...the straw gives u a good idea of how close on pitch you are to the resonance pitch. The glass shatters because u create the same pitch that the glass itself vibrates at when u hit it, and so when its vibrating like that the glass itself is shaking(you cant see it, which is why putting something light like a straw in helps to see that youre at the right pitch). Microwaves work on a similar concept in regards to water. If youve seen the tacoma narrows bridge collapse video, same too(wind)

@Elekid1 Every object has a resonating frequency, let's just say the glass resonated at 50 h (which is definitely doesn't) and he got his voice to that exact frequency - the glass would smash because the vibrations were the same as the cup and the side vibrated with so much pressure they broke. The glasses probably have a much lower frequency and their shape makes them a lot harder to break.

  • Matej Vadura
    Matej Vadura 9 years ago

@Elekid1 the sound waves from his voice echoed in the glass making pressure on the sides of the glass cup (or whatever its called sorry my english is not so good :) ) making it break so he probably wouldn t break the glasses if he wanted to because of teir shape and also they are probably made from thougher glass mixed with plastic

Too bad we weren't recording when my barbershop choir was doing random mixed quartet practice. The group I was in nailed the "walls" chord of our Singing in the Rain Medley. The overtone broke four light fixtures in the ceiling above us. That was a hazard to be sure. Anyone can break a glass with a solid single tone, but try using a chord and overtone to do it. We just got lucky. Please upload a vid if you succeed.

@hoyun no all you have to do is match the same frequncy as the glass (thats why he its it with his finger to match it) and then you sustain it long enough that the resonance causes the glass to vibrate enough and break.
