She wasn’t first , Tonya did it first

Tonya was the 1st American Woman to land a tripel axel in competition but she never landed a triple axel at the olympics. she tried twice at Albertville in 1992 and fell on both of them. Mirai is the 1st American Woman to land the triple axel at the olympics, the 3rd lady overall to land the triple axel at the olympics. Midori Ito was the 1st in 1992 and Mao Asada was the 2nd in 2010, both from Japan.

    What about Midori Ito?

    • lsr asr
      lsr asr 5 months ago

Midori was the 1st lady to land the triple axel in competition in 1988. She was the 1st woman to land the triple axel in the olympics in 1992 at Albertville.

She is the first lady to do so in competition way back in the 1980s I think. Midori Ito was from Japan

Only nine women in the world have ever landed the Triple Axel in competition, however, Tonya Harding and Kimmy Meissner do not count since theirs were landed in national or regional exhibitions. Of the other seven women who landed the Triple Axle in international competition, five of them are of pure 100% Japanese descent and two of them are Russian. Of the five Japanese women who landed the Triple Axle in International competition, three of them landed it in the Olympics: Midori Ito in 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, Mao Asada in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Mirai Nagasu in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Again, Tonya and Kimmy do not count, since theirs were not done in international competition. Also, Tonya is an ex-felon, who has been banned for life from U.S. Figure Skating, so her one-off, accidental fluke do not count.

gotwa229 - not exactly correct re Tonya. you are correct that Tonya 1st landed the triple axel at the US nationals in 1991. However, later that year she landed the triple axel at the worlds so she is included in the list of women who have landed the 3A in international competition. She also did it at 1991 skate america which I believe was an international competition. You are correct that Kimmy does not count since it was at nationals only. Midori was the 1st woman to land a 3A in 1988 at the NHK in Japan and the 1st in world competition in 1989. There is a video on youtube entitled "ladies triple axel" showing the 7 (now 8 including Mirai) women who have landed the 3A in international competition and a rating of best to worst by the author.

Wait didnt Tonya Harding land the triple axel first

      lsr asr 5 months ago

Doris L you are correct the Tonya never landed the 3A at the Olympics but it was Lillehammer in 1994 and Albertville in 1992. She did land the 3A at the 1991 worlds in Munich.

    • Doris L
      Doris L 6 months ago

Tonya Harding was first American women to land 3A in competition, however she did not land it during the olympics in lillehammer and munich

MeMeR_citY - Tonya was the 2nd woman to land a triple axel in competition in 1991. Midori Ito was the 1st lady to land the 3A in 1988.

I had a lot of respect for her until she started talking s*** about her other teammates. Saying she was the reason they won the team bronze.
Wow what a primadonna as who the hell does she think she is. That finishing 10th was just a jumping off point for Dancing With the Stars as in seriously lol.
With that kind of attitude I hope she leaves figure skating for good. Team USA does not need someone like this representing their sport.
Not taking away from her talent but making excuses for your own poor performance. Then taking cheap shots at your teammates is weak!! :/

Skating points have also changed. You can now attempt any of the triples (such as lutz) and you will get the same amount of points as a triple axel.

    • lsr asr
      lsr asr 7 months ago

Mirror - it was a team bronze. she did her triple axel in the team competition. Mirai did not win a medal when she competed individually in the 2018 Olympics. Nor did she land a triple axel in her individual competition skates.

Its common in Malaysia tho. We have a lot of ethnicities. Eventho its either Malay, Chinese, Indian and etc we still proud to call them Malaysian! Our sports especially does not dominate by only Malays so its pretty common for us. Since America is kind of against immigrants these days it actually makes me felt weird to see this tbh.
