tutorials. I see Neutral Tint often. Is that like Gouache? I use mostly Windsor and Newton paints. Would I be able to find "neural tint" with that brand? You used it in your "Painting a Forest in Watercolor". I don't exactly understand why and what it does. And another question: Do you hate blooms? Seems pretty at times! Again. I am very grateful for your tutorials.

    • Maria Raczynska
      Maria Raczynska  Month ago +1

Hi Connie, thank you so much 🤗Neutral Tint is just another shade of great, another watercolor, if you don't have it you can just use Payne's Gray by WN for example, although most companies do have this watercolor pigment as well. I love blooms ☺️🌹It just depends on what I am painting. Blooms are beautiful.

Thank you Dear Sis this video is much helpful and it clears up all my doubts but I don't know what kind of paper we use because even the sellers doesn't know that , it's just a normal art paper , I think it is hot pressed there is not much texture . Will I get washing tape and masking fluid in online shopping website ????

great video and helpful tips.............question.......what types of painting do you think the Princeton Elite series are best for?............ie do you feel that they are best for detail work........and what do you think is the feel as opposed to say Princeton Velvetouch or Black Velvet Silver brushes........ie are they softer, stiffer, hold a lot of water, etc.........thanks for any advise...............also, do you think that they last longer than say the natural/synthetic blends of brushes?

    • Maria Raczynska

    • Maria Raczynska
Maria Raczynska  2 months ago +1

You know now Im thinking with all that detail work you are referring to like painting eyes ☺️🌹I recommend actually Escoda's Perla or Barroco Series, small sizes like 2/0, 0, 2 are really good for that kind of detailed work, they are perfectly stiff 🤗😍

    • CONSTELLATIONS
      CONSTELLATIONS 2 months ago

@Maria Raczynska thanks Maria for all the information...............it really is very helpful...........I'm thinking about getting some new brushes, and with all the brushes out there, it's hard to make choices.......and it's also expensive and even a bit frustrating...........I'm finding that to do a lot of the work, I need a combination sometimes........at least some stiffer brushes for small detail work, but some softer brushes for more spontaneous soft flowing work.........I've never used Heritage or Aqua Elite.........I do have some Velvettouch and Silver Black Velvet brushes.......sometimes if I've done some of the less detailed work, and then don't have the right brushes.......ie size, type, etc. for details.......such as eyes, etc. the whole painting can be disappointing and I just can't get the effect I'm going for..........ie too thick lines, difficulty getting around areas where I want the highlights and paper white to be preserved, etc............I will have to decide.........again, thanks some much for your very information answer.......have a lovely day Maria........it's nice and cool here in New York today.......I love this type weather........Autumn is on it's way.........hope you're enjoying the LA weather too!

    • Maria Raczynska
Maria Raczynska  2 months ago +1

Hi, thank you so much 🌸☺️🌹With brushes, today every brush company has similar types of brushes its just a matter of what they use to make that hair and handles. Princeton Aqua Elite (it used to be Elite) are good for painting anything, sea scapes, flowers, because the series has small round brushes and flat brushes. Their flats are stiffer and they overall are stiffer. Black Velvet are softer than Aqua Elite or Velvet Touch. Velvet touch are softer than Aqua Elite but they are still on a stiffer side. I used to use Velvettouch a lot for detailed work now I found myself using more and more for that Heritage. Black Velvet have pointy long end, excellent to paint animals and flowers and landscapes too. But they are softer so if you like softer like I do, those are great as well. They do hold a lot of water but Aqua Elite does too. The small Aqua Elite, Heritage, Velvettouch the less they can hold water because they are stiffer. For lasting, it just a matter of a company how they make their brushes. Generally Black Velvet last for a long time, Heritage too. Aqua Elite I go thru them much faster but I also paint with them a lot. Synthetic or Natural it doesn't matter, I'm pretty rough with my brushes overall 😍

I've recently started to paint in watercolor again(I'd done it as a child, but not as an adult) and I've been struggling with blooms and hard edges where I don't want them. It looks like the key to avoiding them is working in layers and wetting my paper down before each layer, or working quickly enough so the paint doesn't dry on me before I have time to finish what I'm doing.

    • Sabrina Hawk
      Sabrina Hawk 3 months ago

Cellulose paper also can also contribute to these issues because the water n pigment sits on the surface and causes pooling 100% cotton this happens a lot less. Try experimenting with your paper a lot times that’s the issue - the quality of paper is often more important than the quality of paint

When you added yellow paint next to blue in the sky , why didn't you get green ?

    • Maria Raczynska
      Maria Raczynska  6 months ago

It depends how you mix it Rosena, when you mix them in a well directly, you can achieve green.. when I just add paint on a paper lightly they don't mix but it also depends on what watercolors you use, with student grade it doesn't work. It works well with Holbein, Winsor and Newton (I used to paint with them) professional watercolor.

great summary of some basic watercolor techniques..........when I first started with this medium, and still at times, it can leave so many artifacts, like blooms, etc. and become very frustrating............having a basic knowledge of why these things happen and what to do and not to do helps so much..............I need to practice so much more to hopefully improve my painting...........watching the videos and classes is great, and then you have to do it yourself, to get the feel of things I think.............love your videos!

I would love to purchase one of your classes. I’ve mainly used the PHMartin’s liquid, but I originally bought a bunch of Holbein Pans because I love watching you paint. I would like to try my Holbein pans again. I love how you can lift the paints, where Dr. Ph. Martin’s doesn’t lift well. Anyway, what class on teachable would you recommend for a somewhat beginner? I did already the beginner series.

Hi, thank you so much ☺️🌸yes, it depends on paints but also paper, some are good for lifting up while some it's almost impossible. The combo I use Holbein and arches papers works pretty well. You may enjoy ocean waves class? or the Aerial view of the ocean class 🌸🤗A lot of my students love the butterflies and rose classes too.

    • Maria Raczynska
      Maria Raczynska  6 months ago

Hi Sonu, thank you so much 🌸☺️with lifting up it does depend on a paper, some papers are super easy to lift up while others easy to damage or not able to lift up, it's also a matter of when you do it.. you can do lifting up while the paper is still wet on completely dry🌸
