Trapped ring puzzle/trick IMPOSSIBLE (not really)

  • Published on Feb 3, 2014
  • ***And another addition:
Wow. Thousands of angry and offensive comments. So:
Comments relating to this video, relevant ideas, and constructive conversations will remain un-moderated.
But, because there is no reasonable, intelligent person who would concern him/herself with wasting time to make an anonymous analysis of a person like me, if you do make a comment about me, here is what you can expect:
    #1 Your initial (useless) comment.
#2 My reply. Matched to suit, insults and all.
#3 Your angry and even less relevant reply.
#4 I get the last word. All further replies are removed.
If you make a statement relating to my person, you are clearly demonstrating to me that you are neither reasonable nor intelligent; thus, you will become like a piece of meat to me, and I will use your pointless points for my own amusement and for the amusements of others. Seriously, think about this: We don't know each other. How is it fair for you to make judgments about me, when you know so little? Don't be that guy. Do you think I'm smug, arrogant, narcissistic, or pretentious? Well, unless you have a few videos with a million plus views, keep it to yourself. You would not believe the offensive drivel that leaks out of this place.
    ***The following was later added:
Secret spoiler comments are now removed, and there is now a keyword filter. The comment that makes me laugh is the "did anyone else notice..." type. Yes, everyone else noticed. In fact, the filter catches around 30 of these comments a day, and then there is the other 5 or 10 per day that I have to remove manually because so many commenters can't spell.
It is a bit sad that un-moderated comments get so bad. One of the most surprising things about it is how many of you talk without listening; it is not uncommon to see ten of the same comment in a row (because nobody reads what others say), nor is it unusual for me to read dozens of comments about a topic that is answered in the first line of the description. Sorry if it seems as though I am chastising you, because your having taken the time to read this is evidence that none of this actually applies to you.
    ***Original description:
Because of the cruel irony that is the way that youtube views are distributed, this video will likely go largely ignored, but the idea was this: remember that surprisingly popular pinball in a cube video? I figured that I should try to repeat some of its success by reproducing the formula a little bit (including, but not limited to, use of the word "impossible" in the title for views). I think, but I can't be sure, that this puzzle/trick is better by all measures than the pinball one. I'm not really sure, because I was never really fooled by this puzzle, because I designed it. I'm not trying to sound like I'm so clever, it's just that I don't really know how long this puzzle would have stumped me, because I've never been faced with solving this particular problem. Pay attention to the moment that you knew, for certain, how the trick worked. Often we just give up and wait for the solution to be presented to us, but it sure is satisfying when you work it out for yourself. For exactly that reason, I wanted the video to progress in such a way that it reveals itself ever so slowly (for those who don't spoil it by skipping to the end), which forces the viewer's brain to work at least a little towards figuring it out for themselves. Maybe I'm thinking too much into this, but maybe not. I mean, if a stadium full of people are going to watch this, I have at least some small responsibility to those people, in the sense that they should be engaged or be improved in some way after being distracted from their lives by watching it. Maybe if some of them learn the general idea of what an algorithm is, they didn't waste their time. Whatever. Maybe I'm not that good at it, but I just try to make videos in a way that would interest me if I were the one watching. Well, I'm sending this video public right now, and I am very curious to find out how well received this puzzle will be. Thanks for listening.

  • Pass me the salt Please

Actually liked this video because the way you chiseled the timber and sand it, i use to love wood work back in school, made a study desk ( very common project) but the results are satisfying knowing ive made something thats useful, anyways love your description made me laugh, especially because its so common, but the way you respond to all the negativity is satisfying and amusing, only because there are people who literally dislike unrelated things out of the blue, only because they are hiding behind a computer screen or whatever knowing they cant be physically touched....

....for example, i commented on a video which suprisingly has 1.6k likes on it made me kind of happy because all the agreements i was getting, but some replies i get are somewhat retarded, and when i go to look at their profiles/ channels my confusion as to why i get so much negativity is cleared up, heres a link to a video of perfect example from a negative commenter. Enjoy!

I haven’t even watched the video yet, but I’m subscribing and deciding that I love this channel purely for the fact of how the description states you will handle rude commenters in a handy-dandy 4 step process.
I look forward to seeing what videos you have to offer! Thanks for the laugh!

You should have put a ball bearing under the post held in place with a magnet. a space big enough to knock the ball out of the posts way. so you would need to know the proper angle to smack the piece and move the ball bearing.
That would make this a truly difficult puzzle.
no offense. without adding a puzzle to the post it's obvious that you need to move it...

Cool stuff. I saw the solution as soon as you said there was a trick to getting the ring off, though [SPOILER ALERT] I was expecting the use of a spring rather than a magnet. However, I wouldn't have thought of all the clever bits of workmanship, like using car wax to prevent epoxy squeeze-out from bonding to the wood, or using hacksaw cuts in the posts for more epoxy-gripping surface area. About the only technique I would have replicated is doing one end at a time. 😁

The ring ball and rope puzzle that brought me here is a puzzle, this is a trick. Puzzles can be solved by logic, tricks can only be solved with missing information. In this case the information is concealed. ( I wont say what it is here ) Without knowing the workings of the concealed mechanism it cannot be logically figured out and thus isnt a puzzle, its a scam. Revealing how it works just makes you look like a scumbag instead of a skilled engineer, or a skilled magician...

Wow, this sort of explaining myself gets old. Here was my point: unless you have lots of views, you don't really understand what it's like to receive daily complaints and insults. It wasn't a joke.
Have you ever received several hundred childish emails in a single day? Imagine a barely literate mob that constantly tells you how flawed you are. If I speak back, I'm instantly considered aggressive, arrogant, blah, blah, blah.
You are about to tell me about ignoring comments- don't. In fact, don't reply to this. I've already had this conversation hundreds of times.

I'd never step down to the level of an average TVclip commentor by using the "my channel is more revelant than yours, eff off mate" (even as a joke, which I guessed it was from the beggining), the second they believe they're as smart as you, you have another name for the block list; but it seems that you are the type that can find amusement in TVclip commentors being salty, which is only fair. (Edit: A word)

    • pocket83
      pocket83  6 months ago +1

Well, when you quote it like that, it's pretty far out of context. The very next sentence explains why I'm being defensive. My point was just that millions of views=lots of vile comments.
I wasn't bragging about getting views; I know my channel is a joke, and there are also plenty of huge channels out there making garbage content. Size matters not ;)

Excuse me for having had short fingernails a few years ago when this was filmed, but I have since toned the bad habit down. Discipline can control the impulse. But I have to say, Mr. Perfect, at least I am not socially deficient enough to insult people I don't know without provocation.
Further, I'm a pretty good looking guy. I'm also fit, because I'm active, and I exercise regularly. It's worth mention that I'm financially comfortable, and I'm in a committed relationship with a person who is likewise successful and attractive. I am drug and disease free, and I have been well-educated. I refrain from immoderate alcohol use, gambling, or any other vices. I am highly skilled and creative, and I luckily have an IQ that is over two standard deviations above the average. Yet somehow, you still feel superior to me!

As soon as you mentioned the middle bar was different, I was able to connect the dots. I'm not sure why so many people are calling this puzzle and video stupid. Many of the most popular "impossible" puzzles have relatively simple solutions; the key is not to overthink it. It's an algorithm that can be learned, just like solving math equations.
