The often too-intense world of competitive gymnastics is the focus of this made-for-television movie. Courtney Peldon stars as Katie Bryant, an aspiring young gymnast who is willing do whatever it takes to make it to the top of her sport -- including suffering verbal abuse from her demanding coach, competing while injured, and intense dieting. Swoosie Kurtz stars as her mother Allison, who at first agrees to the rigorous training, but later realizes the dangers of her daughter's environment. Mom Allison removes Katie from her strict coaching program and helps her find training with a more positive approach.

I MUST SAY THIS RIGHT NOW!!! I AM SO SICK OF FUCKING PARENTS Just because a mother and father can afford a kid to train their spoiled rotten kid at an elite level doesn't suddenly somehow physically predispose that child to top notch rigorous training and discipline so yeah a coach does get upset at a teenager when they don't stretch before tumbling and hurts themselves or they eat a bunch of shit befoe a competition and it makes them sick the day of competition TRUST ME there is a reason and there is nothing a coach has shouted at a kid that could compare to what they would be called if they were in public or private school so all of these parents and former gymnasts saying " my poor baby was called dumb or stupid" its because they ARE oh and lets not forget that calls for a bad television show appearance bashing the coach...if the heat is too hot take your wimpy ass kid to a nun that coaches PERIOD!! you wanted this kind of life you walked into my gym i didnt ask you to come ´╗┐

Yeah well the Romanians falsified documents for their athletes too. Funny how everyone has a problem with the Chinese team winning the bronze in 2000 when the Romanians did the same thing in 1996. Ma Yanhong was another great Chinese gymnast I forgot to mention.

Then there's Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, Anya Hatch, Dianne Durham, Betty Okino, He Kexin, Fan Yilin, Yang Bo, Cheng Fei, I can keep going on. The best gymnasts WERE white up until the USSR broke up. I still don't see how ethnicity can make a better gymnast....

This movie is based on a NONFICTION book written by Sports writer Joan Ryan. Therefore they did do their research. The book recounts the lives of over 100 different athletes. They adapted that book into a made for television movie recounting the many different stories through one main character.

First of all, it's a movie, movies are fake (just like tv, ever seen Make It Or Break It?xD) Second, this was made in 1997, when both filmmaking and gymnastics weren't as evolved as they are now. I started doing gymnastics when I was 5, and when I was 12 (2002) I had surgery on my hip. Before surgery I was training at level A (most difficult). Afterwards it took me 6 years to learn everything over again, and by that time those same skills had dropped to level C or even D. Times change.

I think it's ironic that this movie is talking about the evils of gymnastics and the stunt double, Vanessa Atler, ended up being a victim of USA Gymnastics and bad coaches and a demanding press and the pressure to be perfect.

Well, some of it might be for drama and atmosphere and capturing the right effect, and I bet a lot of it is just for the sake of it looking right and good on film. I did a little bit of stage lighting in college, and it's mind-boggling sometimes what one light can do.

Perhaps but this movie is not too brutally harsh. The book was. And vanessa Adler left the sport with a rather negative experience. But the rest of the cast are gymnasts too.
